  1. Ghost: You make a good point. I could be mixing the terms hardbop and bebop. I'll have to investigate. Thanks for the heads-up. On this same line of thought, then, what makes Night at Birdland hardbop while Monks' Genius sessions are bebop? What about Bird & Dizzy who also predated the Night at Birdland sessions? Where do they fit in? Hardbop, bebop, other?
  2. Ok. So, I’ll succumb to admitting to a little bit of ignorance to ask this question. Facts, opinions and observations are welcome. Styles of music come and go through time. No musical style I can think of starts on it’s own, in a vacuum. It evolves slowly till a new music style begins or an old music style ends. I’ve read that Blakey’s Night at Birdland sessions (recorded in 1954) are recognized as being the start of bebop. But, what made Blakey’s 1954 sessions different from certain other sessions that preceded it? For example, Monk’s sessions from the late 1940s and early 1950s (Genius of Modern Music) seem very bebop-ish to me. Also, Horace Silver’s Trio (and non trio) sessions and Bud Powell’s early Blue Note sessions come to mind. Again, why does the Night at Birdland session get the ‘start of bebop’ label offered to it while earlier, comparable sessions do not? What makes Night at Birdland different and/or unique?
  3. It seems so dumb and so greedy, to me, that the recording industry's plan to sell more product is by punishing it's customers. With the exception of the recent announcement about lowering CD prices (I forgot which company announced, and its taken several months to arrive), the only other way the industry is attempting to sell more is by punishing those that want/enjoy the product by way of lawsuites, etcetera. It seems that a better-priced or better-quality product would attract more buyers?

    Uptown. . .

I have this copy of Uptown: The up-coming release is a re-release/remaster of the same?
  5. I’m constantly surprised how ‘digital piracy’ is always the single reason for the decline in CD sales. Other possible reasons might include music that is not enjoyable and/or high CD prices. Also, there are so many other things to spend one’s money on these days… computer software, DVDs, computer hardware, big screen TVs, cable, broadband, cell phones, etc. I remember, in the 1970s, I could find nothing else to purchase besides record albums (maybe books). There is so much more competition for the entertainment dollar in the modern day. Recorded music is just not the only form of entertainment anymore. Yeah, stop those CDs from being copyable and music sales will increase?
  6. I remember looking at the Alexa numbers when the Organissimo Forum was in it's infancy. If I remember correctly, at that time, Alexa recognized the Organissimo domain but reported the activity was so low it had nothing to report on the site.
  7. My car is on my avatar. Hehe...
  8. I'd never seen the cover of the Horace Silver Trio album till I purchased it from Borders last weekend. The Trio album has the orange cover and, if I remember correctly, Horace & the Jazz Messengers has the blue cover. How many times was this same cover used by Blue Note?
  9. I count 79 for me. Sheesh.
  10. I purchased Boogaloo when it was still a new release, back about March or April (I'm forgetting the date). I've never been the slightest disappointed. If Blue Note believes Soulive is good enough for it's roster I'm not sure why Organissimo isn't already on the Blue Note roster as well. If Organissimo was signed to Blue Note would we have to go back to trying to us the BNBB?
  11. I enjoy going to Bisbee, Arizona. It's a few miles from Tombstone... about 1.5 hours from Tucson. Bisbee is an old mining town which is still intact. The old hotel, The Copper Queen, is still there and still open for business. The old-style architecture is nice to see. You can purchase good food, good coffee, and other tourist treasures. One of the restaurants, I forgot which, plays 1920s & 1930s jazz on their speaker system. You can take a tour through the old mine. It's interesting to start the mine tour on the surface in the 100° weather, then travel into the mine where the temperature is around 50°. http://bisbeearizona.com/
  12. THIS board is so damned much better than the BNBB ever was... I don't miss the BNBB in the slightest. You know?
  13. Soul: You going to see the Gap Band at the Del Sol?
  14. I subscribed to HBO, about three years ago, to watch The Sopranos. I enjoyed The Sopranos very much but then got involved with the first season of Six Feet Under. I finally had to admit, as good as The Sopranos has been, Six Feet Under became my all time favorite HBO show. I now feel comfortable saying Six Feet is the best show on the TV. I’d watched every episode till the third season. I watched the first half of the third season and thought it was excellent. Then I got involved in other things and missed the second half of the third Six Feet Under season. Yes, I’m sorry I missed those shows! I’ll have to catch them on reruns or on a future DVD release. I purchased the first season on DVD then let my parents borrow it. They watched the entire first season in a week’s time. My Mom, now, wants the second season. I advised it’s not available for purchase.
  15. Because the board moderator and users/posters are good. I remember, in the early days of this board, I was wanting, very much, for the young board to do well and grow. I've enjoyed it so far.
  16. The people at Cheap-CDs don't seem too good at explaining too much. However, they do ship CDs quick and cheap (and I appreciate them very much for it!).
  17. I'll agree. Considering all the available Mosaic sets, and Mosaic sets I own... My number one choice is still the Hank Mobley set. I'm surprised it hasn't already sold out. There will be a lot of people wanting the Mobley box after it is gone.
  18. I haven't been to their site in a while. I didn't know they were off. How long were they gone? Any explanation as to why they were gone?
  19. 1942. The year closest to the beginning of bebop. B)
  20. I chose 18, but don't know why.
  21. Wow, what a poll! I narrowed my choice to Sonny Clark and Horace Silver. Hmmm... Silver is my choice. Horace sounds like Blue Note to me. Although Sonny Clark is a very close second. Clark may have been my first choice on a different day.
  22. My user name is a conglomeration of the first three letters of my first name and the first three letters of my last name. Damn, I wish I had a more colorful explanation.
  23. I mean, like, who's not going to choose blue?
  24. I was listening to Jacknife just last night. I would give it a review. B)
  25. I purchased the Gerald Wilson Mosaic in the post BNBB period. I purchased the box due to suggestions on THIS board. For me, Mosaic is still selling merchandise due to suggestions of a bulletin board although not the BN bulletin board.
