Besides Harry and Buddy, only Corky Corcoran (ts), from that band sounds well-known to me... No matter, it is great band, although slightly out of tune section playing from time to time, and all these efforts in early jazz-rock/funk/whatsoever manner are of great importance (to my ears)!

People, if you want really rare one, look at this, please: It features some unknown live recording from 1936. Virtuoso, Bird-alike clarinet playing!

Did you mean the TT that read vinyl with an array of lasers? I heard a demo some years ago, forgot the brand: awful sound and totally unable to track even the slightest imperfection/flaw of records. A 'pop' was a "BOOM", a 'click' was like a gunshot at the Carnegie Hall during a performance of classic music. Maybe now they are better. And it can't read anything exept black vinyl or shellac, lateraly cut. No reproduction of colored vinyl, picture vinyl or vertically cut records.

Lester Young/Count Basie Mosaic Announced!
mmilovan replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Couldn't agree more ... I STILL remember when I first heard it, well over 40 years ago now... like hearing the Voice of the Cosmos ... (may have had a little something at the time) ... Q The same with me - first heard it on Columbia Masterpieces Series vinyl record... Why not trying to add Library of Congress live, unissued material? -
Sandi, these are so nice and divine stories, stories that brought Pres back here with all of us! Tell me, did you ever hear him doing his famous coined language, and phrases only known to closest friends, or was he just "straight talk" while conversating with you?

in july 2007 i contacted larry appelbaum from the loc in washington and asked him about plans to release the lester young sides. here is his answer: " Hello Marcel, I'm not aware of any plans to issue the Lester Young jam session materials. Any record label can do so as long as they get permission of the rights holders. So far I've not been contacted by any label and no one has come down to listen to the discs. Larry" and in a second mail he gave this information: "There's only about 15-20 mins of Lester, along with other items from the jam session (like Sammy Price trio performances). i would think this might be bonus material for a Lester Young reissue. Larry" that is both sad and surprise news for me. because i thought that there is a market for a legend like lester young and that this recordings go very quickly on cd (like the monk/coltrane one). but that´s not the fact. so we have to make propaganda and find a label who is willing to release this historical recordings. keep boppin´ marcel And speaking in terms of sound restoration and preservation, with all today sophisticated software and very good needles, and also professional turntables available for old records - they surely can work marvel of such material, properly recorded and not played till death... Marcel, you are so right in putting your statement: "that is both sad and surprise news for me. because i thought that there is a market for a legend like lester young and that this recordings go very quickly on cd (like the monk/coltrane one). but that´s not the fact." After all those complete box sets of every important person in jazz of the past, we are still not blessed to get picture of Lester in totall - and God knows how many left unissued (especially, postwar broadcasts and Basie broadcasts as well).

Hello Sandi, I'm glad that you are here, and that you are posting your priceless rememberings as well. I will never forget your stories from AAJ forum about Lester, as well as about his attiuteds. More closely I will remember how desparate were Stitt and Waldron in searching for him, when he simply dissapears... And I know that Agustín is somewhere here, as far as I know he is well and happy...

Unofortunatelly, we are still waiting for that unissued live LOC material from beginning 1940s, on few acetates... last time I heard about them, it was transcription turntable that was unfunctional, or something like that...

Rather small but interesting inteview with Teddy Wilson, here: http://www.jazzprofessional.com/interviews...dy%20Wilson.htm

I really don't know if it is Reuss, but I'm almost certain that such strong swing feeling that makes you feel well and good originated from the way reed and brass sections pronounce notes... you have Miller band, Dorsey, Shaw etc. and they all sound different even they played same arrangements. But to my ears that Goodman's band in mentioned period was above them all (even better in live appearances than studio dates).

Some youtube clips from the band called "Kirby Memory": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19GC99z2MkI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJ_OMAb2o80 I was amazed - they sound so close to the original!

I found my favourite track with Fletcher Henderson on "Ken Burns Jazz" sempler: "Hotter Then Hell" (1934) - later it became "Yeah Man". It is clean swing music just right before its official start.
-
And as addition to this, I can't imagine Nat would held him in his band if he wasn't pro. There is a proof for that in few drum breaks and solo spots while with Cole.
-
Few times it was ad hoc band, here I can recognize Barney Bigard, probably Henry Red Allen (???), Vic DIckenson (???), but bass player is mistery for me:
-
Thanks, he was very fine drummer, and he even played drums with Nelson Riddle studio orchestra (last pic)...

Hello, while watching some NKCole late 1950s TV shows, I've noticed "LY" initials at bass drum, and knowing Lee Young was with Nat - captured some frames from the show instantly. So is it Lee Young, here, on these photos (click to enlarge): Thanks!

RCA Jazz Classics German re-issues series list?
mmilovan replied to bakeostrin's topic in Discography
Can we add Artie Shaw - In The Blue Room/In The Café Rouge (RCA 74321 18527 2) to this list - his marvelously live recorded (during 1938-39.) big band - it was marvelous hearing experience. Original album was from 1954. -
RIP, Oscar Peterson. Always played right and swinging notes...

Hello, form another board today I've received this: Seems like 44.1/16 correctly done is transparent compared to 24/192, SACD, DVD-A etc. So no difference was heard among the various sample rates and bits. Please read on: ---------------------------- http://www.aes.org/journal/toc/AES-Sep2007TOC.cfm Audibility of a CD-Standard A/D/A Loop Inserted into High-Resolution Audio Playback E. Brad Meyer and David R. Moran 775 Conventional wisdom asserts that the wider bandwidth and dynamic range of SACD and DVD-A make them of audibly higher quality than the CD format. A carefully controlled double-blind test with many experienced listeners showed no ability to hear any differences between formats. High-resolution audio discs were still judged to be of superior quality because sound engineers have more freedom to make them that way. There is no evidence that perceived quality has anything to do with additional resolution or bandwidth. ----------------------------- Additional info here: http://www.bostonaudiosociety.org/explanation.htm

I read that maintenance of these are no longer supported. Finding one in good condition may be out of my price range. Numark and the like, are cheap (and thus not so well suitable) substitution to Technics direct drive. You can try: "KAB BROADCAST STANDARD 78 RPM UPGRADE FOR TECHNICS SL-1200 Any Technics SL-1200MK2, 3, or 5 can be turned into a KAB Broadcast Standard. Technics introduced the MKII version of this worldwide acclaimed turntable in 1979. Still selling at a rate of about 25,000 per year worldwide, and it remains the most widely used turntable today. In December of 1994, KAB began shipping the Broadcast Standard version of the SL1200. The success of this model continues unrivalled. Not surprisingly since there isn't a turntable out there that can match the performance features and value of a Technics SL-1200 with all 3 speeds. UPGRADE DESCRIPTION The upgrade is somewhat complicated since it affects three separate internal functions and therefore cannot be offered as a kit. The upgrade incorporates two new circuit boards and a total of 27 interconnections. Very high quality relays and precision components are used. This is critical since the KAB Broadcast Standard has found a home in Record Companies, Re-Mastering facilities, Radio Stations and Sound libraries around the world. Reliability and dependability are assured. Once complete, the Turntable will have no outward signs that it has been modified. The new speed is coded into the existing speed buttons. The 45 button becomes a "shift key" and the 33 button becomes the 78 RPM button. Simply hold the 45 down and momentarily touch and release the 33. The 'table is now spinning at 78 RPM. Hit 33 or power down to restore the standard 2 speed operation. You can change speeds while the table is spinning. All FEATURES ARE RETAINED That means that the variable speed is quartz locked and provides a range of 72 - 85 RPM. The Strobe will indicate correctly also, locking in at 78.26 RPM and showing the + 3.3 and + 6.6 and - 3.3 as usual. PACKING AND RETURNING YOUR SL1200 You will have to return the unit to KAB for the upgrade. Typical turn-around time is 3-5 days less shipping."

No, only to those made from around 1952. - onward...

Also, you can try to find vintage Technics SP15 or SP10MKII - the best choice for heavy shellac records...

Right, and Paul Weston got huge amount of criticism for that "mood music" he developed further in (as leader and arranger of band he led)... I'm not quite certain if this was bad or good music as far as we talk about Weston. It surely will fit somewhere in some crossover category between jazz and popular music.

Jonathan and Darlene Edwards started as a joke, and later it became (unfortionatelly) the only album that Jo Stafford got Grammy for... the point was to emulate bad singing because Stafford was well known for her absolute pitch ability...
-
Happy birthday to Jo Stafford, one of my faovourite singer anytime. Billie Holiday used to say that her voice is like an instrument, and Lester Young admire her the most! Her contribution to jazz singing (as I can hear it) will be something that further generations will have to notice. She used to sing standard and novelity songs and change theirs melody as Billie always did. Stafford's perfect pitch helped her to always deliver top notch notes, and her's pefect sense for swing is unbelievable. Wish you good and strong health, and many years to share with us, Jo! http://tinyurl.com/36gkwc
