  1. No, I'm thinking Larry Young. I hear you on the Sun Ra, but the phrasing is similar to Young's.
  2. Been listening to the set all weekend. What kills me is his playing on organ. It's a killer!!!! I wonder if he was comparing notes with Larry Young, because it sounds similar to what he was doing at the time.
  3. Gentlemen, start your search engines........... and fire up them credit cards!!!!!!!!!
  4. Also, in the case of Impulse, it passed through many hands as a cd reissue label. First by MCA, then GRP, which was responsible for the bulk of reissues, and then Verve, then Universal. Samll fish getting eaten by bigger fish....... The point is they have been remastered over and over again..... probably the deluxe editions from as close to the source as they can get.
  5. Components -- ain't nothin else like it. And Joe Chambers is da MAN!
  6. I recently bought the Swing Sessions because of the personnel and the sessions. Coleman Hawkins. Ben Webster and Harry Sweets Edison. Illinois Jacquet. Buck Clayton. You just can't go wrong!!!!!
  7. I like solo piano! From Chopin to Shostakovitch to Janacek, to Herbie and Monk. Heck, even certain piano rolls.......
  8. There's improvising and there's drifting. That's what I was alluding to. The Osby stuff is killer.
  9. You know, having recently seen Hill play solo piano in Baltimore, I wanted to add about my comment regarding his "wandering." I saw both sets -- the first was directly from his sheet music, the second improvised. I liked the first set a lot more, because it was more structured. Now I am all for improvised, but in Hill's case, at least that night, he can go off on a tangent and as a listener, I totally forget where he's going or what he's doing or saying musically. It's like he's so busy exploring, searching for new forms, patterns, chords, etc., that the statement of the tune is no longer important. It can be good, but I'm not sure if Hill is at his best that way. It's the same when listening to some of the sessions here. WHen the pieces are rehearsed, thought out, revised, etc., and then performed, they are rock solid. When they're on the fly, not so. And maybe some of the tunes aren't fully realized compositions -- I don't know. Perhaps its just a reflection of the musicians being familiar with the music. But hell, overall, I enjoy the process and his unique approach -- I wish he could have played more with Sam Rivers -- I think they work great together! Heck, it's not too late...... I love this set, regardless. Best of the year, even this early into it.
  10. Probably caught a bad shipment. I have several Lonehills and they came in great shape in the mail.
  11. I got the set when I came home, popped them in my Mac, and put them in my ipod, and listened to it as I was driving south to Williamsburg to visit my folks. I only listened to the first disc, cause I forgot to bunch them in one folder -- long story. Some of the music on the first disc appeared in the two fer 70's reissue (One for One?). Let me tell you, Malcolm Addey does a knock out job with remastering! But the music is great --- not every track is a "hit" -- I thought there were a couple of tunes wandered aimlesslessly, but for the killer material are the sessions with string quartet -- WOW!! Having peeked at the liner notes, written by Cuscuna, it is very interesting reading, as he give a brief synopsis of his own career in the record industry, how his relationship with Hill came about, and his early diggings into the vaults. Very nice! There is also a "complete" (always have to be cautious with this) discography of Andrew Hill's Blue Note sessions. So far, a big thumbs up!
  12. What I don't understand is given the stalemate at Blue Note, how come they have been reissued in England?
  13. I am dying to get the Starker 2 disc set that they reissued, but for $36............ I will wait. And RCA is cranking more SACD Living Stereos -- I just saw a new batch -- Berlioz's Requiem (or was it Bach's?) and others.
  14. A number of companies make tower speakers -- they haven't disappeared at all. Smaller speakers, or bookshelf speakers, sound really good as well, depending on the manufacturer. I have a pair of Mirage speakers that I have hooked up to my tube amp and they sound great. You have to consider the space that they are going into -- big tower speakers may not be the right solution if they are going into a small or even medium sized room. What places like Best Buy or Circuit City are selling now are surround sound systems for home movie stuff. They're not into the quality audio hi fi set up.
  15. heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh.................
  16. I recently bought the Byron Janis plays Rachmaninoff SACD on Mercury. Reading the notes, it states that while they did remaster for two channel and three channel SACD playback, the regular cd playback has the same audio that appeared on the original cd release. Basically, if you only have a standard cd player, you are playing a lot more money for the same sound. It's kind of a rip off, only if you don't have a SACD machine. Otherwise you are better off going to broinc.com and picking up the Mercurys there for a lot less....
  17. I like the Starker as well. But the Casals is the best -- look for the 2 cd Naxos remastering job, which surpasses all, even the prior EMI remasterings.
  18. Ca'Purange and Tangerine. Oh yeah!
  19. I haven't been to it, though i will before the summer comes along. I have had co owrkers who have seen it before it opened, and they said it will take a couple of days to digest everything. It's that extensive a renovation. And the layout of the permanent collection is all new -- so you might be wandering around a bit, trying to orient yourself. But you should have a good time.
  20. It isn't Jimmy Smith's greatest achievment, but I have always liked the Peter and the Wolf album. I just keep going back to it when I want to listen to his music and I find it enjoyable. Nothing more, nothing less. But for grease it is either Prayer Meeting or Back at the Chicken Shack.
  21. The Scorpio lps are a mixed bag. The Vanguard reissues sound great -- some latin jazz stuff sound shallow, but in a few cases it sounds like the mastering was from another lp.
  22. It is definitely the weak dollar. Most of my ebay sellings go straight to Europe or Japan.
  23. I listed items on Sunday and no problems. I do have to upload some images tonight though. Are the pics you are loading jpegs, or ?
  24. Their Taiyo Yudens are just as good (made by klone as well) -- offered on the same site.
