Happy birthday Mark Sheldon
Stefan Wood replied to B. Goren.'s topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Happy birthday! All the best! -
...... in addition to the Captain and Tenille collection you keep boasting about, that alone can rot foam, wiring, and the faux wood panelling of the speakers!

The problem for me is that I have not met anyone who is interested in dating an "artist." Sure, it sounds cool when you are telling your friends that you are dating an artist, but to have a relationship? Not in my world, try as I might. Problem too is living in DC there are too many people who don't look favorably on my profession, for whatever reason. I've met and went out with some nice ladies, but I have never had a long term relationship. I like where I live and my job, but socially it is rough. I am in a deadly circle that is hard to get out of.

Grachan Moncur April 8 & 9 at the Iridium
Stefan Wood replied to robviti's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Heard from bertrand yesterday. I tried to post a note here but the board was down, at least temporarily. Moncur was supposed to be smoking, I mean freakin fantastic! If he comes to your town, check him out -- he has a working group that is all great. Hopefully we'll get more details about the NYC concert. -
What Mosaics Can We Safely Unload?
Stefan Wood replied to DMP's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yes indeed. But why sell at all? I've held on to my Mosaic vinyl, as I recall that at least one early review of the Blue Note CD set complained of bad sound and drop-outs. Can anyone confirm this? Not true. It sounds fine. -
Honestly, I haven't had any problems with McMaster's remastered cds. I pick up the McLean and the Evans.

Gotta disagree with you there; his incessant and self-congratulatory rambling has made listening to this broadcast a freakin' chore! Schapp's voice is the sound of a man who thinks he knows everything there is to know about jazz, and he'll be the first one to tell you. Hell, I got so frustrated today I fired off an e-mail to WKCR to ask them to PLEASE make Schapp shut up and play some music! It's like we get a half-hour of music, and then a half-hour of talkin' a lot and sayin' nothing (as JB once said). I was being kind. He ticks me off as well at times; however, for all the babbling there is info to be gained; and given the state of jazz radio today that is a compromise I can deal with. That station is at its best with these tributes; its an education.

If it's Phil Schaap, he does talk a lot. Wealth of info, though.

What Jackie McLean are you spinning.......
Stefan Wood replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Dynasty. Friggin masterpiece! -
I wish his Mainstream lps would be reissued in total. Mosaic Select anyone?
-
I picked this up - the Complete Planet of the Apes set. It's for freaking completists, but I love it. The movies, not the packaging. I have to hide the Cornelius in the closet, cause it's freaking me out!

Great!!! I have the Blackburn/Hill Fresh Sound, and will sell it once the Connoisseurs come out. This is some good music the people should check out.
-
It exists. I saw the footage at the Library of Congress, along with Bertrand.

Miles - On the Corner and Beyond
Stefan Wood replied to Aggie87's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Damn, has it been 12 years???? -
I might pick this up. He's one artist whose studio and live performances are very different.
-
Got a huge stack of modern classical for a $1 a pop, like Elliott Carter, Richard Yardumian, Xanaksis, etc., and a nice stash of Louisville Records as well.

Any plans to come back to NYC soon?
Stefan Wood replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Look, if you guys don't come to DC, I'm gonna have to dump you guys and go with the Bad Plus forum...... -
Look, I love Wayne Shorter, and I do agree that his compositions on those lps are overlooked -- I listened to Phantom Navigator recently, and the tunes are great, but the 80's synthesizer and electric bass kills it for me for repeated listening. I can't filter it out. I don't usually have a bias towards particular instruments used in certain periods of music, but this is an exception. Perhaps it also has to do with recording for CBS, as I have heard live recordings which make for more interesting listening.

This is probably a match made in hell. Wong Kar Wai's films take a looooooong time to produce, and he changes directions in the middle of filming, which would drive the Hollywood suits nuts. And why Lady from Shanghai????

I had the original pressing, which I used in the test. This is a smoking session all the way!
