anyone have strong feelings on any of these discs?
lous hayes-variety is the spice of life
fumio karashima-hot islands
barney wilen-autojazz
rufus harley-re creation of the gods
most are japanese import prices so figured i would ask before wasting 20 something bucks a disc.
thank you.
I like that Louis Hayes album a lot, too. It's probably a little more "commersh" than you're used to hearing from him, but it works. But with Leon Thomas, Frank Strozier, Harold Mabern and Cecil McBee, you know there's some value.
FWIW, this version of "My Favorite Things" burns down the HOUSE! Mabern's on fire.
It's a nice enough album, but to me it has always been less than the sum of its parts, and I wouldn't pay import $ for it.

I have the single cd original release from some years back. Will the 2 cd complete set really give me anymore of the concert or just alot of introductions? Not sure if it is worth buying the newer 2 cd set.
Thanks for your opinions
Robert, it will give you all of the actual concert rather than (actually, along with) some of the cuts which were rerecorded the next few days, greatly updated sound, and fascinating notes (which explain, among other things, about the rerecordings). This is seminal music - go for the upgrade.

'Swingin Easy' by Vaughan is the greatest jazz vocal album ever IMO. Vocal with piano trio recordings from 1954 and 1957. Her voice was still in full force at that point, and the recordings are magic. Worth the price of admission alone for her introduction of Roy Haynes on "Shulie a Bop", which was then parodied by Rahsaan on Haynes' excellent 'Out of the Afternoon' album in 1962. 'Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown' also should not be missed, especially for "Lullabye of Birdland". After that, I'd go with 'One Night Stand: The Town Hall Concert 1947', for the purest singing in the history of the planet, then go with the jazz-oriented Mercury material and the Proper Box to capture the early Musicraft and Columbia sides.

New Additions July 2006:
The following three titles make up the complete Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers October 11,1980 Live at Bubba’s Recordings. Sound Quality is fine, and the group and music are out of this world. This was one of the greatest Jazz Messenger units, with Wynton Marsalis, Bobby Watson, Billy Pierce, James Williams, Charles Fambrough, and Blakey. If you don’t have this music in some form (it has been frequently issued either correctly under Blakey’s name or exploitationally under Marsalis’s), you owe it to yourself to get it. If you are young and never understood what the excitement concerning Wynton was all about (since he’s usually been deathly boring for almost 20 years), this will answer it for you. Contact me if you need to know which cuts are on which CD’s, since you may own some of this but not all. There is only one cut overlap total between these three CD’s, so you’re safe to get all three if you don’t own any of this
Art Blakey – The Sound of Jazz
Wynton Marsalis – Wynton
Wynton Marsalis – The All-American Hero

thought i would give a heads up that i ordered 4 discs from black jazz on june 16 and they still aren't here. i would consider that unacceptably slow for a business.
i emailed them twice with no response...
kind of annoying.
I'll chime in with a few thoughts. One, I ordered some Doug & Jean Carn CD's from them a few years ago, I received them fine, and the CD's were fine as far as remastering, original artwork, etc. I'm sure the label is only a mom and pop (maybe only just pop) labor of love (consider how tiny their volume of sales would be), so ordering them in the summer, you may run into vacation schedules. I owned basically the entire Black Jazz and Tribe catalogs on vinyl back in the 70's - picked the Black Jazz up for 99 cents each at Third Street Jazz and got the Tribes for something like that at Houston Hall Records, both defunct Philly stores from the day. The Tribe stuff always pretty much sounded like amateur hour to me (The Marcus Belgrave was the only one I really liked), but there were some fine LP's on Black Jazz. Calvin Keys - Shaw-neeq, both Rudolph Johnson titles, both Henry Franklin titles, were especially favorites off the top of my head. But the crown jewels were the Doug and Jean Carn albums ('Adams Apple' doesn't have Jean, they had split and she had gone to Philly International to gain fame and fortune). The albums with Jean Carn are, to me, priceless. The version of "Infant Eyes" is heart-wrenching. If you like jazz vocals at all, don't miss them. Beautiful, spiritual stuff which will lift you to a different plane.

I have a new, sealed retail (not a promo) edition of Jackie McLean - It's Time available. This is one of the new BN Conn's that just came out. Through an error, I ended up with 2 of it. $12 shipped to US address or best offer in $ or trade. PM me or email at john.felser@verizon.net. thx.

I'll differ: I prefer the earlier album. Partly because of the music, partly because the recording is much better.
I also much prefer 'Music Inc & Big Band', more fire and immediacy, but they're both well worth having, as is everything by Tolliver. Still longing for a CD of 'Paper Man'!
-
"Lydian M-1"! Still sounds great and different-logical today, and it sounded even more so at the time. I think I liked George Russell best around the time of this and the Jazz Workshop album (and, a bit later on, "Jazz in the Space Age"), when he was trying to tighten the nuts and bolts of his system to the maximum rather than loosening things up.
Larry, totally agree with you about George Russell.

"One Foot" and "Two Feet" are both available from Japan on Epic Records. I have both in my hot little hands as we speak. It's the third one, "Getting Into Something" that's only available from Lonehill.
I don't know how tough it is to find or if Da Bastards re-stock, but my copy of Getting into Something came from an inexpensive vinyl reissue probably three or four years ago.
As far as Lonehill goes, I do give them credit for being complete bootleggers, as the Bailey set includes "Brownie Speaks" which was only issued on Almost Forgotten, an almost forgotten 1983 comp of unissued Columbia tunes. Since then, most of the music has made it out on CD reissues, but Lonehill's the only place you can find that forgotten track.
All tree LPs plus an extra track on one CD? Wow!
MG
Only contains part of the third album on the 2CD set.
Two cd set!
I have steered clear.
-
Art Farmer - The Time and The Place with the bonus material from the 2LP set that came out in the 70's-early 80's. Charles Lloyd - Discovery. All of the Chico Hamilton stuff with Charles Lloyd and Gabor Szabo. Better reissues of Soft Machine 3-7, especially 3 and 4. And I agree that I'd rather see all of this on Legacy (though it won't happen).

You're right about the cover. I meant to mention it but forgot - especially cool considering that Charles actually looked like a balding accountant!

Teddy Charles is, to me, one of the most underrecognized musicians in modern jazz history. He did some amazingly forward work in the Fifties, and 'Tentet', recorded for Atlantic in 1956, may be the best of the lot. 'A Word From Bird', recorded in 1957 for Atlantic, is also excellent, as are his earlier 'New Directions' recordings for Prestige. His subsequent work seemed to lose the vision of these mid-50's albums, taking on more late'50's commercial considerations ('A Salute to Hamp', 'Plays Ellington', 'Russia Goes Jazz', etc.), though 'Jazz in the Garden', with Waldron, Booker Little, and Booker Ervin is fine, though not up to the standards of these dates. Charles was an accomplished vibist, but his primary contributions were as a writer and arranger (he also was a busy producer). Working in a "cool" mode with a very advanced harmonic vocabulary, the writing and arrangements on these works is stunning. In addition to Charles, other arrangers on this album include Mal Waldron, Gil Evans, George Russell, and Jimmy Giuffre, other very forward thinkers of the time. Another underrated musician making similar inroads at the time was Gil Melle. I'm hoping some of the musicians and other more learned members on the board can explain in better technical terms what was going on in these recordings in this era, I just know this type of work from this era sounds great, and sounds unlike anything else before or since. Musicians in the Tentet include Art Farmer, Gigi Gryce, J.R. Monterose, Mal Waldron and Jimmy Raney. Farmer, Raney, and Charles Mingus are among the musicians on 'A Word From Bird'.

Both discs are gone, thx!

It is a fairly boring date and wouldn't sell much over 700 copies in the US.
Most fascinating aspect of the whole thread to me is the sales #'s. Had no idea stuff would sell so poorly. What are "normal" sales figures for like a Blue Note Jackie McLean reissue on the high end, a Blue Note Horace Parlan reissue, say, on the low end? What does an OJC reissue of a good but not immortalized Sonny Rollins set (say, 'Sonny Boy') sell? What will something like the Lou Blackburn sell? What does a new release by someone like Billy Harper sell? What does a given Delmark release sell? Thx for the education!
-
New, sealed retail copies of the Art Blakey - Holiday for Skins and Complete Lou Blackburn Imperial Sessions new Blue Note Conn CD's. I accidentally ended up with two of each. $12 each includes US postage, or best reasonable offer of cash or trade. Email to john.felser@verizon.net or PM.

Suzanne Vega is a not uninteresting talent.
Still, Suzanne Vega is a not uninteresting talent.
I don't detect any enthusiasm behind those sentences. Perhaps none was intended.
No enthusiasm, but no disgust either.
She does what she does more interestingly than the bulk of her peers, and it's not without some musical interest in/on those terms.
Are there other people I'd rather hear, especially on BN? Sure. But does her signing to the label make me cringe the way that the signing of, say, Michelle Shocked would? No way.
Fascinating string! No huge insights to add, but just a couple of thoughts (or statistics). I own all of Suzanne Vega's regular CD and DVD releases, and find her fascinating. I own all of Michelle Shocked's regular CD releases, and find her riveting, so not sure why the shot at her (btw, I have huge respect for JSngry). She is a true original (as is Vega), and is "worthy" of a Blue Note slot (though it won't happen after her Mercury experience, and she would never sell enough to have it appeal to the label). I have had many Greg Osby and Jacky Terrason CD's run through my hands over the years, have dutifully listened to every one of them, and have kept none. Don't "get" either of them. And I'm a "jazz" guy through and through, have thousands of jazz CD's. I'd rather see Blue Note signing top-flight singers (Van Morrison, Anita Baker, Vega) than running less-compelling "jazz" talents at us. And, to dispel the myth a little, some of the roots of the break from the purity of the jazz on Blue Note run back to the Alfred Lion days. Remember how, after the success of "The Sidewinder", Blue Note musicians were often told to come up with one tune of that ilk on their albums? And how that tune often ended up being the title tune? You'd get these albums with five masterpieces and one "Son of Sidewinder" from these brilliant musicians.
-
I believe the Hodges is only six CD's. But great set.
-
The Verve site says 6/13 now on these. I've thus far resisted the entire digital download world, but may have to start to get the Shepp, which I had my heart set on. How much does it cost per album, and how do you do it? Sorry to ask such elementary questions so late in the game.
-
I've always thought that there were also ethics issues (admittedly very grey) with labels running artists' work out of print, denying the artist the exposure and possible income from an available release. What are the responsibilities of the artist, original issuer, US reissuer, overseas reissuer, US consumer, and overseas consumer really in all of this? And what responsibility is there to serve the music vs. upholding the "legal"copyright, regardless of how it was acquired? Does an artist really deserve to have his material never ever available because a company grabs the perpetual copyright, generations later a whole different management and philosophy of the company refuses to reissue the material, and reasonable leasing is not available? At what point does it become a form of slavery, like the old baseball reserve clause which John Montgomery Ward, Curt Flood fought so valiently? It's one thing to have a Definitive/Lone Hill reissue of something that Verve or Blue Note or someone readily has in print, another thing for them to have a reissue of something that hasn't seen the light of day in 45 years and is unlikely to ever be reissued otherwise.

I usually buy most of my cds off of ebay/half.com and they have a feature where you can leave feedback about the transaction. I thought I would leave some here.....
I bought two cds from akanalog last week. Fast Shipping - they arrived two business days later just as he described them. Packaging was excellent. I'm very happy w/ my purchase. Recommended seller.
Thanks.
I buy way more from Adam than from anyone else, and am always very pleased with him.
