  1. If form holds true, it'll be out in the UK in the fall and in the US the following spring.
  2. For some of us, "being a serious student" of jazz is how we "have a good time." The listening is fun, but so is the learning. Lists can be fun because they provoke further study of or more thought about the music. The more there is to back up a listing/rating system, the more interesting it is (e.g., Cook and Morton or AMG) to consider. I agree, though, none can be conclusive.

    Julius Hemphill

I could never speak for Chuck, but I often find WSQ to be too constrained an environment for the musicians involved. Don't get me wrong, I like WSQ. But I prefer to hear any of those guys, especially Hemphill and Bluiett, in freer settings.
  4. This would be the Tennessee version rather than the Texas version.
  5. You won't regret it. Your next step will be to find an Indian grocery, or at least a middle eastern one which will stock many of the same ingredients: bulk whole spices (for a fraction of what they cost at the supermarket), whole milk yogurt, Indian breads, basmati rice, ghee, Indian legumes, pickles, chutneys, etc. Enjoy. Edit: Looks like Kenny and I were posting at the same time. So, in other words, ditto.
  6. I highly recommend Julie Sahni's "Classic Indian Cooking." I would go so far as to say it's the best work on the subject in English.
  7. Even more than that, he's obviously not suited to work with students or young people, at all, especially in an educational environment.
  8. Try the JSP set "Bix and Tram." 4CDs for about 20 bucks. JRT Davies' expert remastering. All the crucial material.
  9. You should just spend more time in JRM. It don't get no better than that.
  10. No I mean that SMS is not a concert record. The performances in the film were taken from several concerts and edited together. The sound was retouched in post production. The resulting music is a soundtrack for the film SMS more than it is "live" recording. The SMS album (as originally released) was a disappointing sampler from the movie. That said, I love the movie SMS and would like to have the full soundtrack. Of course, having the DVD would be just about as good.
  11. I think this is a lot of it: total intolerance for imperfection. Walsh, for example, would respond to crucial mistakes by simply saying, "That cannot happen" and you knew you were gone. Parcells certainly exhibits this quality. Not everyone can pull it off, though. Players have to buy in. They do with Parcells and Belechik b/c they have skins on the wall. When Haslett tries it with the Saints, I think they just tune him out.
  12. One big problem with the album "Stop Making Sense" is that it is only a sampling of songs from the movie "Stop Making Sense" leaving out some of the best numbers and disrupting the "plot" created by the film. SMS is not, like TNOTBITTH, a live recording of a concert. It's a soundtrack from a film.
  13. or Minew. I have never made this argument. Though Republicans who are jazz fans are such an unusaual minority that they deserve their own moniker, like the Log Cabin Republicans have. Maybe "Woodshed Republicans." I do think that politics has always been a part of jazz, particulary as politics relates to racism and civil rights. I find the confrontation of jazz with these issues to be inspiring: Waller's "Black and Blue", Holiday's rendition of "Strange Fruit", Amstrong's boycott of the "Goodwill Tour", Nina Simone's work, Mingus' "Fables of Faubus", Roach's "We Insist!", Rollins' "Freedom Now Suite", Brotzmann's "Fuck de Boere." Not to pick at old scabs, but one the most offensive things about Burns' documentary was that, after devoting so much time to musicians' struggles against racism, he criticized the overtly political music of people like Roach and Shepp as a distracting, disruptive, wrong direction for jazz.
  14. I have Witness, Freak In, and the Infinite. I like them but don't find myself listening all that often. OTOH, I do enjoy his work with Masada quite a bit. Esp. like the live albums in Sevilla and Jerusalem.
  15. Minew, Blow it out your ear. Have any idea how pathetic it is you bring up political affiliations? Why don't you declare I'm a racist and complete the circle? Call me Kreskin.
  16. Geoff, Please ignore the schnauzer and continue posting. He'll chase you for a couple of blocks, yapping loudly, and then go back to his yard, the politics forum. (Suprise: he's a republican.) If you try shoo him, the yapping will get louder; he will likely bark something with the word PATHETIC in it. The rest of us are enjoying your well-written and thoughtful posts.
  17. Jazz Record Mart is a must-see landmark. And don't forget Fred Anderson's Velvet Lounge. Get some ribs from Fitzee's next door to take in. And try to catch the $3 Vandermark show at the Empty Bottle. If you like Mexican food, try to hit Rick Bayless' Frontera Grill.

    Steve Lacy

Recently saw Lacy here in N.O. with the "Beat Suite" quintet. Great show, esp. seeing George Lewis. Shortly thereafter, I heard a rumor that Lacy is severely ill (maybe pancreatic cancer?). Anyone know if this is true?
  19. Bring on USC. Then Leinart can have a little taste of what Jason White was eating last night. I was sitting in the nosebleeds so I couldn't really tell but I'm pretty sure his nose must have been bleeding, too. The BCS debate will rage on, I'm sure, but the Tigers have the best defense I've seen in college football in a loooong time.
  20. If the boys in blue wanted to play for a national championship, they should have eaten their Wheaties on their trips to Eugene and Iowa City. I will be rooting for them, though, to pave the way for LSU's first championship in 45 years.
  21. St. Louis Chicago
  22. Here's Boykin, Jim: Sunday - December 21 ******************************** * Avant-garde jam session w/ David Boykin, Karl Seigfried, Mike Reed 4 PM at the Empty Bottle - 1035 N. Western - 773-276-3600 (donation) Thanks Uli! I plan to be at as much of that as I can.
  23. Diana Krall marries Elvis Costello TORONTO, Ontario (AP) -- Jazz singer Diana Krall has tied the knot with her beau of one year, Elvis Costello, in a wedding near London, Costello's public relations firm confirmed on Wednesday. The couple married Saturday night in a ceremony at Elton John's mansion in Surrey, England, Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper reported. "The wedding was a private event with close friends and family in attendance," Shore Fire Media, Costello's public relations firm, said in a statement. About 150 guests, including Paul McCartney and Canada's consul general to New York, Pamela Wallin, were sworn to secrecy, the newspaper reported. Krall grew up outside Vancouver, British Columbia. The 39-year-old jazz singer and Costello, 49, live in New York and have a home on Vancouver Island. Krall's management company, Sam Feldman and Associates, did not return a call, and her music label declined comment on the report. The marriage is a first for Krall. Costello's previous two marriages ended in divorce.
  24. Uli, While we have you on the line, what can you tell us about 3030? What kind of venue is that? How big? Etc? Also, anything else going on that week in Chicago (besides what's listed above) that would be of interest of to creative music enthusiasts? Thanks.
