To be honest, I was a little disappointed with this one. Hamid Drake is a bit too prominent in my opinion. Is such a thing possible?!? To my ears, yes, it is... I think he more or less drowns Fred Anderson out at times. I hear ya. It's just that I've been on a Hamid kick for a few years with no end in sight. To my ears, he can do no wrong! We'll blame the recording engineers for this one.

MOUNTAIN BIKING SEASON HAS ARRIVED!
minew replied to randissimo's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
That's how I get to work every day. Of course, in a month or so it's going to be unbearably hot down here. That's the time of year when you leave a little earlier and go a little slower. For now, though, I can haul ass without working up a tremendous sweat. It's a beautiful thing..... I, too, bike commute about 6.5 miles each way to work on a "vintage" 1990 Giant Iguana. Though it wouldn't be called a MTB or ATB today (no suspension), that's exactly what it was when I bought it. I do the bike commute nearly every day, winter or summer, rain or shine. It helps that I can shower and change at the university rec center. Since you asked, reasons I bike commute in order of importance: 1. Riding bikes is fun 2. Keeps me out of rush hour drive time 3. Exercise 4. Leaves the car for the wife and family 5a. Saves gas money 5b. Deprives wahabbist terrorists of needed funding 6. Good for the environment -
The Peter Brotzmann Tentet, on a rare if not unprecedented tour through the South, will perform in New Orleans at the Contemporary Arts Center on April 6 at 8:00 PM. Tickets are available from the CAC at cacno.org This version of the Tentet includes Brotzmann, Ken Vandermark, Joe McPhee, Jeb Bishop, Kent Kessler, Michael Zerang, and Mats Gustafson among others. Earlier that same day, Vandermark and Paal Nilssen-Love will appear on the Tulane University campus for a workshop/discussion/performance on free jazz/improvised music. This will be similar to the program Vandermark did at the Jazz Institute in Chicago recently. The Vandermark event is at 12:30 PM on April 6 at the Rogers Memorial Chapel on the TU campus (corner Zimple and Broadway). Free and open to the public. Come on down!

Three words (one of them hyphenated): THE DRIED RAT-DOG Peter Brotzmann & Hamid Drake 1995 Okkadisk OD12004

During errant surfs, accidental viewings of "The Surreal Life" have found Ron Jeremy to be, at least, the most reasonable human being in that house.

Well said! So do I. Marsalis Fact: Wynton Marsalis was actually named after Wynton Kelly by his father, Ellis Marsalis, himself a bop pianist and Kelly admirer.

Manchego! And if you're hooked on cheddar, try one of the real ones: Keen's or Montgomery's sold by Neal's Yard Dairy in London and available at your better stores (e.g., Whole Foods).

Had them at Bozo's out in Metairie. Normally reliable. 4 of us were there. 2 of us ate oysters and we both got sick about 36 hours later.

I like that space, too, though I hear it gets mixed reviews from some of the performers. I had tickets for Shepp/Rudd but missed it due to a bout with some bad oysters I ate Thursday night. I'm still getting over both misfortunes. FYI, we're working on a campus event with a couple of guys from the Tentet for the day of the 6th. Let me know if you'd like more details - PM me your email or something.

Unfortunately not. Mats is on a tight schedule and needs to return to Sweden shortly after the Brotzmann Tentet tour. We are very lucky to have the opportunity to host their first US tour here in Texas. We have been trying to get the Thing here for the last 2 years. I am going to try to make it to all 3 concerts, I'll post a review on this forum. Actually, the Tentet is making it here to N.O. on April 6 (CAC if you're interested). That's why I wondered if this collective might be wandering this way, too.

I adore both. Yes, even Parker's extended circular-breathed soprano solos that my wife says sound like "someone killing a bagpipe."

If you're gonna drink the cheap stuff, High Life is the Champagne of Beers. Of course, Schaefer is the one beer to have when you're havin' more than one.

Any chance they might cross the Sabine on that tour?

To paraphrase George Will: If better use has ever been made of radio (and internet audio streaming) I have not seen it and do not expect to see better.

What are the East Coast dates?
-
Don't tell my wife but I've had a thing for Watts ever since Mulholland Drive.
-
I, for one, AM a fan of hometown hero Kidd Jordan. Anyone have dates for this tour? Checked Eremite.com but didn't see any.

I've seen both iterations in the last couple years and both were excellent. Parker is always great but I really enjoyed Aoki (at the "On the Run" release gig). I found his repetitive funky grooves kind of new and infectious.

We're actually due a visit from the Brotzmann Tentet in April. (Sans the great Hamid Drake, though, I'm afraid.) I can feel the excitement (my own) building already. Anyone seen one of the tentets? This particular iteration will include Brotz-Vandermark-Gustafsson-Williams-Bishop-Mcphee-LonbergHolm-Kessler-Zerang-NielsonLove.

The Hawes book is great - one of the best jazz autobiographies along with Mingus' problematic but riveting "Beneath the Underdog." If you're into out music at all, I recommend John Litwieler's "The Freedom Principle." It's a bit dated (written in the mid eighties) but maybe the best book on an era and style of jazz that's not written about much.

I have seen this group a few times in the last couple years so I can't really say "once in a lifetime event" but it sure feels like it each time. This trio combines perhaps the three leading exponents/practiioners of the traditions/approaches of the three great centers of free/out music (Chicago, New York, Berlin-London). DO NOT miss it!

Does Tide Detergent Irritate Your Skin?
minew replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Many detergents bother my skin. Usually in the form of contact dermatitis, especially on my feet. I find the one billed as "Cheer-Free" (free of scent, etc.) irritates me the least.
