  1. from the Times Picayune website late Tuesday. Tuesday, August 30, 2005 Children's Hospital under siege Tuesday, 11:45 p.m. Late Tuesday, Gov. Blanco spokeswoman Denise Bottcher described a disturbing scene unfolding in uptown New Orleans, where looters were trying to break into Children's Hospital. Bottcher said the director of the hospital fears for the safety of the staff and the 100 kids inside the hospital. The director said the hospital is locked, but that the looters were trying to break in and had gathered outside the facility. The director has sought help from the police, but, due to rising flood waters, police have not been able to respond. Bottcher said Blanco has been told of the situation and has informed the National Guard. However, Bottcher said, the National Guard has also been unable to respond.
  2. The water is still rising so the worst may not be over but we're already fairly sure we've lost everything. Our house is in Lakeview, about 1.5 miles from the main breach. Photos we've seen from nearby blocks show water at rooflines. We've been in Baton Rouge since Saturday and, aside from 30 hrs without power, have been comfortable and safe with friends. We are safe (me, wife, two kids) and I've been able to touch base with almost all family and close friends and they are, too. In that sense, we are very fortunate. Aside from being diplaced and dispossessed, the most difficult thing for us has been the total lack of communication in about a 10 parish area. Phones of any kind are useless. While the power was out, all information came from the two operable radio stations who were also powerless to make phone calls. Since we can't go back for at least a week and won't want to live there for a month or two or more, we're getting ready to leave for Chicago to stay with family for a while. When they get sick of us, we'll head for Eugene, OR and family there. When the time comes, we'll definitely be going back and rebuilding, as long as we don't get the finger from the good hands people. For now, I'm (unexpectedly) looking forward to the Chicago Jazz Festival.
  3. I'm having the same issue w/ Safari (Mac OS X)
  4. He's probably been too busy digesting Ken Vandermark's new 12-cd set.
  5. Haven't been in over a decade but I remember that it gets pretty sticky in the warm months so you may want to make sure your accomodations have air conditioning - not safe to assume it will. The Bari Gotic is a great place to wander off the Ramblas. Lots of lunch places with cheap menus del dia. Even cheaper is Pollo Rico across the Ramblas in the Barrio Chino, reputedly not a great place to be at night. As indicated above, don't miss the modern stuff either, especially the Gaudi. Try an absinthe bar if you're game and definitely try the seafood tapas in the bars around the port. The subway is nice and easy to use. Also a nice beach and coast town about 30 min. train ride away called Sitges. About all I can remember at this time.

    Ken Vandermark

As usual, I'm in Ken's Corner. I like the Sound in Action Trio, "Design in Time" (KV + 2 drummers, Mulvenna and Barry) on Delmark. That's what first got me into Ken and a lot of (Okka, Delmark, Atavistic, etc.) associated stuff. Agree about KV and the Scandinavians. Saw him do a workshop with Nilssen-Love that was very interesting. Got me interested in the Thing, et al.
  7. Agreed. Any discussion of "best" pizza that doesn't address these two joints doesn't merit reading.

    Maurice Brown

As I mentioned in the earlier thread about Brown, I went to see him at Snug and walked out. There was nothing like the playing on the Anderson disc, which I've heard and liked. There were some numbers that crossed the border into smooth, complete with Brown-induced audience hand clapping. Too much for me. There are a lot of solid working local musicians here who don't understand the fuss. They see just another good guy with a lot of clippings. As for me, I prefer our other Chicago import, Ed Petersen.
  9. And this weekend for a mere 20 bucks.... I will be there. Dear Friends of the Velvet Lounge: Thanks to all who attended and contributed to the Velvet LoungeBenefit this past Sunday at the Hothouse (or contributed on the website)—it was a beautiful day of music and raised several thousand dollars for the cause. A special thanks also goes out to the Hothouse, Marguerite and her staff, and to all the musicians who donated their time and artistry. The following is a partial list of musicians who have agreed to appear at the second benefit, Friday night May 27, at the Velvet Lounge itself: Fred Anderson, David Boykin Expanse, Nicole Mitchell Black Earth, Henry Grimes, Corey Wilkes, Ed Wilkerson, Douglas Ewart, Mwata Bowden, Tatsu Aoki, Michael Zerang, Dushun Mosley, Jabari Liu, the Gam Squad, Dennis Winslett, Jim Baker, Dan Godston, Isaiah Spencer, Isaiah Jackson, Rob Pleshar, Malachi Thompson, and others. Fred Anderson

Speaking of Fred, I think the cover for this is a mere 20. I will be making the trip to Chicago for this. minew Dear Friends of the Velvet Lounge: Thanks to all who attended and contributed to the Velvet LoungeBenefit this past Sunday at the Hothouse (or contributed on the website)—it was a beautiful day of music and raised several thousand dollars for the cause. Bob Dorough

Lyrics to the De La Soul version, which I also enjoy: Pos: 3 That’s the magic number Yes it is It’s the magic number Somewhere in this hip-hop soul community Was born 3 mase, dove and me And that’s the magic number (what does it all mean? ) Difficult preaching is posdnuos’ pleasure Pleasure and preaching starts in the heart Something that stimulates the music in my measure Measure in my music, raised in three parts Casually see but don’t do like the soul ’cause seein’ and doin’ are actions for monkeys Doin’ hip hop hustle, no rock and roll Unless your name’s brewster, ’cause brewster’s a punky Parents let go ’cause there’s magic in the air Criticising rap shows you’re out of order Stop look and listen to the phrasin’ fred astaires And don’t get offended while mase do-se-do’s your daughter A tri-camera rolls since our music’s now set Fly rhymes are stored on a d.a.i.s.y. production It stands for da inner sound y’all and y’all can bet That the action’s not a trick, but showing the function Everybody wants to be a deejay Everybody wants to be an emcee But being speakers are the best And you don’t have to guess De la soul posse consists of three And that’s the magic number Dove: This here piece of the pie Is not dessert but the course that we dine And three out of every darn time The effect is mmmm when a daisy grows in your mind Showing true position, this here piece is Kissin’ the part of the pie that’s missin’ When that negative number fills up the casualty Maybe you can subtract it You can call it your lucky partner Maybe you can call it your adjective But odd as it may be Without my 1 and 2 where would there be My 3 Mase pos and me And that’s the magic number Focus is formed by flaunts to the soul Souls who flaunt styles gain praises by pounds Common are speakers who are never scrolls Scrolls written daily creates a new sound Listeners listen ’cause this here is wisdom Wisdom of a speaker, a dove and a plug Set aside a legal substance to feed ’em For now get ’em high off this dialect drug Time is a factor so it’s time to count Count not the negative actions of one Speakers of soul say it’s time to shout Three forms the soul to a positive sum Dance to this fix and flex every muscle Space can be filled if you rise like my lumber Advance to the tune but don’t do the hustle Shake, rattle, roll to my magic number Now you may try to subtract it But it just won’t go away Three times one? (what is it? ) (one, two, three!) And that’s the magic number (yo, what’s up? ) (1, 2, 3) (I say, children, what does it all mean? ) (woah-woah-wo, 1, 2, 3) (I wouldn’t lie to you) (no more no less, that’s the magic number) (no more no less) (what it is? ) (no more no less) (is this the future? ) (no more no less) (do the shang-a-lang) (no more no less) (no one on the subway ever chats to me) (no more no less) (anybody in the audience ever get hit by a car? ) (no more no less) (how high’s the water, mama? ) (no more no less) (how high’s the water, mama? ) (no more no less) (three feet high and rising) (no more no less) (three) (that’s the magic number)

  13. Accuracy and precision are not the hallmarks of any Murdoch oracle.
  14. In THIS world, it is. Which is why we all choose to live here as often as we can.
  15. Clem, There's no there, there, right? And dedication=name dropping, correct? Noted. You've effectively and cleverly made your points about KV on many occasions here. Why not leave some space in this thread for those of us who, for whatever inscrutable reasons, are still into his stuff. I'm not trying to start anything here, especially about this issue which has been explored ad nauseum. There's so much that we appreciate in common, why amplify the differences with a bomb like this? Probably won't buy this but would sure like to hear it. Anybody see a price attached?
  16. We've had better luck recently with visits from Brotzmann, Billy Bang, Wm. Parker, Hamid Drake, Vandermark, Evan Parker, Mephista, Randy Weston, Muhal Richard Abrams, Ahmad Jamal, and Fred Anderson. It has slowed down in the last few months but hopefully not for long.

  18. OEM is probably "Original Equipment Manufacturer" as (usually) in OEM number, the long numerical code that comes on a sticker (usually) somewhere on your software packaging and which has to be entered at installation. Your problem might be related to this number or some other copy protection feature.
  19. BUMMER about Fitzies! There was nothing like downing some of Fitzies Q on the Velvet's formica tables while watching Douglas Ewart and friends go at it with multiple didgeridoos. To know the Velvet is to love it. I'll be there with bells on for the 5/27 gig.
  20. Saw the Kollektief last night at Snug Harbor. What a rush of ideas! They played about 3 30-minute "pieces," each of which seeemed to encompass the entire history of jazz and related musics (as advertised). Sometimes the individual solos contained most of jazz history. I lost count of styles, but while I was still counting I noticed: ragtime, boogie-woogie, stride, marching band, trad, big band swing, polka, klezmer, Cage, Glass, Gershwin, bop, Miles' 60s 4tet, free blowing, polyrythymic/polyharmonic ensemble playing, Latin, and animal noises (a la ODJB). Breuker capped things off with a long solo that first harkened back 'Machine Gun' and delvoved into halting practice scales, saxophone laughter, and braying like a donkey. They are on world tour to commemorate 30 years of playing together. Next stop, I believe, is Chicago, which makes sense if you think about it. Don't miss it.
  21. Check out any discussion board revolving around any Southeastern Conference athletic program. It's as though Benny and Vardamon lept off of Faulkner's pages to hurl insults at one another in cyberspace. It's Darwin's waiting room in VBB.
  22. Oh I see, you wait until you find out I'm leaving. Seriously, It depends on what your looking for. Housing costs are still reasonable and the job market is good. Plenty of future growth projected. If you don't mind everthing being spread so far out it may be worth looking into. Actually, the thought of Organissimo buddies made Arizona look better. We definitely need good housing prices and available jobs. I don't know how a first time homebuyer could do it in California. AB- Has anyone suggested Oregon's Willamette Valley to you? Portland is pricey but the rest of it has a reasonable cost of living. Weather very moderate. Lots of cultural amenities and universities. Even some jazz. Stunning geography (really geographIES). Wide variety of people. Logs, logs, logs. I used to vacation in Oregon all the time. Though I haven't done it in a while my memories of Oregon are those of a beautiful state. I've been trying to talk my wife into considering Oregon. We have some close friends who say Portland is the best place they ever lived. Minew, I missed your post, but thanks for your suggestion! My in-laws moved to Eugene a few years ago. I've visited several times since. If you dig the outdoors at all (camping, hiking, biking, etc.) there's no better place. Also, forgot to mention the wines. They're excellent. Lots of local breweries if you prefer beer. Ocean an hour to the west. Desert to the east. Two mountain ranges. Not sure about the job scene, though.
  23. What rolls down stairs and over the chairs and into your neighbor's dog? It fits on your back, It's good for a snack, Everyone knows it's log. It's log, it's log, It's big, it's heavy, it's wood. It's log, it's log, it's better than bad, it's good. From BLAMMO!

  25. On to food.. On the haute end, the hottest tables are at August and Peristyle, maybe Cuvee. For more traditional N.O. cuisine, try Clancy's or Brigsten's. For a trip back in culinary time try one of the grand old ladies: Galatoires, Arnaud's, or Antoine's. For the cuisine of the people, Uglesich's (on Baronne) is a good bet for seafood as are Mandina's and Liuzza's in Mid-City. Don't forget your muffalettas (Central Grocery), oysters (Acme), and po-boys (Johnny's, Parasol's, or just about anywhere but the quarter). Our best ethnic is Vietnamese. Try any of the Pho Tau Bay branches. Cool off with the original sno-ball (or sno-bliz) at Hansen's on Tchoupitoulas. Happy to provide more and more detail if wanted...
