The Goodman just arrived, a handwritten number 2536.

I purchased Goodman, Savory, and MJQ on 6/25. Tracking says I should receive it today. Hmmm, maybe one of the last Goodmans?

That was the second Mosaic I purchased.

I listened to some of the Blakey set this morning. It was the first Mosaic I purchased.

I bought the Beehive set maybe two months ago. I have about 28 (ish) Mosaic boxes and and a handful of selects, but I haven't made a purchase from them in about 10 years. My interest was renewed from seeing some Mosaic boxes come up on Ebay searches. I hope my purchase didn't cause them to be out of stock!

.... when the union found out (just before the band went on)..... What union are you referring to? Musicians'? 'Cause I could tell you tales about IATSE when trying to record in a union hall... (IATSE is the stage hands union...) I guess i misunderstood, i thought the union being referred to was the electricical or stagehands, which may be the same union. Upon rereading jsngry's post, i realised he was referring to the musician's local. My post refers to a story in "the Real Zappa Book", an 'as told to' Bio. I have worked with electrical, projection, and stagehand unions in Chicago. (I am not bashing unions, i am in IBEW)

I recall reading in a Zappa bio that when the union found out (just before the band went on) that a show was being recorded for radio and TV, the union rep demanded their scale for broadcast work, instead of performance/sound reinforcement. It was $9000 EACH extra from Zappa, the radio, and the TV people ($27,000), or they would pull the plug. They got the money, but that is why Zappa refused to play in NY for many years. As for live Blue Notes, I recently purchased Donald Byrd at the Half Note.

Paul, I've heard some of your recent recording on WDCB, your take on Caravan is damn cool...

The odd thing is I borrowed the Monk at the 5 Spot CD from the library yesterday, and was enjoying listening to it in my car yesterday and today. I've heard Monk with Rouse and I've heard Monk with Coltrane, but I never heard Monk with Griffin on tenor. He had his own style, it kicked ass. I loved his playing. I saw him with Lockjaw twice in the same week at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago when it was at the Blackstone Hotel. I was seventeen and just getting into jazz. A few years later, after Lockjaw had passed , I saw Griffin in a quartet setting. I got his autograph on the liner notes of a reissue of the Introducing Johnny Griffin CD. He looked at the CD (this was maybe 1989) and said with a smile: "Thats an ooooooooold one!"

I always thought "Spectrum" kicked ass.

Could be, but would Getz's tenor book be anywhere as difficult to reconstitute as the bari book? Also, the story -- which certainly may be apocryphal -- fits Chaloff's personality much better than it does Getz's. (Stan certainly could be evil but not I think in that confrontational manner, at least not with a male figure of authority like Herman.) Finally, the story as told segues nicely into the familiar tale in which Woody pisses on the semi-zonked Serge's leg while both men are standing at a bar. Both stories are in Gene Lees' Herman bio "The Leader of the Band."

A few days ago, after hearing a recording Lockjaw playing with Basie, I broke out my three Jaws recordings, and I realized I needed a bunch more. It was cool to read this thread and get reviews of what is out there. I remember back in the day, (1980?) you could go to the Jazz Showcase in Chicago and get in for $10 with a student ID. I sat through through three sets of Jaws and Johnny Griffin (with a very young Kenny Washington on drums) twice in one week.

I remember reading a little anecdote in a Woody Herman bio. After the music-in-the-river incident (or possibly another Serge Chaloff incident) Woody and Serge were standing crushed up against each other in an extremely crowded bar, after a gig. Woody took this opportunity to get some "payback" by peeing on Serge's leg. Since the bar was so crowded, Serge couldn't move away, even after he realized what was happening. As for Chaloff's tone, it had an aggressive, biting quality on some of his solo stuff, although he stayed in a bebop style.

I'm not sure why, but for some reason I like even the pop tunes on the GW Mosaic. Maybe just because I grew up with a lot of that music, but also there's a sense of spirit in the GW band that even the commercial material can't ruin. IMHO. The musicianship and arrangements are top notch, I like 99.9% (or theirabouts) of the set, I think it was my first listen and it sneaked up on me in the shuffle play mode. I was hearing piccolos and a harpsichord, and my brain was trying to figure out the tune. I thought it sounded kind of Muzaky, like ane orchestral attempt to rock out, but upon subsequent listenings it on a good sound system, I got a better appreciation for it. You are right, their is a highly professional sense in the band, they know how to approach everything. (as for commercial material, I've always liked Woody Herman's version of Deep Purple's "Hush.")

Lets see, a few weeks ago I had a little extra cash, and I thought I better spend it before I end up needing it for something practical. I hadn't purchase a Mosaic in a year, so I surfed the website. I surfed it agan the next day when the "free shipping" message appeared. I went for the Basie set, because it was the highest priced item on my "want" list. I ended up spending more than 300.00, but thats okay, I've been enjoying the music non stop. (except for the brief moment when I was out running with my iPod and Gerald Wilson's version of the Door's "Light my Fire" appeared in the shuffle mix, and I nearly hurled my iPod to the ground and stomped on it, but I surpressed the urge and changed the selection, now it's all good.) I am surprised Mosaic is having a sale, the must have had a pretty good infusion of cash, just from the members of this board just from the free shipping. Maybe they recognize a trend, lower prices= more sales...

Gerald Wilson...some fantastic arrangements and section playing.

I like it. I hated the icons that changed when you scroll the mouse over them.

I've been going there for 25 years, and have seen the biggest names in Jazz. I'm looking forward to a reopening. There is no other place in Chicago like the Showcase.

Yeah, I joined a community big band a year ago and I developed an appreciation for arrangements and section playing, after a few decades of listening to mostly small group jazz.
