  1. Wow, Parkertown - we posted at exactly the same time. I found my Parlan Mosaic set at a used music store - one of my very best used finds! And a set that I find myself returning to with some regularity.
  2. This is a great piece of info., Robert - thank you! I'm going to search for this.

    Jack Sheldon

Jim, regarding your question (and with absolutely *no* sarcasm intended) consider what Jack might have had in common at the time with "the junkies" besides great chops. Jack has been fairly open about his past which stands in sharp contrast with how he lives today. And yeah ------- he is completely HYSTERICAL on his best nights doing his bits. I caught him on a particularly "blue" night when half the crowd was losing it, and the other half was getting uptight at his humor. Those of us who were dying noticed the sour-puss expressions on the faces of the uptights, which only amplified our hysteria into complete abandon.
  5. Yeah - he did have a stroke or aneurysm, don't know the exact distinction between the two. What I heard is that he studied his own recorded work, and this became one of his primary tools in regaining his playing. I caught him with Joey DeFrancesco and Byron Landham in L.A. around the time he recorded "Live at Yoshi's". Same intensity as you hear on the recording ------- the crowd was going crazy. One of my favorite live experiences of that year at the Catalina Bar & Grill. Continuous waves of energy lifting the audience.
  6. Like everyone else who has posted here, I am sooooooooooo pleased with this set.
  7. GOM just said what I was about to suggest. If you're coming from a more mainstream place the two compositions on Intuition (Intuition & Digression) will feel relatively accessible, and were recorded long before The Shape of Jazz to Come.

    Hank Jones

JSngry - I understand completely about your "odd choice." Mike Wofford, an undersung monster of the piano is such an artful comper that he can (unintentionally) distract my attention from a soloist. jazzbo - your use of the word *was* leads me to ask - you are aware that Hank is still with us?
  9. Daniel A. poses a good question. More that one person has told me that it can be either: Moe' tee uhn or Moe' shun.
  10. Thanks, Mike & Michel! BTW, mikeweil - you'll never "torture" me with German pronunciation. My Mom is German.

    Hank Jones

Oh! And forgot to mention that Hank is coming to my town with George Mraz and Dennis Mackrel in a couple of months. Will I be there? DAMN STRAIGHT!!

Yes Daniel - count me in as a Hank Jones admirer. As far as more recent recodings go, "The Oracle" with Dave Holland and Billy Higgins is (IMHO) a real gem. Going back further, there are a couple of piano duo releases that I'm very fond of; "An Evening with Two Grand Pianos" with John Lewis (vinyl only) and "Our Delights" with Tommy Flanagan. The latter was released in CD format, but don't know if it's OOP. Both of these are beautiful, elegant recordings - timeless.
  13. Thanks, Mike. I'm assuming it would be accented thusly: Mar-cee-ull' So'-lull (and thanks for you input, also Chuck...............)
  14. I've tried asking the pronunciation of Martial Solal's name on another bulletin board with no luck also. No one knows?
  15. Not in order: Mike Wofford, Denny Zeitlin, Brad Mehldau, Keith Jarrett, Kenny Barron
  16. FWIW, I enjoy Chet's playing on the Art Pepper date (Playboys) as well as Grey December. I'll have to give his recording w/Warne Marsh (Blues for a Reason) a couple more spins to get an impression.
  17. I've wondered for the longest time about the pronunciation of Martial Solal's name. Anybody?
