  1. Heading out with some buddies to a local casino to hear Tower of Power tonight. They have their original drummer and bass player (Dave Garibaldi and Rocco Prestia) with them these days, so the grooves are extra funky!
  2. Thanks, Mike! Just ordered a copy. Looking forward to hearing those Onzy Matthews arrangements again!
  3. There's Med Flory (L.A. saxophonist, leader of Supersax) who appeared in the original "Nutty Professor" as well as dozens of TV shows in the '60s-'80s.
  4. Several years ago I was reading Kenny Werner's book, Effortless Mastery. Throughout the book, he referred to the impact of heroine on the lives of jazz musicians. I kept wondering who this female protagonist could be...
  5. Great news! Congratulations to you and your whole family, Jim!
  6. When I saw him in the mid-'80s he was playing a shiny new Super Action 80, and he sounded... ... just like Joe Henderson!
  7. Thanks, kids! Pretty busy day, but a good one. My lovely wife gave me a Kindle (the e-book reader from Amazon). Pretty cool. Of course, the fact that I gave her one about three weeks ago for her birthday gave me a chance to check it out and decide if I really wanted one. A couple of days ago she asked what I wanted for my birthday dinner and I flippantly said, "Corn Dogs and Tater Tots!" Then, as I thought about it, that seemed like a tasty dinner. So, sure enough, we did Corn Dogs and Tater Tots. She also picked up some nice chicken sausages and wrapped those in crescent roll dough. Served with a stone ground mustard, a Jack Daniels mustard and a classic yellow French's. So that and a couple of: made for a nice dinner!
  8. I like Craig Ferguson and Letterman (yeah, Letterman is getting older and loopier, but he still entertains me). Never really dug Leno. Liked Conan in the later timeslot and in NYC. Saw video this morning of the head injury incident. Conan was doing some bit with Teri Hatcher; looked like they were running some kind of race. But they were both dripping wet as they ran into the studio, and Conan slipped on the stage, fell backward and smacked his head on the floor. He looked pretty out of it when he got up. Ouch!
  9. So are the kids still diggin' on it these days? I was quite enthusiastic to get me some good cheap hooch when I was a young 'un. It really wasn't all that complicated. Besides Cold Duck there was Sloe Gin, Lime Vodka and Seven & Sevens, to name a few. The s w e e t entry-level drinks. It was rum & coke for me.
  10. I'd be interested in checking out some of the CL Franklin sermons! That's Aretha's father, and I've heard that his song-like phrasing from the pulpit was a big influence on Aretha's singing style.
  11. Welcome back MG! I can't believe it took 16 replies to this thread before someone mentioned the dongle! We're slipping, people!
  12. He sure plays them on "Coltrane's Sound." I went back and listened to TNHATE from Coltrane's sound, and yes, the subs are there on McCoy's solo, but to my ears they're just barely there in the first 4 bars, then stronger on the 2nd 4 bars. On the first bridge of McCoy's solo, it sounds like Steve Davis is a little late getting off the pedal, so that sets the first phrase a little askew, and McCoy leaves some space where those subs happen. So much for the clarity of my memory! It's possible I may have been...uh...less-than-clear headed during some of my listening sessions in the past.
  13. I hear you. It can get to be a real obstacle course! In addition to 26-2, I really like the tunes where Trane just drops in a little curve ball on otherwise standard changes, like on the bridge to Body & Soul or the bridge of The Night Has A Thousand Eyes. Just enough to catch your ear, but not so much as to become cumbersome. Interesting to me that McCoy would often opt out of those subs on his solos.
  14. Back on topic, one of my favorite "Coltrane Changes" tunes is 26-2. I'm able to hear enough of Confirmation changes in it that I can better appreciate how the Coltrane matrix fits over it.
  15. I've seen that book, but haven't really checked it out. Thanks for the info! Kids today... don't get me started. I just wish they'd get the hell off my lawn. (we need a "grumpy old man" emoticon!)
  16. I've always thought of "Fifth House" as being loosely based on "What Is This Thing", so it's all kinda the same thing. Nice Rhythm changes! Slightly off topic: using the "other" bridge that goes to IV, one of my teachers (guitarist Jack Petersen) used to talk about a "Sears & Roebuck" bridge and a "Montgomery Ward" bridge (implying that they were very common). One of them was the actual Rhythm bridge and the other was the "other" one, going to IV (like Honeysuckle Rose). Anyone here familiar with the terms "Sears & Roebuck" and "Montgomery Ward" for those bridges? Which one is which?

  18. Do you Tallahassee guys get a day off in honor of?
  19. I ordered three Selects from CD Universe yesterday. Dexter, Woody Herman and Onzy Matthews. Got an email today telling me the Dexter is "back ordered" with the caveat that sometimes back ordered items never come in, and the order will be canceled on 10/24/09 if it's not in by then. Damn! I have some of that Dexter on vinyl, but was looking forward to that Select.
