  1. I'm a big Letterman fan. Watching the show right now. I have heard him mention in passing that he doesn't really like jazz. He and I have to just "agree to disagree" about that. I thought the quip last night with Michael Keaton was funny. I also like Craig Ferguson, and he has also mentioned a distaste for jazz. He's still damn entertaining.
  2. Ted, I don't know what you have in mind. I've looked up nauseous at dictionary.com, and here is what it says: 1. affected with nausea; nauseated: to feel nauseous. 2. causing nausea; sickening; nauseating. Merriam-Webster.com lists the two definitions in the reverse order: 1 : causing nausea or disgust : nauseating 2 : affected with nausea or disgust I hear many people use "nauseous" when they have nausea. Merriam-Webster lists the first definition for "nauseous" as causing nausea. Of course, the whole dictionary definition, "language is a living, changing thing" discussion gets tedious very quickly. Oh, and just to get the thread back on track: Boy, what about that divorce settlement? $750mil sure is a lot of scratch!
  3. I try to keep those straight in my own pea brain by relating "nauseous" to "noxious." You know, something that would make me "nauseated." It's one of those, whatyacall, pneumatic devices, to help me remember...
  4. Don't know if I'm a full-fledged cultist, but I am a long-time Mac user. And I found that pretty damn funny!
  5. Chances are that a university library doesn't want vinyl. Most of the vinyl at the university where I work is in "deep storage" off-site, and they don't want any more.
  6. I wonder that, as well. Seems like it would he hard on the bars of the vibes to chuck them onto the stage like that. Unless he grabbed a "gag" set of bars when he was offstage.
  7. Watch to the end... http://www.youtube.c...player_embedded
  8. Happy Birthday, Chuck. Hope you have a dandy day!
  9. Aren't those the two fabled unreleased sides from the end of Miles' contract with Prestige?
  10. Yeah, but that scene struck me as a little weak. I mean, he's got his black suit on and a white shirt. Put the bow tie on and no one would notice it's not really a tux.

Some previous discussion of the flugabone here. Don't know when it originated, but I know they were around in the 1970's.
  12. He appears to be cool with it, judging by his statements in an interview from last year. The pertinent line from the interview: "I'm not going to be sitting around nitpicking the character for accuracy. If he votes Republican and has sex with a goat, I'm just going to have to live with that."
  13. I hear you. And the reason is... ...the schlep.
  14. Thanks for the shout out, Paul! When I first got into playing baritone, the list of guys who became my primary influences definitely included Ronnie Cuber (I wore out a copy of "Cuber Libre" on Xanadu). Also on the list: Pepper Adams Nick Brignola Bruce Johnstone (Woody's band, Maynard's band, and a funk group called New York Mary) and some Gerry Mulligan

I KNEW you wouldn't let me down, Paul!
  16. So I'm listening to Bye Bye Blackbird from Miles Davis All-Stars Live in 1958-59, and in his first chorus of blowing, he quotes "Maria" from West Side Story. At length. Twice. Seems very un-Miles-ish. I can't think of him doing much in the way of quoting other tunes in his solos. Anyone have any insight as to what was going on in that show? Any other examples of Miles doing some quoting? Check out this exerpt. http://files.me.com/...stur/w8076x.mp3
  17. Sounds tasty! We had burgers from the grill with Tillamook cheddar and brie. Sauteed mushrooms and onions. Baked sweet potato fries. And vodka.
  18. I generally care for this kind of thing...and this is pretty genius!
  19. That's great news, Chuck! Will look forward to the release.
  20. Last year a trio of Native American jazz musicians here in ABQ put together some performances, calling the group "Red Hot and Red". However, the material was straight ahead jazz with some afro-cuban stuff. I didn't catch any of their performances, so I don't know if there was any apparent Native elements in the music itself. Read a short article about the group.
  21. I had the opportunity to play many times with Eddie in the Jazz Members big band. It was a real education to hear Eddie blow on those Basie and Ellington charts. He was the real deal, and it came through in everything he played. Very sweet and humble guy. R.I.P., Eddie and thanks for the great music.
  22. Montana gave the New Mexico Lobos a run for their money! Saturday UNM (3 seed) goes up against Washington (11 seed). Fingers crossed...
  23. Uhh....wow! I couldn't make it through the first one. The second one was kinda catchy!
