    Linn Halliday

I remember Linn Halliday as a fixture at the Get Me High when I lived in Chicago for a few years in the '90s, but I never knew much about him, other than enjoying hearing him play. Swingin' and very straight ahead. Not much came up from a quick google search, but it appears that he died ca. 2004. Does anyone here remember much about Linn? His background, etc? I heard stories about him being offered a gig with Miles, but never got much confirmation.

  3. I seem to recall another episode like this being mentioned here a few weeks ago. Might even have been the same Cannonball/smooth guitar mix-up.
  4. I am getting a new Ipod this week so I decided to give the Etymotic (6i) a try another friend recommended these also I was not sure if the in the ear format was the best way to go but for the gym and in the car it makes sense for me Wise choice. Nothing out there matches these[at their price level, that is]. I got a pair of these for my iPod and am very happy with 'em. I also got the HeadRoom AirHead amp for more extended listening. Didn't necessarily help the sound a whole lot, BUT it does have a "crossfade" feature that softens or blends the stereo separation, which can otherwise be fatiguing.
  5. Thanks for the recs. on the Kubik, Levine and Pierson books. I'm curious: Do any of those books (or others you might recommend) address the earliest examples of africans using marching brass instruments?
  6. After listening to some of the samples of the rural brass stuff at the CD Universe site, something occurred to me: Given AllenLowe's observations on the Dexter thread, could it be that these guys actually thought they were playing "Cheesecake", but they were just really, really high?
  7. This has been a fun thread to read. I would like to extend my personal thanks to Allen for not being the biggest LTD fan. He sold a couple of Black Lion sides to me a few weeks ago, and I have been digging them quite a bit!

  13. Playing a gig at one of the casinos in the area. It's a Motown/Soul revue with a group of guys doing 4Tops/Temptations/Spinners stuff, a guy doing a Stevie Wonder set, and a female singer doing Aretha and Tina Turner stuff. The show should be kinda fun, but the rehearsal today was BRUTAL! Then, I'll have to dodge the drunk drivers on my way home. I swore off NYE gigs for several years, but took this one 'cause they made it worth my while. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!
  14. ...also if possible, I'd like to stay under $100. Any suggestions?

  16. I'm interested in getting some wireless headphones (I like the idea of doing more headphone listening, but don't want to be tethered to sitting right in front of my stereo). Sennheiser seems to have the most models at a variety of prices. Do they work OK? Do they suffer much from interference from cordless phones, wireless internet, TV, etc? Are the differences between the models primarily ones of audio quality or of signal clarity? Other brands/models to recommend? Thanks!

  20. I remember Bobby Shew playing some tape from that session for me quite a few years ago ('90 or '91?). Seems he put the session together and was very happy with it, and had a difficult time shopping it to labels. From my vague recollection sounded like some great playing. I'll have to track this one down! Other Tom Harrell: I've always liked a Bob Berg album called New Birth from around 1978. Harrell just burns on the whole thing!
  21. I've heard that the broadcasts will now feature the music of Woody Shah!
