  1. Paul, you and I have talked a little about this already, but I'll add that I feel for you, man! I know that things will work out for you, even if there are times when it doesn't feel like that's ever going to happen. I also know what it's like to get kind of blindsided. I got hit a few years ago when my (ex)wife finally decided that our marriage was cutting into her time with her boyfriend! Pretty dark times followed, but after weathering the storm, things did indeed get better. So hang in there, and know that there are a lot of folks on this board, and elsewhere, who are here for you and happy to talk about it any time.
  2. Just to be clear, this festival was a series of individual concerts over a two-week span. Those headliners (McCoy, Branford, O'Farrill etc.) each had their own night a theatre in Santa Fe that seats about 800. So, several sold-out (or almost) concerts. In addition, there were other shows connected with the festival, at the Outpost (in ABQ) and at an outdoor amphitheatre (also in ABQ) that seats up to 800. Yeah, it may not be Newport '58, but it's a great thing for our music community.
  3. Sadly, I was out of town for all of the New Mexico Jazz Festival events! But I'm pretty thankful that we have some jazz presenters here in the desert; especially here in ABQ where we have the Outpost Performance Space. The guy who runs this non-profit (on purpose ) place is an avant garde saxophonist with very eclectic tastes. He books straight ahead, avant, performance art, all kinds of stuff. The venue holds about 200, theatre style, no talking, no smoking, no booze. It's also a great venue for us local guys to get a chance to do something a little more than the typical club/restaurant gigs of which there are a good amount here. But in keeping with the spirit of this thread, Yeah! Everything Sucks!!!
  4. Steve Swallow Robin Eubanks Walter Pidgeon
  5. As I understand it, these are new tracks recorded by the current band, that were put underneath some vocal tracks recorded earlier by Brother Ray. I'm more than a little dubious, but guys on the band whom I've talked to are excited about how well it all came out.
  6. Lacey Underall Steve Lacy Lucy Van Pelt
  7. I like a slice of orange with this one: And sometimes a lime with my Mexi-beer (not with Negra Modelo!).
  8. I worked in a wedding band (also in the D/FW area) and the leader had a meeting at the office of the father of the bride. Father starts the meeting by saying, "Well, me and mah family don't take much to music, so it's prob'ly best if y'all just handle it..." And "handle it" we did.
  9. Don't sell yourself short, Jim. I've always had the impression that you are a very principled whore.
  10. Professor Klump Buddy Love Stella Purdy
  11. Aznable, Char Nat Cole Carl Maria von Weber
  12. Another big "thumbs up" for this CD as well. Really showcases Bobby and what he was all about. Also, the recording he did with Frank Wess and Tootsie Bean is a killer. Which album was that SS? MG It's called "Going Wess"...you can get it on Amazon. Thanks very much SS. Now on order; $3 cheaper at CDUniverse. MG Going Wess is also available on emusic.com ($2.20 if you have the larger subscription ) Hopefully the loss of these unsung heroes helps us to appreciate the cats who are still with us.
  13. R.I.P. I remember a classic Tonight Show moment: Johnny and a guest were discussing whether to pronounce the word, PEE-anist or pe-ANN-ist. Johnny turns to the band and asks Ross. Ross says, "It depends on how good you are." big laugh. Then Johnny comes over the top with, "Ladies and Gentlemen, Ross Tompkins, our PIANO PLAYER." makes all that Leno-Eubanks stuff seem even weaker...
  14. I'm right there with you, my friend. I haven't yet had a chance to pick up the remixes mentioned on this thread, but my interest is definitely piqued.
  15. Who said anything about "serious"?
  16. Which EW&F did you get? Undergroove Collection, or one of the others? Anyone heard the J5 volume 2?
  17. Pat Harrington Pat Cooper Vincent Gardenia
  18. I don't know if he posts here, but I'm pretty sure Stanley Crouch is the only person qualified to comment on this topic with any credibility...
  19. "Day-twah. That's Indian for 'Detroit'."
  20. I'm with you, Chewy. I don't care what the music sounds like, as long as it was recorded in the correct city. All those Beethoven sides that George Solti did with the Chicago Symphony? No way. If it wasn't recorded in Berlin, it's not Beethoven. And the Beach Boys? I know that MOST of their sessions weren't really recorded on the beach. WTF? And don't even get me started on the Clark Terry and Monk record "In Orbit." Yeah, right!
