No. Is she naked in it? I hear she was. Quick Google search seems to indicate that there was some talk/rumors about Roseanne making a seven-figure deal for a nude pictorial, but it doesn't look like it ever came to fruition. She was interviewed (along with Tom Arnold) for the June '93 issue, which featured Playmate of the Year...wait for it... Anna-Nicole Smith.

Reminds me of a D/FW wedding band I played in. The bandleader scheduled a meeting with the father of the bride; met him in some tall office building in downtown Ft. Worth. After fielding a couple of questions about what kind of music he envisioned at his daughter's big event, the dad finally said, "Look, me and my family don't take much to music, so I'll just let you decide all that." End of meeting.

There's a non-music-related discussion forum I visit occasionally, and on a thread called "What kind of music do you listen to?" there were a lot of answers like "...just about anything except jazz."

No kidding! I just gave a listen to the whole disc, and I feel like I been beat up! It's just full throttle, non-stop (even the ballads, like "'Round Midnight"). Afterward, I put on Jimmy Heath's Turn Up The Heath to cleanse the palate. Swingin', ballsy writing and playing, but not nearly as rough around the edges as Tolliver's thing. About bleeding ears, I moved on yesterday to "'Round Midnight" and the next track, and suddenly felt (though this may be nuts on my part) that the harsh way this is recorded (and the harshness is in Tolliver's writing as well) is the perfect analogue to how angry I feel when I read the newspapers these days. It's like an "Ode To Rove and Gonzales." Hey, that could be quite the marketing strategy: "Charles Tolliver and his Big Band: The Soundtrack to our Lives!" Could be even better for BlueNote's bottom line than that whole Norah Jones thing!

was that david sanford and the pittsburgh collective? Sorry for the late reply. No, it was Tolliver and his band. I was just doing some spring cleaning in my home office and came upon my still-sealed copy of the CD. I'll have to give it a spin tonite...

Old enough that the studios were using DAT machines, and the slimy A&R guy was saying to the unsigned band, "Remember that great gig I saw you at in '85? Didn't we have a blast." I'm guessing that, while the differences in how music (especially rock/pop music) is distributed and disseminated now versus then are huge, there are still plenty of young bands getting screwed by "the man."

Now he's out, because the D.C. radio station Hot 99.5 covered over $19K in back child support and fines. In exchange, BB will be an employee of the radio station for one week (good gig!). Story Here

Congrats, Pauly!!!! No one is more deserving of a gig like that than you! Here's to making a very positive move! I hope you do make it to the great Southwest later this spring like we talked about. It would be fun to celebrate with you in person.

I don't know anything about the town, but a good friend of mine- fine saxophonist, Will Campbell recently took a teaching job at UNC-Charlotte, leading the jazz program there. I'm guessing he would know if there's anything happening around town.

That's kinda deep... Seriously. I can imagine that sort of internal monologue spinning in the minds of many famous types who get "saddled" with celebrity. Michael Ian Black shows up a lot on those VH-1 shows, "I Love the '70s ('80s, '90s)" as one of the talking heads who makes snarky comments on various fads, etc. I think he was also a contender to take over the Late, Late Show (on after Letterman) on CBS. I get the impression he's a fairly dark cat, but also pretty funny, IMHO.

Wow! I had never heard about JMcN's physical maladies. I'd be interested to hear that new band. I've been in awe of The Shaggs for years. I have a hard time wrapping my brain around the idea of working with that stuff in an instrumental jazz setting.

A new compilation, from what I've heard... I'd be very surprised to see a new studio album. More like a new box set, according to some supposedly good sources. Also (supposedly), it will include a quite a bit of previously unreleased material, though what that might consist of... (demos?? -- previously unreleased live material?? -- live-in-the-studio-run-thrus?? -- etc.) ...is a subject open to rampant speculation. Unfortunately the one track-list that's been circulating is just a bunch of previously released remixes of Police tunes, plus a repackaging of the live double-CD -- so I'm completely inclined NOT to believe it (and suspect it's not at all real). But there is supposed to be some sort of new Police box coming (by Xmas? - wild guess), FWIW. Coming out on the new Mosaic PostPunkPop label?

Anyone remember that Chet Baker film "Let's Get Lost"? There were a bunch of scenes of Chet hanging out with a young group of sycophants, including Flea (bass player of the Peppers). It was a really weird thing; like they were digging him 'cause he was Chet, but also kinda messing with him, like he was just a crazy old homeless dude. And then there was Flea, sitting with Chet in a booth at a restaurant, in Chet's face, trying to convince him that he really was "into" jazz, and trying to get Chet to sing tunes with him.

Several years ago Charlie Parker's plastic Grafton alto sax was being auctioned at Christie's in London (ended up going for $140K+), and is some video of Pete King playing some nice bop on the horn. Part way through the video there is some nice backlighting on the horn, giving it a cool looking translucent glow. Yeah, the whole thing smacks faintly of necrophilia, but intriguing nonetheless.

First bone soloist was Phil Wilson. Didn't catch the name of the second guy with the glasses and the funky stance.

Nice clip, but GODDDDDDDDAAAAAAMMMMMMM!!!!!!! No shit! The only thing that could've taken it really over the top would have been an appearance by the Treniers for the "big finish"!
