  1. they sound really great.
  2. Randy are you using Aquarian heads on that kit like Jack?
  3. Katche is a great drummer that writes interesting tunes.
  4. happy birthday Herbie!
  5. Because when it was too late or groups were too large, RVG recorded at Manhattan Towers.
  6. isn't it great the telepathy between Randy and Jim on his first few bars soloing on "Senor Buffet?" Randy just finishes the phrase for him.
  7. Joe has a great solo on "Senor Buffet"
  8. Those of us who are Patheads, know the article details are nothing new.. but this really is a unique idea and one that works well musically. The title track and "Expansion" is among Pat's best writing ever. I want to see this in NYC the final night of the tour.
  9. There was a printing error in the booklets (pages out of order) so I don't think they have gone out yet. I haven't received mine yet.
  10. I think this album is pretty decent actually. I also found no audible evidence of Philly Joe Jones' drumming being not up to par re: Blumenthal's comments.
  11. Cha Cha J is an oddity in that we hear JOS solo on piano. The "Cherokee" session was supposed to be a piano trio but it was unsuccessful, so he switched to B3 as usual.
  12. That's really interesting! I started studying Buddhism myself so that was neat to read about his spiritual journey.
  13. I think George is completely off to one side. I don't think he's like anyone or even any movement in jazz or other kind of music. MG I just listened to "The Bump" on Youtube, his playing is pretty interesting definitely.
  14. yes, McLaughlin. Frisell is great with tone colors. Those guys don't sound like rockers to me, sure rock influence but theres so many more influences mixed in, and they have unique takes on the harmonic and rhythmic vocabularies I think Kurt Rosenwinkel would make an interesting fit for Lonnie, even Pat Metheny, his playing is derived from bop, but he has a bop vocabulary all his own, mixed with the Americana and pop influences he loves. I've never heard George Freeman's playing though.
  15. I quite like them but I'm not greatly enamoured of Abercrombie's impressions of Hendrix. I think a different guitarist would have been more enjoyable for me. There's lots of Dr Lonnie that I greatly prefer. But props to Lonnie for doing this. MG Really? who do you think would have been better suited for the project? Scofield, Frissell maybe even Johnny Mac? Abercrombie is on fire on all three of them.
  16. anybody else besides Jim and myself like the Lonnie Smith titles?
  17. I have the three Lonnie Smith trio discs on MusicMasters that were leased from Venus and the strange thing is "Foxy Lady" is mastered a lot lower than "Purple Haze" and "Afro Blue". I really like the albums, but the organ seems mixed too far back into the right channel, well right of center on "Foxy Lady", and whenever Lonnie hits the preset for all stops out, the top end seems a little shrill.
  18. that last one is WRONG!
  19. "Prayer Meetin" sounds better in McMaster too.
  20. I hope we get official releases of the '67 Quintet shows in Europe.
  21. ooh! When is the first of the bootleg series coming out?
  22. He said it took 5 years for a craftsman to overhaul that bass? Talk about a guy who exhibits patience! yeah, that's incredible! I thought Bob doesn't play acoustic anymore due to back problems?
