just curious ep1strophy, who would you rate as players known for their inside work who do you think has excelled in free settings? I wouldrate Jack DeJohnette, Pat Metheny, Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Henderson to that list.
That's true, but as a kid I had a huge respect for the hard bop and bop tradition, my parents played that stuff growing up and I loved it. Maybe this kid heard straight ahead that really sucked, who knows. He's not old enough to have been around when all the young lion stuff was crammed down our throats.
Interesting post. I think the creator of that video, uses the fact he lacks technique to play something in a "free" context and prove anyone can do it. I think he'd be surprised to learn that even Brotzmann, one of his favs, listens to tons of inside stuff like, Hawk. Brotzmann often sounds to me like if Hawk was a free player, if you know what I mean, tone wise, at least.
exactly. I looked at the guy's profile he lists every interest to be "different" when he's like 20 million other ppl. Cuong Vu does what this person does a million times better. It's FRESH to him, not seasoned fans.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zARk737as8k isn't this guy getting it all wrong? The stuff he's playing has been around for 40 years too. Isn't it kind of crazy to say avant garde stuff is fresher than straight ahead because straight ahead guys play in a style created 40 years ago? So has this stuff.
Same here though I still collect a lot of artists I love, Blakey, Silver, Metheny, Corea, Hutcherson, Mehldau, DeJohnette, Garrett. I buy albums of various people where a configuration interests me, i.e. the new David Sanborn.
Binghamton is very boring. The jazz scene is local guys who play Real Book charts, and outside of the tragic American Civic Association shooting last year, not much happens here in way of violence. Mostly domestic issues in the poorer parts of Binghamton and Endicott.
Indeed. I heard them at SUNY Binghamton fall 1973. Very intense, wonderful music. As I recall, it was one continuous improvisation that was nearing 2 hours...when, in the lobby of the building, right outside the concert hall, there was a shooting (a murder!). The alarms sounded and the building was evacuated. As we stood outside the building, I heard one person say to another, "that was the only way that concert could have ended."
Really? a shooting? I'm a Bing alum from 2005. Sounds like it will be a cool set.
I bought a copy and am listening now. I agree with Jeff, I feel Holland's tunes with this band and quintet have this thing, very ostinato based, elements of funk, Latin, sort of winding harmonies. I guess the word is he's so consistent these days it's hard to find something that stands out.
