  1. The PS3 can run streaming video from your computer using a program called PS3 media server. I use the PS3 for games and streaming mostly.
  2. I personally feel Chick Corea is doing some of the best playing in these past 5-10 years or so of his career. "Forever" the acoustic RTF stuff, and the trio with Gomez and Motian were very very creative efforts. Paul Motian until his death was playing great, Pat Metheny is refining his style and his compositions are stronger and stronger, "Unity Band" is his best straight ahead effort in years. Joey DeFrancesco has become a more thoughtful player since JOS died, although I don't think (I haven't heard his last two) his albums have reached the peaks of "Organic Vibes" or "The Authorized Bootleg". Jack DeJohnette is still great, his taste and melodic thinking is better and better as is Steve Gadd. Michael Brecker's playing before his death was entering a new phase. On "Wide Angles" and "Pilgrimage", he was really pushing himself, finding fresher ideas beyond the usual Breckerisms. Actually to my ear, there are hardly any patented Breckerisms on his final album (there are a few) he was really in amazing form playing past his illness and finding new ideas. I agree on Branford definitely.
  3. Yeah, I noticed the "MG Blues" quote too, which is in turn from JOS' solo on "I Cover the Waterfront" I think.
  4. The Blue Note "Rainbow Series" cover art is some of the strangest I've ever seen. IDK if the series was trying to be ECM or Pete Turner ish in photo content but that LT series with the TV's on the cover of the Shorter is just weird. Weirder than his music .
  5. and Teddy Edwards! That's a fine, fine record. I agree. Since Verve owns Mercury (I think) it's surprising this never made it to CD. Jimmy's other Mercury albums are terrible. They are great for people who love funk and synths but for those of us that love JOS' organ playing "Its Necessary" and "Unfinished Business" aren't it.
  6. From the Miles Ahead website: New Miles Davis sets in preparation (5/20/2012) Sony is preparing two new sets for release in the fall. The first is another installment in the Miles Davis Bootleg Series, to appear in September 2012 -- this will be a three-CD, one-DVD set of live 1969 sets, including two concerts from Antibes on July 25 and July 26, plus pieces of two sets from Stockholm on November 5. The DVD will contain the November 7 performance at the Berlin Philharmonie. The second set is a reissue of the first eight Miles Davis Columbia LPs in mono -- 'Round About Midnight, Miles Ahead, Milestones, Jazz Track, Porgy and Bess, Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain, and Someday My Prince Will Come. The LPs will be pressed on 180-gram vinyl and will come in heavy facsimilies of the original covers. If this sounds vaguely familiar, you might be recalling Sony's 2010 box, Bob Dylan: The Original Mono Recordings (Columbia 88697 76105-1), which did for Dylan what the planned set will do for Davis. FINALLY! We get the Antibes sets officially! This set should be great. Another of one of my fav Miles periods.
  7. Damn, RIP. Was listening to "Miles From India", yesterday.
  8. The DVD is the Montreux show, and along with the CD you have the complete show. The Blu Ray is stunning. That and the PMG's "Way Up" are my two favorite blu ray discs.
  9. If you have "Returns" the double CD and blu ray or DVD, there was definitely a shift to really making something new with these tunes , really expanding on them nicely. "The Anthology" is great too, but RTF live is where it's at and looks like they'll be nice long versions on here. Good news is both CD's comprise the complete tour setlist for this new album.
  10. LOL! I was thinking of that with the album title.
  11. http://return2forever.com/mothership-returns/ Musically, no new material, but this is the touring lineup with Ponty, Gambale, Corea, Clarke and White. Track List Disc 1 1. Medieval Overture 2. Inside the Music (documentary) 2. After the Cosmic Rain (performance) 3. The Romantic Warrior (performance) 4. The Story of Return to Forever (sneak peek movie trailer)
  12. Yes. I would say the information in this post is what interests contemporary players these days. Not 'inside/outside' so much. I think ?uestlove has had a impact on younger jazz drummers even though he doesn't play jazz all that often, he's pretty encyclopedic. The influence of integrating drum machine like patterns into acoustic drum set playing has become a part of the expanding the language. Thats difficult for older jazz fans, who love Blakey, Philly Joe, Tony, Elvin and Jack to swallow; the whole drum machine thing is my generation and younger and easier to relate with. On Pat Metheny's forthcoming "Unity Band" album, Antonio Sanchez adds a drum n bass groove to "Signals" the debut of the Orchestrion improv Pat played each night on that tour, but in the case of the record, incorporating the live players into the mix. Its really really cool what Antonio plays on that track, but for people who like swinging, its not all that interesting.
  13. Harland really does something different in the age of post Tain drummers. Along with Terreon Gully and Chris Dave he brings the influence of hip hop drumming into jazz in a really fresh way, and he does play things that aren't often heard. After the SFJazz gig, my friend who is a jazz drummer and percussion teacher at Binghamton high school remarked to Eric he heard a new way of playing he's never heard from anyone. Been a big fan since he appeared on the title track of Kenny Garrett "Standard of Language". Harland's a great writer as his SF Jazz compositions show, and he's also a quirky, unique voice on his hip hop projects.
  14. Harland is a MONSTER. Saw him with the SF Jazz Collective. Great guy, talked to him after the show.
  15. I have it on both vinyl and CD. I have a soft spot for "Calling Miss Khadija". it is a great album!
  16. I was going to mention Potter, but I was trying to keep to saxophonists younger than 40. I thoroughly enjoy Potter, especially with his Underground group. I'm looking forward to hearing the Unity Band. Wait till you hear "Signals (Orchestrion Sketch)" It's GREAT. JazzFM in the UK played that track from Unity Band along with "Come and See". I've heard three tracks, running to the store on release day to get it. "Unity Band", b/c it is a Pat Metheny project and features the Orchestrion as an added texture, although there are Pat fans here, it may not be to everyone's taste.
  17. "Free For All" is ESSENTIAL. You don't want to be without it.
  18. Chris Potter, if you are not familiar, mrjazzman. Chris has some excellent albums out there like 1997's "Unspoken" with John Scofield, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette, "Lift" from 2004, "Follow the Red Line" from 2007. The latter, you may not like if you don't enjoy more modern touches from music in the past few years. Chris is excellent on "The Monterey Quartet" album, and he is now in Pat Metheny's "Unity Band", that album will release June 12.
  19. Mosaic was recorded in 1961, I think?
  20. Wasn't Chuck Brown's group where Ricky Wellman got his start?
  21. RIP
  22. I'll be able to replace the vinyl rip I found. I know Wounded Bird licenses tapes from Sony, but I'm surprised this isn't making its first appearance in the Complete Columbia Albums Collection, surprised they haven't done so for Freddie.
  23. My linkThis is the first tune off the record, I like it. It's an instant download ordering from Pat's site. The track is very "80/81" ish not suprisingly.
  24. oh wow! Will have to get this and the new Pat Metheny
