  1. GREAT album..... living with that one since 8 years old.
  2. Jack was great when I met him. He was understandably very tired after the gig.
  3. I saw Larry live years ago with a group of Indian musicians. It was very good and he was great to talk to.
  4. Was Joey on a B3 or the Numa organ?
  5. I listened to the samples which sound great, but especially since I'll be moving a few months from now $17.98 (even with a coupon) is too much for these when I have the 6 in RVG's/McMaster (Dolphy) and already know all this music. What are people's opinions if they've bought these?
  6. How could that be two discs if each tune is that long? ahh...... here we go. Interested in this also. CD 1 Personal Mountains (21:12) Innocence (10:48) So Tender (13:27) CD 2 Oasis (28:14) Chant Of The Soil (14:53) Prism (11:15) New Dance (7:07)
  7. Not tripling up on these titles again......... Not at that price.
  8. Gonna see them in October at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse. Cheaper than NYC at Town Hall. I love the album, one of Pat's best straight ahead projects.
  9. Really? It does have the Complete Blackhawk? Cool.
  10. IDK if the Miles complete Columbia set is totally worth it b/c you don't get things like the Complete Plugged Nickel, complete Blackhawk sets, the bonus tracks, the Europe '67 stuff, etc. I have a mix of the individual boxes and single Legacy/Legacy Edition releases for Miles' Columbia period.
  11. were these "Southgate Palace" live versions released on earlier CTI CD's or are they making their first appearance on the most recent US reissues? Earlier (2002) CD reissues.
  12. I think the gentleman has a point. There are a lot of festivals being called "jazz festivals" that have nothing to do with jazz. For example, the Syracuse Jazz Festival, saw a headline ad in Downbeat, not one act (including the "big" one Mr. Gorelick)was a jazz act. I think smooth jazz fools a lot of people into thinking those are "jazz festivals", which it seems that most festivals get their "jazz" content from. At least Montreux calls itself an International Music Festival now, although its still known as the Montreux Jazz Festival, I think the jazz content shrinks to about 3 days each year, right?
  13. Keith Jarrett does sexual activity with his Steinway!
  14. In the booklet that comes with the set, Stanley offers thanks to L. Ron. I just assumed that meant that he is a scientologist. He is. He resumed practicing. But yes this music is fun and well engineered.
  15. Stanley had left that church I thought, but I guess he had reconciled with that belief system. I agree with you that Al can be tasteful, I feel sometimes, with all the technology he uses at times like the Roland pick up on the acoustic, unlike Metheny, when he uses things like that I don't know if the musical goal for me is all that clear. The only Al I really enjoy is with RTF.
  16. Yeah, the Elektric Band stuff is hit or miss, the Montreux 2004 DVD the best part is the second half. I never really liked the Acoustik band stuff much except "Live from Blue Note Tokyo is great, as is the DVD from Chick's 60th Birthday celebration. I think what Gambale does in RTF is very tasteful, because it's easy in a band like this, even as these guys are older, to go overboard with the chops, and I think Dimeola tried to assert his dominance a bit more than Chick and those guys would like and that's why he was axed. For a guy that wanted the RTF reunion so bad, he sure bad mouthed everyone after the tour. But that's Al, lol. I appreciate with all thye downloads, the package they put together.
  17. I think its one of the best mixed things I've heard in a long time soundwise, but I think what they do with the well worn tunes is great. Chick is really following Miles' idea of opening things up improvisationally in a different way each time, I mean the "Senor Blues" bit had me laughing so so hard. "Dayride" from Montreux is a bonus track on the Japanese edition, but I'm glad we have the full show from (I think) Austin Texas on the album. This might be controversial for some fans but Gambale is a better fit for that music than Al was b/c he plays with more feeling and less machine driven chops..... JLP is a great addition, and I think this and "Returns" are both valuable documents. I prefer this album over the studio stuff, honestly.
  18. Received it yesterday, GREAT album
  19. The new RTF should be on its way for my birthday. John Kelman at AAJ put that one over the RTF: Returns from 2008.
  20. Welcome! Yeah, that lick is sort of iconic in squabbling, I wonder how it got to that point? Thats not one of JOS' most famous tunes I don't think, and I've studied JOS as a fan inside and out.
  21. That is interesting. Thank you!
  22. That's true Bags broadened his scope, even doing some of those LA slick sessions on Pablo in the 80's. My favorite later Milt has to be "Cherry", "Montreux '77", the albums with Ray Brown in Japan and at Ronnie Scott's (London Bride/Mostly Duke/Memories of Thelonious Sphere Monk) I thought the Very Tall Band reunion was good also.
  23. Brecker had more records planned after the completion of "Pilgrimage". Of course Clark Terry was playing great until his health issues, Stanley Turrentine, Milt Jackson never lost it. Kenny Burrell has gotten better too. "Tales from the Hudson" is a great record, though my favorites are his self titled and "Pilgrimage". Sonny Rollins, Wayne, Ornette. Someone had mentioned Roy Hargrove, I think he reached his maturity when he recorded "Crisol". Latest thing I have with him is 10 years old "Directions in Music: Live at Massey Hall". Kenny Garrett's playing has gotten more intense as he's older.
