  1. Thanks Jim and Marcello. Right, I remember Jefferson passed in an emergency procedure. Boyd I don't recall much about other than being a solid player, and very good to hear that Dukes had renewed his association with McDuff in the 90's. Surprised he wasn't on McDuff's Concord dates.
  2. One of those cases where you wonder what the players ended up doing. My friend asked me what happened to the great Joe Dukes, b/c it seems at least after Lonnie Smith's "Live at the Club Mozambique" he didn't appear on many sessions. Maybe it's similr to the case of (I realize these are all organ group references) Eddie McFadden who after the 70's seemed to stay local on the Philly scene. Or players who dissapeared entirely like Johnnie Splawn, Dewey Johnson (on "Ascension") or Donald Rafael Garrett, did he leave music after playing with Trane? Other players I wonder about, Carter Jefferson after Woody Shaw, Manny Boyd after Hutcherson's group, etc.
  3. RIP. "Live at Carnegie Hall" is wonderful
  4. Man, Savion with Roy and Jack in separate improvisations seems enough to warrant a buy for me at some point. I'm surprised GA that you feel both men and Savion seemed at opposites. Both were tap dancers at some point but Roy's rhythms are so tap dance like, an extension of his body.
  5. I'm thinking of doing the same Jetman. How's is the sound? The last Wounded Bird reissues I bought were the Woody Shaw and Griffith Park Elektra Musician titles and they sounded fine to my ears. I've heard about the Joe Farrell CTI titles on Wounded Bird being compressed and less than good sounding. To me it seems like the Montreux Summit, Blue Montreux, and Casino Lights titles were all like cousins of the CTI All Star concerts, but with less consistent music. Rick Braun and Boney James marred the individual tracks sans the group jams on "Casino Lights '99" (a title I bought for Kenny Garrett) a very weak stand in for the Hubbard/Turrentine combo they seemed to try to emulate. It seems what I've heard of the Montreux Summit on the Dexter box is pretty successful with the unusual combinations. Though with Wounded Bird, I should grab those titles and Freddie's "Gleam" b/c their reissues go OOP rather quick.
  6. Bringing this up b/c "Montreux Summit" vol 1&2 have just been reissued by Wounded Bird. Since 3 cuts, probably the best of them are on Dexter's Columbia box, is there any need for me to pick up these albums or not really?
  7. LOL! to trigger the Orchestrion too
  8. I ordered the Hutcherson Live at Montreux from a Japanese seller on eBay, came out to $19.80 total, now that Amazon on demand CDR copy will be backup. Will be nice to have a legit factory pressed copy. I went to Dusty Groove to try to get it but it was sold out, not a surprise. They have the Ronnie Foster and Bobbi Humphrey Montreux titles but those aren't worth getting to me, I sampled a tune from each on youtube a while back, and they didn't really grab me.
  9. I think Chick still has plugins or other ways of doing ring modulation effects though he doesn't use them much now. He plays his own sampled Rhodes on a Yamaha Motif these days, because it's easier portability, I thjink he said in an interview he was worried about his Rhodes from the 80's going out of tune.
  10. Yes, I have one of the sets on CDR from the 25th, and the setlist is mostly familiar tunes from the Second Quintet era, but as stated above, played rather differently, and pretty free
  11. I'm watching a Tony Williams Quintet performance from the Mt. Fuji Jazz Fest in 1989, and Braden replaces Bill Pierce. Did Braden replace Pierce on much of the '89 tour or just that gig in Japan?
  12. Prayers to Marcus and his band!
  13. If there was more stuff like the second half of "Components" in your dream, that would have been wonderful!!
  14. Thanks Hans. Did the estate sign off on it?
  15. I don't think so. What grey label release is it this time? Dragon's 4 CD issue of the Stockholm concerts is legit, but I think the only "legit" bootleg releases of Miles we'll be seeing for thje time being is Sony's series. After the 1969 set I don't see them going backwards, but maybe something from the Pangaea/Aghartha band.
  16. I haven't checked out any releases on Smalls records but hear their excellent.
  17. I have the ECM Touchstones "Special Edition", so I would like to have the other albums in the set so I will probably get it at some point. It would be time Abercrombie's "M" gets released on CD. I heard some of it almost 10 years ago.
  18. RIP. Was listening to "Page One" the other day
  19. yeah, socks are cool
  20. I'd say after those photos Jim, that the cover of the forthcoming set, the photo is of that vintage, with the hairline and all.
  21. If we could see the shirt, maybe...
  22. I like the cover!
  23. A great set. "Oh Baby!" and "Understanding" are my favorite albums from the set.
  24. Winwood is a great musician. One of the highlights of Santana's "Hymns For Peace" DVD/Blu Ray is his version of "Why Can't We Live Together".
  25. Me too, eventually!
