Miles Davis - Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel CD set
CJ Shearn replied to bebopbob's topic in Offering and Looking For...
$800 seems crazy unless a mega collector buys it. So $200 seems to be around the norm. I gotta sell some things and I'm avoiding music stuff if I can, mostly DVD's I no longer watch. The Plugged Nickel set is not in heavy rotation, but that music is so great, parting with it would be a huge regret -
Miles Davis - Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel CD set

What's considered a reasonable sale on this set? Not that I'd give mine up, but it could help fund a trip to Japan. -
I would say try to find some of the double albums like "Whisper Not" second hand because ECM doubles are expensive. I paid $40 for Metheny's "80/81" and "Travels" years ago to name a few. Has anyone heard HDTracks 24/96 d/l of "Somewhere" and compared it to the CD? The remarkable thing is although the disc is more compressed than other Jarrett's it retains a fair amount of dynamics, and is rich with detail, in the bass, piano, drums. How they can do all of that w/o peak distortion, IDK.

Yes! great.

This might bother etherbored ;-), but CraigP, if you only want 1 or 2 Standards Trio records, it's this one and "Still Live". In my 10 years of listening/buying the trio records my top picks in addition to those would be "Inside Out", "Whisper Not", "Changeless", "Up For It" and "My Foolish Heart", the "Standards I/II" and "Live in Japan '93/96" (containing the complete Tokyo '96 concert) DVD sets. The much discussed "At the Deer Head Inn" is a much looser, jam session really, better appreciated once you know the other trio dates.

Right, etherbored. Peacock offers a contrasting voice, and he does come out of the Lafaro tradition, simultaneous laying down a bottom and being one of three equal voices. The trio comes out of both the Jamal and Evans model, but I find that Gary serves as a strong harmonic and rhythmic guide while Keith and Jack are freely interacting. When they lock into the vamps as on "Somewhere" Peacock completely keeps it grooving, and "Deep Space/Solar" represents a growth in the trio's approach because, Jarrett's more recent use of his left hand for counterpoint is playing a big factor, and he can intergrate the "new" Jarrett with his old approach. On that opening tune I love how they are pretty abstract with referencing the tune, you know it's "Solar" but the interplay is completely free flowing, at first you think Gary will solo, but it naturally opens up into a three way dialogue quite different than how Keith's approached the tune in the past. They never reference the head after the beginning and it resolves itself quite beautifully. I agree completely with you Lon. To my ear, Peacock's soloing in the group is much more harmonic in nature, it's less about melodic lines (though they are there) and exploring the shapes of the tunes harmonically.

I have some reference for Evans extended techniques having heard Cuong Vu, but actually there was one video I saw of Evans a few years ago, I couldn't stop laughing. It was a solo thing, and just the sounds coming out of the horn were hilarious. I did see video of him playing a few standards and he really redefined what those could be, for sure.

Same...... A Wayne set? When? Mosaic?

Kenny Burrell - Special Requests (And Other Favorites)
CJ Shearn replied to mjzee's topic in New Releases
They don't distribute widely enough, I guess. They are a class act though, the releases I do have. -
Strange cover for a High Note release! Like a Blue Note LT cover with ECM style text.
-
Well, I received the disc as a birthday present from friends and they absolutely go there on the title track, it's wonderful. Keith has done "Solar" so many times ("Tribute" is on it's way to me) but this version I really like for the implied swing, and between 2001 and 2009, the trio matured to an even more symbiotic relationship on this album. I understand why John Kelman at AAJ considers this his favorite next to "Still Live", in a single album it truly represents what this group has been about, it distills the standards, ballads, wholly improvised approach all into one place.

Kenny Burrell - Special Requests (And Other Favorites)

Cool. KB gets so much better with age it seems, so consistent it's amazing. I still haven't gotten around to picking up "Be Yourself" or that solo album yet. -
I always hear Mauro Ranallo, former commentator for mixed martial arts on Showtime and now Showtime Championship Boxing say "the penultimate round".
-
I listened to "Roll Call" yesterday, what a nice album.
-
I listened to "Rio" again yesterday, a fabulous album.
-
Is Ozzy's voice autotuned like mad on that? I hope they at least drench his voice in chorus or something.
-
I grew up with the "Montgomery Brothers in Canada" on reissue red vinyl, and it always sounded like a studio date to me with canned applause. Come on Concord, that makes no sense to add that to "SoAMuch Guitar" when its already available as another twofer
-
Great band!
-
The vamp of "Tributaries" IIRC gets pretty intense, but yes there are sections of that album that are very slow
-
I find it interesting that some people were dissapointed there was no free playing on "My Foolish Heart", but "Straight no Chaser" on there gets pretty free!
-
That's one of the discs I gave to the student who was a big Jarrett fan when I was a TA. I see I can get it for a decent second hand price though.
-
He does have a record collection that is quite impressive! He told me about it after one of the two times I saw him.
-
"Always Let Me Go" is a more fully fleshed out improv date than "Inside Out", there are sections that take a while to get going but you will enjoy it
-
Well, it's not entirely surprising because most Jarrett releases are of complete concerts. I wonder if that was a complete set, sounds like it.

There has to be way more from that Deerhead date. Knowing ECM it's doubtful we'll get that
