  1. That's true Hans, but you cpmpare "VSOP The Quintet" to "Tempest in the Colosseum" the quality is night and day. Maybe the source for the original "The Quintet" CD mastering wasn't that good.
  2. Will a remastered "The Quintet" VSOP disc sound better over the old CD? the recording quality for that one isn't that good.
  3. If you can find it you'll be well pleased. It's one of the few tribute discs I like (and that's less than 10)
  4. Since Herbie's Columbia box is coming, this is a excellent tribute disc. One of the cool things Beasley does is take "Maiden Voyage" but use the changes for "Tell Me a Bedtime Story", very hip.
  5. I have all the Columbia Herbie I need to including "Flood",. the VSOP and trio discs, but it might be worth it for a few of the acoustic/electric projects that were still great, that I don't have.
  6. Might be worth it just to have copies of "Five Stars", "Flood", and "Dedication".
  7. Absolutely.
  8. IDK, every video I've pulled up of him he plays pretty inside within the mainstream tradition. If you can suggest something more outside, that'd be wonderful. He's a strong player from the vids I watched.
  9. Dale Oehler according to wikipedia. I think he did work on some of the Bobby Hutcherson albums in the Select.
  10. I used to have the Chambers set but didn't love it ironically , the Tyner set I love, especially the session with Wayne on clarinet, and the "Asante" stuff.
  11. Did the Alzheimer's really set in from the late 90's till his death? He was still very sharp on the "Blue Note a Story of Modern Jazz Documentary". It's also sad how Horace Silver has been ravaged by Alzheimer's.
  12. Yes, it is amazing because it sheds light on a part of history and the will of people to survive and thrive. Also the way it draws on different spiritual traditions and showing the unity that can exist is great, I feel. Only person I think could come up with a record in this manner would be Terence Blanchard. I haven't heard magnetic but "Choices" was unique also.
  13. Listening now and this debut album from drummer Jaimeo Brown is stunning. Using sampled spirituals from the Gee Bend Alabama Quilters, Indian drones and vocals and electronics it creates a unique sonic world. Sometimes it happens in the course of the same tune but creating a oneness of seemingly disparate elements. If you don't like samples, electronics and ambient influences pass this album by, but for those with an open mind, check it out. One of the best I've heard this year along with "Tap", the Jarrett and Ed Simon discs.
  14. She is the lead trumpet I think in the horn section for "Street Dreams" by Lyle Mays.
  15. I find projects like Hemophiliac very interesting for the sound colors. Naked City for the mashups, and of course I love "Tap". I haven't heard a lot of Zorn, but enough to where certain projects really pique my interest.
  16. I love how hard he swung, when it was on, theres nothing like it, like on "Workout". Happy birthday Philly Joe. I also love the meeting of Bu, Philly and Roy on "Drums Around the Corner".
  17. He is so tough for hanging in there so sick. One of the greatest civil rights figures ever in history, Happy b-day mr. Mandela.
  18. I haven't heard the previous 2 Larry, but there are extended versions of a few tunes from those records.
  19. It's a great record, the rhythm section is so in tune (of course they would be since Pattitucci and Blade have been with Wayne for years) with each other and they really go wherever Simon takes the music.
  20. JOS really struggled, and I read one story where one jazz journalist found him indulging in cocaine in the bathroom at some point in the mid 90's. When he was hanging with Joey D. around the time they cut "Legacy", he seemed happy and healthy. Joey's companionship after Lola died really helped him.
  21. Just got this, and it's definitely going to make my top of 2013 list. Great record!
