  1. Interesting. I always thought that for the CD's the RVG's are meant to mimic that bright boom, I heard a sample of an original pressing of "Soul Stirrin" and was surprised how much the sound reminded me of the CD's.
  2. I'm a music lover and I've got a number of these audiophile 45rpm sets. The smallish number I have are largely sessions I'm particularly fond of and would like to get on vinyl in the best possible fidelity. These MM sets tick all these boxes although I've now slowed up purchasing them with none in the last year or so. Their downside is expense and bulk- they take up a lot of cash and shelf space. I don't think I'll be going for any of the 33rpm issues they're planning. I'm sure there are music lovers who have purchased Music Matters LPs. I've purchased a decent number of audiophile sets myself (though not Music Matters). I just think that these LPs are played up in the audiophile press whose audience tends to be equipment buffs rather than music lovers. In the end, I wonder how many people who purchase Music Matters 45s go on to buy and listen to music that's not presented in an audiophile manner. Yeah I don't read too many posts there (I lurk at Hoffman) where there's a real discussion on how good the music is, but mostly the merit of like Steve capturing the essence of Elvin's ride the way RVG never could, etc.... I just think hey in the course of RVG recordings, there is tape distortion, and other stuff. so it's probably really heavily noticed on those remasters with good equipment. Those sorts of things will always exist in the original recording, I noticed in the SHM CD of "Speak No Evil" tape delamination artifacts moreso than previous issues b/c it's so clear, but it seems like RVG used tape in the mid 60's where you really hear that. Did he use cheaper tape starting in the mid 60's. Anyway that SHM is great, I love it.
  3. Yes happy birthday Clark! So happy you are with us, a true warrior!
  4. Yes, anyone can participate.. certainly the bios we have up are for everyone, I'll get Miles, Bird, everyone else up in time, got a big list) so if you are a historian like myself and the rest of us, there is plenty of content for you too. When I get Monk's bio up for example, I will link directly to a bebop workshop we have, working on "Rhythm-a-ning" so people can benefit from analysis of a Tom Harrell solo on the tune, and how he applies both inside and outside playing according to harmonic structure.
  5. Yes, it's been around 5 years and they do a great job offering classes, and services to the area. My job is from home so I am not in the city, but being able to contribute my knowledge is wonderful.
  6. Thank you, been doing it since the end of November. The shameless self promotion is new
  7. Hey everyone, I just started writing for New York Jazz Workshop, and began bios and other info for newcomers. I'm writing the content so like one of Wayne's tunes it's never finished. I would appreciate feedback too! Anyone just exploring jazz, please let them know! http://www.newyorkjazzworkshop.com/essential-jazz-listening/
  8. Yes, I'd like to hear that too. The pairing seems odd because it was so many years since Tony played free like that, but it totally worked in the space of what was chosen for "Morgan's Motion".
  9. No, this is a like new copy of the 1995 set. Looking forward to it, I've already offered my mini LP (US version) of Giant Steps and Coltrane's Sound to friends gratis.
  10. I have a like new CD version of the set on the way to me as shamefully I've lacked most of his Atlantic recordings. I've heard of a few defects, should I be concerned?
  11. damn RIP. Should spin Concierto later
  12. Received my order today, "Empyrean Isles" and "Speak No Evil" sound excellent! Haven't gotten to "Out to Lunch" yet
  13. RIP to an astonishing human being
  14. I always felt the RVG of Empyrean Isles was too midrangy, that AM radio like quality. The Speak No Evil RVG is too bright for me, I never found the RVG's of the Adderley or "Juju" or the Monk titles to be an issue.
  15. I ordered Empyrean Isles, Out to Lunch and Speak No Evil.
  16. I guess no one found this funny?
  17. Hilarious http://youtu.be/2VB9scEbUCk
  18. Is there a free scene in Japan for Blue Note releases where they'd go for this? The BN releases in Japan are relatively conservative save for the BNLA series reissues. There would be more of a chance of John Zorn buying the tapes and issuing this on Tzadik, I'd think.
  19. Greg Tate contributes liners to the Miles Legacy Edition of Bitches Brew as well.
  20. Great great music, and how about that ride cymbal!!!??
  21. One for Eric is sublime on this excellent album. One for Eric is sublime on this excellent album. The best Special Edition album, IMO.......... although "Tin Can Alley" has nice material.
  22. Oh good. It does the other sets
