  1. I'm 33 for and my interest in new music increases, from the bevy of promos I have gotten and requested to review.
  2. This was my second "live" podcast, I am still working on refining my delivery (I sound too excited and nervous.......... and I won't be "singing" examples in future podcasts) but David's insights were great. Look for a review of the recent Cookers and his "When Words Fail" on my blog Jazz Views soon. http://bit.ly/1HLUYNO Jazz Views: http://blueceej.tumblr.com
  3. I caught a link to the Coleman piece from his twitter, I am still investigating his music, but the concept is interesting to me. "The Tao of Mad Phat" is a record I dig. Having also started my own blog with album reviews, in addition to my NYJW writing, I notice the difference between the big publications, and it's interesting to me.
  4. Terrible news
  5. Excellent article! Skimmed it, but reminds me of why I need to fill in some gaps, though I am more into what's going on in jazz now these days rather than buying tons of reissues of classic BN's. Babs Gonzales is a trip, really. I love that added intro of his on JOS' "Cool Blues", and the two singles he cut with JOS are interesting. I never understood why those two tracks weren't added to the '97 2 disc reissue of Smith's first 3 albums.
  6. Yeah, I have always wanted to hear those Freddie Roach titles.
  7. What?! wow.
  8. Me too!!!
  9. That makes some sense, although as I understand it, Spotify offers a "free with ads" tier whereas Tidal does not. I use/pay for both, Spotify for the family, Tidal for me My preference for Tidal is more around the look & feel, so maybe I'll make the move to "premium" from "HiFi". Having said that, can I tell the difference in sound quality between the two? Honestly I have never tried to compare the two under "serious listening conditions". My only commentary on the whole sound quality thing is that *occasionally* when I play music from iTunes to my stereo, I will have a reaction along the lines of "that sounds like crap". And, sure enough, when I check, it is an mp3. But that is probably on older mp3s and I have never really had that reaction using Spotify. FWIW, and I am sure I am in the significant minority, but I often use these services to "preview" something that I will later buy. But I think that is generational "have to own the physical copy" or maybe just stupid (i.e why?) Not stupid at all, Eric. I have adjusted to the joys of having both a physical and digital music collection. I have ripped my entire collection to the hard drive, and I pull everything up in the Windows Media Player library, which is great because it gets me to listen to albums I rarely do, and stuff I haven't heard in a long time. The CD's will always be there for back up and also documentation/packaging etc.
  10. The Fresu looks good. xybert I gotta disagree with you on GRP era Chick, some of it is hit or miss for me (the Akoustic band stuff is nice, but the production is too clean for me). I should have a soft spot for the Elektric Band from when I saw them live when I was 7 years old (I think I fell asleep, hehe) but that stuff even compared to RTF has not worn as well, in my opinion. Most GRP stuff does not stick for me at all, only a handful of albums (Brecker, Yellowjackets "Greenhouse") do. My friend loves GRP, especially when they were being distributed under Arista. We argue about that one He played me this "amazing" GRP track, it was a Dave Valentin thing "Clove and Cinnamon". I would never get something like that or even listen to it personally, but it was more of a "blowing" track then I expected. But it's what he digs, so I'm accepting, he does like a lot of other good jazz, we have definite differences when it comes to that stuff and UA era BN. (I am giving him the BN Live at the Roxy and BN Meets the LA Philharmonic CD's)
  11. Charles Lloyd: "Wild Man Suite" and Joe Lovano/Dave Douglas "Soundprints".
  12. It could be the tune is a head arrangement or something a bit more elaborate. Head arrangements at least from my understanding from having musician friends is that they are a bit more tricky then just blowing the melody to like, "All the Things You Are" b/c they are learned by memory/ear. And the drummer may need the music to make hits! Just a guess!!
  13. Wow, i was going to say in jest "aren't these the guys that do their own CDRs? If yes, where's the supply issue?" but didn't want to cast aspersions, especially as i couldn't remember if these were the guys. Dang. Wow....... not a way for customer service. I ordered from them when the Tzadik version of "Tap" was released, I had no problems, but that really sucks
  14. Wounded Bird doesn't usually have mastering credits on their discs, at least the handful I have,
  15. Cool, thanks for the tip. You are right the RVG's generally have a beefy quality, I remember someone describing them as "electric". I don't have anywhere near what you do system wise (I mainly use headphones-which you don't Audio Technica's which are totally flat, an Onkyo amp, Technics speakers and all my CD's ripped losslessly on my laptop), thank you always for your astute listening and comparisons, it really helps
  16. Ahh, I see. Thank you What do you mean by "quicker"? I've heard that term often.
  17. I sampled a tune on YT because I will get it on HDTracks or the SHM, and it didn't sound like your average RVG recording. Lon, what did you think of "Dialogue"? my only reference is the RVG I have, and I like it
  18. The CTI 40th series were all on Sony Masterworks with mastering by Mark Wilder and Maria Triana, no licensing deal. For example, I am looking at the back of Benson's "Body Talk" now, it says copyright 2011 Sony Music Entertainment and printed 1973, 2002 Sony Music Entertainment
  19. I was listening to some of the Frank Lowe by pure coincedence! My friend who played with Luther Thomas on quite a few occasions, sent me a link to some of Luther's stuff on YT and that record by Frank Lowe popped up after!
  20. Plays Bach, have fun with that one!!! That album was the subject of a LEGENDARY rant by our own Jim Sangrey, back in the days of the Blue Note board, I was like on the floor when I read that. I love Ron and give hm credit for always following his muse, but I heard a bit of that and it really didn't work for me. That is a great selection of Ron's albums though!, I always meant to dive into a few of his leader dates. I just have a couple of them. I really liked what I heard of "Dear Miles" a few years back but I never picked it up.
  21. Really really funny, cuz it's true! My musician friends talk about that always.
  22. I don't see how they could be the 40th anniversary issues, which were done by an independent company, nor the Wounded Bird issues. I would expect them to be the early 90's masters that came out on Columbia/Legacy. But they were all on Sony Masterworks, so isn't that kind of tied into the Legacy banner? For me the CTI 40th Anniversary series is the best series of domestic CTI discs I ever heard, some like "Red Clay" and "Straight Life" were greatly improved, others not as big, but I really enjoyed that series, others like "Don't Mess With Mr. T" sounded very close to the original vinyl.
