  2. Great discussion! I especially agree with epistrophy's points
  3. Sort of random, but one of the things with the Kendrick Lamar with the jazzier bits that is quite cool was Robert Glasper was saying in a YT interview the vibe they wanted was an 80's young lions thing, and that was cool the producer got where that was coming from. I don't always dig what Lamar is saying lyrically on that (checked it on Rhapsody a while back) but his ability to play different characters is astonishing.
  4. Very interesting story that Hubbard and Monk were in discussions to record before Monk's passing. Part 1 http://bit.ly/1ALhQfx Part 2 http://bit.ly/1dJcQ10
  5. Great story!!!
  6. The forthcoming Tony Kadleck, and Michael Gibbs with the NDR Big Band discs are pretty aggressive it seems to me.
  7. Oh wow, that's crazy. EAC would not work it's magic on the Joe Henderson track, nor "Ascension", despite both discs being mint. I actually edited out the skippy parts in the Henderson, so it sounds like if you didn't know the original recording, it sounds like a splice.
  8. He was a huge music fan, we just BS'ed about music. I think he joined our board 10 years ago maybe actually!
  9. So the Ornette and Trane sets have been reissued? Have the original editions of both, so no need to upgrade. Wanna get the Mingus set down the line, which was issued in 1997 when I was in my senior year of high school. That set is packaged like the reissues of the above mentioned Atlantic sets, right? I love both those sets, when I was in 8th grade the Trane box had come out, my guidance counselor was raving about it. For Christmas that year I got the old 16 disc Trane Prestige box, which I replaced with the three smaller sets.
  10. CJ, I really like A New Perspective as well, and the SHM-CD sounds better than the RVG. There's an interesting different perspective to this recording, to me it seems that you are supposed to feel you are listening from a pew. This doesn't come off that well on previous cd issues but does come off better in the SHM-CD mastering. I have the new one. It sounds pretty good! True, I understand that perspective (pun intended). the RVG is very "live" and in your face by comparison, I will get the HDTracks version to replace it someday, though I'll always keep the physical CD. Love the presentation RVG's had. The SHM's I have (just a few) sounded better than any previous version and are very transparent.
  11. Thanks Lon. Still have the RVG of "A New Perspective", there's so much new music I'm receiving as a reviewer that, I am not really upgrading the Blue Notes anymore. I've lived with "A New Perspective" since I was 8 years old when my mom bought me the really bad DMM LP back then. Those were atrocious, but man did I get exposed to great music.
  12. Wouldn't the "A New Perspective" remaster on HDTracks be identical to the SHM? same sources I thought.
  13. Interestingly enough, the new Dave Stryker disc I have been sent to review, "Messin' with Mr. T" (terrific disc BTW) has a defect in the entire first pressing (confirmed by his manager) where the last track, "Let it Go" will not rip or play without errors--digital clicking, in the last minute. I bought a digital copy of the last track which has no issues, and am waiting on a copy of the corrected pressing. Stryker is not happy about whatever fault caused the entire run of the first pressing to be naff. The disc ironically plays fine in the PS3 (which plays through everything!) as does the 2000 Impulse! reissue of "Ascension" which will not rip without error at the end of Edition II, and disc 7 of my copy of Joe Hen's "Milestone Years" which will not rip without error on "Power to the People". I think the "Ascension" disc violates red book standard some how, but I have plenty more 79+ minute discs that rip/play without error.
  14. His posts were always great at Jazzcorner as one of the more open minded folk there.
  15. Damn, I just saw this on twitter. HUGE loss, I loved his analysis' in liner notes and the Miles from India/Espanol projects. What I heard of the Sting project was great. Hopefully BN will reissue the Belden albums digitally soon. Though I have found them very cheap on eBay just now. That'll be for another time.
  16. RIP Bruce, huge loss.
  17. Marlboro is only a half hour from me. There is no wheelchair accessible transportation to get there at that hour
  18. Great interview! That's the level of interview I want to get to someday, that deep.
  19. I only drink unsweetened Almond milk these days, but it seems like a lot of skim milk is very like powdery, like dry milk. The growth hormones are not going.
  20. Happy birthday Mr. Jarrett. There is so much Standards trio out there, I am well satisfied with what I have, and there are probably years worth of archival releases. I got heavily into their thing 15 years ago. I have begun a deeper investigation of the solo albums. Glad there is the Italian Impulse reissue of the Impulse albums too, although the two sets from the late 90's are still around.
  21. the 6 CD set on Ebay for $35
  22. Happy birthday Mr. Peacock!!
  23. http://blueceej.tumblr.comI have written reviews of both albums. Very nice. And the microsite is nice!
