  1. Got a copy today after ordering one on eBay, and on a first listen I really enjoy the recording a lot. It's sort of everything that makes Dr. Lonnie so fun to listen to. "African Suite" is a bit strange with it's use of synth samples but very effective and shows he still is exploring as a musician. "In the Beginning" the previous recording, is almost up there for me with "Live at Club Mozambique", now Blue Note should sign Lou Donaldson and give him an album, yes we've heard his favorite sets to death live, but it'd be a nice gesture.
  2. This one is tough and unexpected to me because one of my very best friends just played with him on an album recently with Mercedes Figueras. My friend has been close with Gato's wife Laura as she goes to our church. So I never met them personally, but it feels kind of close.
  3. Yeah, I enjoy the DVD very much. May get the "Unity Sessions" blu at some point but am definitely getting the 2 CD release of all the music from the film. I will play the album probably far more than "Unity Band" and the "Kin" studio albums as great as they are. The music on the "Unity Sessions" took all that music from the 2 albums into another place, and that version of "(Go) Get It" is the best version Pat's released. The 12 string fretless with the grungy tone makes a huge different and he takes it out far more than he did on the "Trio 99-00" record or when he played it with Sanchez as a duet on the "Speaking of Now" tour which I saw in 2002.
  4. http://bit.ly/1Sye9iH We spoke about his new album with Cuong Vu's trio on May 6th, and his new quartet featuring Gwilym Simcock, Linda Oh and Antonio Sanchez
  5. I became interested in this after hearing Vijay Iyer talk about it. Great stuff! I sent my friend the YT link to "Third St.Stomp" and he hated it. It began a long discussion on my about why free jazz is not just random notes, because to him it's random. But he does like some other more melodic free stuff. Wish I still had Chick Corea's "Complete IS sessions" which I dug, and Anat Fort's "A Long Story" which I gave to my best friend b/c she loves piano like that.
  6. I had the Solal on LP as a child, I didn't realize it was a fake live date then.
  7. Cool, hope you enjoy it. I realize it may not be to everyone's taste, but I dig it quite a bit.
  8. I just reviewed the album yesterday, I like it quite a lot. http://bit.ly/1SbxUd6
  9. I'll buy a copy at some point I'm sure but there is also a lot of other music to deal with first
  10. True, I used to have that, wonderful session.
  11. Yes, yes! Some of my favorite playing of his, the Wayne Shorter and Joe Henderson influences are synthesized perfectly.
  12. Looking forward to this as well.
  13. Because Jack however briefly played with Bill, it's always fascinating to me how much the Evans connection comes out in the Jarrett trio stuff (though their own language in that dialect obviously). What's more interesting is the shared love KJ/Peacock/DeJohnette had for Ahmad Jamal.
  14. Cool! my birthday! Though I was not born yet
  15. Yes Lon, this does look interesting. I wonder if it'll have the missing bars on "Equinox" restored that are absent from the Heavyweight Champion set? Otherwise I love that set, it's indispensable.
  16. Absolutely! Brooks is doing the rolling triplet thing but it takes on a completely different character. "Zoltan" is very very intense on this, particularly Nathan Davis and Woody Shaw.
  17. I gotta give props to the above mentioned Joe Henderson and Kikuchi/Hino in concert, gotta listen to it more often, got it a few months back on eBay, but it's wonderful.
  18. I don't believe I have any promo channels to hook me up with Melissa's new disc. I'd imagine I'll probably get a promo from my friend at some point because WNYC gets loads.
  19. I really enjoyed this interview, the kind of musician to musician insight and Sonny's encouragement to Melissa are really cool.
  20. I love all the Henderson BN's and Milestone set, though for me the pick of that would be "Tetragon", "Live at the Lighthouse", "In Japan", and "Multiple"(the rhythm section of Larry Willis, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette is killer!). There's so much good, interesting music on the Milestone set, the only really weak thing compared to everything else is "Black Miracle", but it's not nearly as bad as some of the CTI's, Blue Note albums of that vintage (1976). Some fine Joe on "So Near , So Far", the aforementioned "State of the Tenor", and "Carnegie Hall Salutes the Jazz Masters".
  21. RIP, I was really shocked to hear the news.
  22. I love "Into Somethin" and "Unity" but I think that the music on the set eclipses those albums. Probably I think Jack Dieval's solos are the least compelling idea wise, but, the way Larry plays off and against his rhythms and the interplay they have on "La Valse Grise" and "Discotheque" is stunning. You'll love this music, Jim
  23. RIP, really shocking. I had no idea he was ill, I saw a video from a talk show in Brazil recently, he played great. Such a master of colorist, he really brought the Brazilian thing to the fore in Metheny's music that laid the foundation that remains in spurts to this day. His support behind Lyle Mays on Lyle's self titled is beautiful
