  1. "Live in Tokyo" is still my favorite WR album.
  2. Really great! swingiing, grooving like mad
  3. It's a great set, I used to have it, most of the tracks are on the second Columbia WR set, but for me, "Live and Unreleased" has been eclipsed by the "Legendary Live Tapes" 4 CD box. JMO tho
  4. Lon you were banned at AAJ? The forums that were always hairy for me were Jazz Central Station (yes, I joined jazz BBS's at 17 when I got my first PC) and Jazz Corner. The latter with the whole DEEP stuff, that was just insane, but I do think that if you spend too much time thinking about a forum in actual life, it's a problem. I'm a member of other forums for other interests I have, like shoryuken, a famous site for competitive fighting video games and some people take it way too serious, the keyboard warrior thing is at a premium on a site like sherdog, which covers mixed martial arts and boxing, that place I lurk but don't post. This board has been really great with the exception of the incident between me and Joel, there's a lot of people here with wide musical tastes which is great.
  5. And no more wacky stuff going on
  6. Damn, RIP..... huge loss
  7. The issue I have with the opinion is that jazz vocals must be locked into one thing, granted there are singers I've heard singing jazz that are just bad, Ken Greves comes immediately to mind, for example, I wouldn't buy Ms. Rios' albums either, but definitely an interesting entrance
  8. I don't agree with the original statement either, I think Thana Alexa, Gretchen Parlato, Beata Pater are all vocalists who challenge the OP's contention. I checked out Ms. Rios on YT, she has a wide range of material, from traditional ("Lover Man") to contemporary (Blackbyrds "Walking In Rhythm") but maybe starting a thread with such a statement is just discussion fodder? I don't think its the best way to introduce yourself on a forum either
  9. I quite like the meeting with Ornette on Volume 2, still gotta pick up 2 3 and 4, and hear the latter for the first time. I bought Volume 1 when it came out.
  10. Thanks. You'll hear me mention that clear Armstrong Okeh acetate that guy remastered last year, as well.
  11. Following on ghost of miles post, my interview with Mr. Wallarab from May 2016 http://bit.ly/2jjgTXz
  12. I will be posting a podcast real soon for New York Jazz Workshop I did with Brent Wallarab back in May that got lost in the shuffle when my mom died. Mr. Wallarab is all class and was a pleasure to talk to.
  13. Yeah, it still is bad........... the worst of journalism, really.
  14. RIP. I remember reading one of his more recent political writings recently, aside from scads of liner notes
  15. Almost bought Open Sesame and The Big Beat. Unless I am really unhappy with the sound of a previous edition I have slowed way way down on purchasing classic BN's, my attention is too tied to new music coming for review.
  16. Very cool.
  17. Really sucks. I enjoyed interacting with him on FB and I donated for his cancer treatment.
  18. RIP, so shocking

    Yes

I get the feeling "90125" is probably one of the least loved b/c of "Owner of A Lonely Heart", but "Changes" is a great tune. My friend got me onto it the past few years
  20. http://bit.ly/2hDxzZx
  21. Exactly! I.e. Thom Jurek always tries to impress the listener with how much he knows, his reviews I never take seriously. Thank you for the kind words everyone!
  22. Very great to see, and glad he's getting the chair at UCLA. You can never go wrong with Kenny, he was the first guitarist I heard as a kid besides George Benson. Always so tasty and reflective as a player, when I had the Fass debacle, he had mentioned that some of Kenny's early playing was "nervous", I never got or heard that at all, he mentioned "2 Guitars" as an example, but when I listened on YT I didn't hear that, early KB was quite fiery, but he always had taste. And that tone.
  23. Recently picked up the "People Time" box set and "At the Piano", fantastic, fantastic stuff.
