  1. Actually RDK, Pat doesn't mind his shows being taped as long as he doesn't see the red recording light, then he will self edit his playing.

    Art Taylor

I believe AT was a synthesis of the styles of Philly Joe and Blakey. I enjoy Jimmy Cobb as well, again I love the swing, actually I enjoy a lot of drummers who are just tasteful, and don't overload the proceedings. Another fav. of mine would be Grady Tate. Boy, what a touch he has! B-)
  3. I bet a trio release will hit when we're still reeling from "The Way Up", which I again say is the best PMG record ever released.

I dig Taylor's crisp, hard swing.
  5. thanks for the recommendations so far..........
  6. I saw this at Yourmusic for $23.96 or so, is it recommended? it contains the 4 CD's with Ray Brown and Herb Ellis recorded at the Blue Note in 1990.
  7. yep, Pat's created a style of his own. If he wasn't a giant of jazz today then why would luminaries like Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Dave Holland, Roy Haynes, Jack DeJohnette, Kenny Garrett, all have him on their records or concert projects?
  8. JK it might be worth saying that Pat has a tremendous love of Miles and Trane, especially Miles. "Four and More" was the record that got Pat into jazz. And before you cast any more distaste for Metheny, please check out his new album "The Way Up" on January 25th, it is a monumental work in his catalog.
  9. or howabout this one (from a city bus driver around here) "isn't Wynford Marsalis coming to the Forum?"
  10. "do you get high with that Methany guy?" "wasn't he the guitarist in Megadeth?"
  11. Cuong Vu uses delay and all sorts of weird effects, on his own and with the Pat Metheny Group.
  12. Earl Van Dyke? played organ on Fred Jackson's "Hootin and Tootin" (haven't heard the record tho)
  13. hey, I love the logo.
  14. LOL!
  15. is there a site that features the original LP art for Pablo albums? I have d/l and burned several Pablos, and have found a few of the original covers. But I really do not like the OJC redesigned covers for Pablo albums.
  16. I've heard the whole thing courtesy of the Amazon stream..... can't wait till the CD comes out, but this is truly the best thing they've ever made. B-)
  17. lets talk about "Live!" by McDuff for a second. Great record, but what a cheesy fake live recording. I d/l "Brother Jack Meets the Boss" on emusic and burned it but haven't listened to it yet.
  18. buh buh buh buh buh ba buh buh ba buh ((chik-chik-chik-chik)) comeon Joe, whip out your virtual guitar synthesizer!
  19. Jim, I only have "The Sermon" in addition to about 30 other Smith albums, Unity, McDuff's Live, Screamin' and the Patton Mosaic set. am I banned?
  20. how can anyone not love "Are You Going With Me?"
  21. My mom got me a CD/DVD combo burner, my best friend got me some anime, I also got "Cherokee" by Jimmy Smith, and I joined a d/l albums on emusic by Basie, McDuff, Hubbard, Benson and Tyner
  22. Jim, great comments about Jimmy Smith. I talked a bit about Jimmy when I was TA'ing the jazz course and played some of his music. The first time around, for whatever reason his sound got some laughs and ppl whispering to each other like, "what is this"? We also used the Burns doc, mainly for historical insight, we never considered it a comprehensive history by any means. Oh yeah, regarding the text we used for the class the Concise Guide to Jazz, by Mark Gridley, he only mentions Jimmy as selling a high number of records, stupid isn't it?
  23. actually the "trumpet" sound of the guitar synth is the Roland guitar synth, the GR300 not the Synclavier. Despite the Synclavier being put into a Roland guitar, Pat uses a saxophone sample on it. still does occassionally, but with a different device. I agree with Joe, Pat is a highly accessible guitarist, I do not like shredders like Dimeola, Holdsworth, Frank Zappa, etc.......
  24. Bev, I respect your opinions, but if you limit yourself to the guitar choices of Pat's, you are missing a whole bunch of great music, the guitars are merely additional colors.
