  1. I picked up Sonny Clark Trio then other day and actually just finished the album, it really knocks me out. Sonny's lines come out of that whole Bud/Horace/Wynton Kelly thing but they have personality all their own. The solo take of "I Remember April", I may be off the mark but I heard a little Bill Evans-esque stuff in there, anyone agree?
  2. yeah although I'm not a huge fan of super out stuff (prefer the fine line between inside and outside) theres just something different about Trane going out, its real.
  3. just listened to disc 1 again, and really the whole thing took me to another place. The playing and the energy is almost too much, my heart is still beating really fast as my whole body was getting into this music. What really does it for me is when Elvin and Trane are just going at it. After listening to clips of "Interstellar Space" that may be next, Coltrane's soul, the fact that are our bodies are not immortal are pouring through the horn.
  4. I find my attention wandering sometimes during the solos on these sides but its a challenge to really focus. I end up getting hooked in the end though, my whole body gets into the music.
  5. this set really opened my eyes. Not sure if I'll go for "OM", "Ascension" or "Live in Seattle" and "Live in Japan" just yet, but after a full listen to both discs it changed my perspective on really intense late Trane. Perhaps the Monk/Trane album opened me as well. I also bought "The Sonny Clark Trio" RVG (a Sonny kick started after listening to "Cool Struttin"' and the live boot of the Blue Note All Stars in Japan at the Mt. Fuji fest, 1986) , damn that'll be tough to listen to after the intensity of the Trane Half Note material.
  6. finished disc 1 and I am short of breath. That whole disc is like an endorphin rush, seriously. That solo, wow. The fadeout at the end of Afro Blue is kinda a shame but its a radio broadcast. But man.......................
  7. I will be picking up this set later today.
  8. IMO, Sonny has been one of those players that really transcends time, he still remains a force. Anyway, I don't think returning to the melody is a bad thing. It helps reconnect the song to the listener.
  9. well, I mostly listen to disc 1 10-14 and the whole of disc 2 which includes the At the Organ vol. 3 recently reissued as an RVG. The last six on disc one and the second disc really show his new conception IMO better than the first 9 tracks.
  10. which I'm sure other members around Pat drank, cuz we know he doesn't drink.
  11. thanks Rachel . "Double Guatemala" is just funny to me, because the tune is like so Pat in the way its contoured but so simple at the same time. What exactly is a Double Guatemala anyway? lol
  12. as for other guitarists, Pat Metheny does allow taping and trading of his shows just as long as he doesn't see the red recording light, then he'll sort of self edit.
  13. my DVD player has a slight pause between tracks and gets kind of annoying on live albums.
  14. I have a couple live gigs from this tour from Monterey and just the trio in Oakland. The Oakland show contains a version of Q&A that may top IMO the definitive version on the "Trio Live" record, Pat decides to skronk out halfway through and its funny. "Double Guatemala" cracks me up, Rachel, was that the guitar synth on that one with just the straight tone and distortion? David Sanchez doesn't have the fire that Brecker added with Pat but his tone reminds me of Joe Henderson, which I like.
  15. gotta pull this out again, bought it backn a few weeks ago. I love that montuno John and Grant get on "Latona".
  16. I've kept Live in Tokyo, and got tired of albums like Heavy Weather and Black Market. There are great tunes on those albums, but Live in Tokyo, which admittedly I have to be in a mood to listen to, is the hottest WR I've ever heard on record.
  17. thanks David. Hope Hub is playing well these days. I don't know how you feel about the subject but I got a copy of a live show from FM Radio of a Berlin Jazzfest with Freddie and Woody Shaw and Dizzy together, quite fun to listen to.
  18. sweet a live album coming.
  19. nah Porcy, he just wrote the lyrics.
  20. only Kenny G. I'd go see is Kenny Garrett the REAL Kenny G.
  21. CJ Shearn

    Bob James

aww I must have given Chuck a fever Seriously tho, "CTI Summer Jazz At the Hollywood Bowl" is one of my favorite albums, I grew up on it.
  22. yes Jim there is quite wild playing on the Mosaic box for sure I haven't listened to the first disc in ages.
  23. I also agree on Jimmy playing sheets of sound before Trane.
  24. interesting posts John and Jim. I don't have much to add other than each time I've listened to Wood, the consistency in the work is quite wonderful. BUT.......... Branford's rant which I read was really out of line. I enjoy quite a bit of Bran's music, but some of his opinions I feel have been laced with personal attacks, such as his account of Miles response to Wynton when he jumped uninvited on stage, citing Miles reaction as he knew his chops were shot and couldn't play anymore. And, Dr. George Butler, always thought what he did was a joke but the info on this thread definitely tells me that a lot of the crap music he produced was a result that he didn't know anything but cash money.
  25. thanks Jim. The JOS live boot I found of the same band except for BB and Zoot, his solo on "Walkin'" made my jaw drop. first time my jaw has dropped listening to JOS since "Legacy". I gotta get some more CD-R's so I can burn the Germany set........ A+ sound too.
