    Dewey Left Town!

did Joshua and his dad have a good relationship? from what I've gathered, no, but they made a record together right?

    Dewey Left Town!

RIP Dewey. only thing I have him on is Pat Metheny's "80/81".
  3. up. anyone else?
  4. he wrote most of the tunes on "Songbook", I like the energy of this new one overall, very intense soloing. I do hear some memorable things though a lot of stuff that will be standouts live. I hope the next KG record is live Paul, your views on this record are interesting and welcome. It shows how much different ppl interpret the same music. There are many melodies that strike me on this record, but also I think the emphasis of this record is more on blowing, rather than the composition+blowing aspect of "Standard of Language". One aspect I don't like of this new album, does anyone think it was recorded too hot? it doesn't sound as god as "Standard of Language" or "Pursuance".
  5. after a second listen, I have to disagree with Ratliff, I dig it. "Kiss to The Skies" I really like, the groove and melody, its sort of in the "Happy People" "Sing a Song of Song" vein, and "Realization" (Marching Towards the Light) I enjoy for the meditative trancelike quality, actually I want to find a translation for the chant sampled in it.
  6. I could not find the original thread on this, but anyway I picked it up last night. I gotta listen to it deeper, but so far "Calling" track number 1 kills, Pharoah sounds great on this. I also like the title cut, great solo by Mulgrew Miller who is under the piano, beneath the piano on top of the piano I also really like "Tsunami Song" really really pretty, and of course Booby plays great anyone else hear it yet?
  7. real late reply but true Kevin. On the domestic, theres a very annoying high hat reverb/delay thats nowhere to be found on the TOCJ, RVG sometimes had a weird reverb on the high hat, but in any event that is a great, great, record.
  8. no prob Dan. The album really sucks. When ppl are talking about how terrible "Night of the Cookers" is in another thread, BN Live at the Roxy really doesn't cook!
  9. my uncle made me a casette of this. In my mind, it is one of the worst Blue Note records to have been made. "T'aint Nobody's Bizness" is a Carmen McRae track, and Gene just plays a little Rhodes on the track "Blue Note '76" which is attributed to the "Blue Note All Stars". The only true all stars on that track are Bobby Hutcherson and Gene. Its not worth it.
  10. wow Brownie, that must have been incredible! I wonder if Klook solos on that cut, but it mostly sounds like Bu soloing.
  11. RIP Maynard. I missed my chance to see him locally a year and a half ago
  12. yes they are fun records Marcello, nice that Dusty Groove had the double CD at a good price. I knew that "Tunisia" had more than one drummer, b/c there was some ride cymbal stuff that didn't sound like Blakey. Oddly, the double CD does not list Gana M'bow or Klook at all. I can't read French, but their names aren't in the liners either, thanks again
  13. thanks Marcello!
  14. Happy b-day again to Wayne. Man, he looks fantastic at 73, still plays fantastic too
  15. this would be very interesting if this was unreleased live stuff. I'd be there too!
  16. I have the 2 CD French RCA set, catalog number ND 74897. On "A Night In Tunisia" disc 2, it appears there is an unlisted conga drummer, who is it? Usually the rest of the band members would play hand percussion and such on this tune, but the congas keep playing as everyone else plays their respective instruments. Is it Sabu? who was on almost all of Blakey's percussion sessions from that time. Also, does this 2 disc set (12 tunes in total) include all of the music from the original 3 LP French boxset? I gave to my friend the "Paris 1958" Bluebird compilation culled from these sessions when I got this set. Thanks in advance
  17. it'd be interesting to hear vibes through one because the rotation speeds of the motor in a vibraphone remind me of a Leslie.
  18. yes, yes, yes, Soulstream, it is a great album Actually I stumped a drummer friend of mine with "Expressions", he thought the drummer was Art Blakey lol.
  19. I have the DVD though to be honest I think their show a few weeks later at Montreux is even better!
  20. LOL. That is hilarious because I can't stand Malmsteen.
  21. ok Chewy very helpful for answering my question
  22. I was watching that Back to Basics special on MTV, I heard Dizzy's voice and I was like "whoa"
  23. if you don't want to plunk down the money for the Montreux box, "Live Around the World" is an excellent album to have covering the 80's early-90's material.
  24. very good Joe. I think Pat's melodic/harmonic and rhythmic sense rubs off on others.
  25. I made a CDR of the extra jam tracks sans "Confirmation" that make up the LP of the same name. I gave a professor of mine my old "Sermon" so I no longer have those two other tracks. It's ok though. My original Houseparty CD is buried in a box somewhere, where I have the RVG on my shelf for quick access, go figure. I don't mind the original LP sequence b/c I grew up with those two records.
