  1. they didn't play "Black Elk Speaks" huh? that's a shame. I wonder if the yelling goes on live too. Well, I consider "Braggtown" to be a live record, as everyone is in the same room in a concert hall, just no audience obviously.
  2. today's a beautiful day to die!!!!!!!!!
  3. This collaboration definitely works. As for a quieter Metheny release I enjoy it a lot more than "One Quiet Night" which was beautiful I just got a little bored at times. I think Brad adds a darker edge to his playing and compositions here that blend with Pat nicely. I dig the crescendo of "Legend" and like the almost poppish melody of "Annie's Bittersweet Cake". The quartet tracks are outstanding, "Ring of Life" is the money tune, I like that drum and bass/funky groove from Ballard and Pat and Brad just kill the sucker, I wish Steve Rodby was the bassist on this cut though, its special the sort of rock solid thing to Metheny tunes of this type. It may be possible that the second album will be a live album from the Metheny/Mehldau quartet performances beginning next year. Ok, calling Joe Gloss
  4. I like this one a lot after one listening......... actually, the burnout tunes crack me up........... but did anyone hear the bass solo on "Black Elk Speaks"? Damn.
  5. well they had difficulty getting both discs so I just cancelled and picked them up at a brick and mortar tonight.
  6. well, Metheny/Mehldau is "in stock" while Braggtown "usually ships within 10 days" so I hope that'll come.
  7. I ordered "Metheny/Mehldau" and the new Branford quartet record "Braggtown" from them, will they come through? the free shipping seemed a plus for me as well as the price.
  8. Blakey: the Blue Note version from 1960 is mine. I also enjoy the Basie band version from "Montreux '77" with Waymon Reed smokin it up on trumpet.
  9. I find the RVG fine, not treble heavy thankfully.
  10. paid by the note? Chuck!
  11. the clips sound excellent. Got my preorder in! I really gotta check out "House on Hill" also, I heard it in Barnes and Noble and it was cookin.
  12. I know what you mean about "Qing Wen" montg. It doesn't bother me that much, what does is the heavy compression on this disc as I noted in another thread. I enjoy this record though, "Standard of Language" for me may be KG's best record to date.
  13. Creative Wav studio does not seem to play CD's but straight wave files. Hopfully someone knows where we can access these programs
  14. I just popped in the new Kenny Garrett into the computer, and it sort of confirms my suspicion this record was compressed to hell and is very hot. I can see the levels peaking in Winamp on the first tune "Calling" on the left channel, but where do you guys get those programs that analyze waveforms? I would like to use such to see how compressed some of these discs are. Thanks Nonesuch for squashing the dynamics on this great new album
  15. shit, unless I get a job soon I won't be able to buy the Elvin
  16. wow Reid's other work is very interesting,we think of him as the Blue Note guy but he had many facets and stuff
  17. George Butler, ugh........ won that award or whatever which is on that useless track on "Blue Note Live at the Roxy" Dr. Death, err........ Butler knew he didn't know shit about jazz, he just took the gig. I think Butler produced Joey D. "Live at the Five Spot" on Columbia and that didn't turn out bad at all.
  18. my local Barnes and Noble has stopped carrying the new batches of RVG's entirely. Since like last year I have found nothing in the store I want

    Dewey Left Town!

that's good to hear at least. Prayers to Josh and his family in this rough time.

    Dewey Left Town!

did Joshua and his dad have a good relationship? from what I've gathered, no, but they made a record together right?

    Dewey Left Town!

RIP Dewey. only thing I have him on is Pat Metheny's "80/81".
  22. up. anyone else?
  23. he wrote most of the tunes on "Songbook", I like the energy of this new one overall, very intense soloing. I do hear some memorable things though a lot of stuff that will be standouts live. I hope the next KG record is live Paul, your views on this record are interesting and welcome. It shows how much different ppl interpret the same music. There are many melodies that strike me on this record, but also I think the emphasis of this record is more on blowing, rather than the composition+blowing aspect of "Standard of Language". One aspect I don't like of this new album, does anyone think it was recorded too hot? it doesn't sound as god as "Standard of Language" or "Pursuance".
  24. after a second listen, I have to disagree with Ratliff, I dig it. "Kiss to The Skies" I really like, the groove and melody, its sort of in the "Happy People" "Sing a Song of Song" vein, and "Realization" (Marching Towards the Light) I enjoy for the meditative trancelike quality, actually I want to find a translation for the chant sampled in it.
  25. I could not find the original thread on this, but anyway I picked it up last night. I gotta listen to it deeper, but so far "Calling" track number 1 kills, Pharoah sounds great on this. I also like the title cut, great solo by Mulgrew Miller who is under the piano, beneath the piano on top of the piano I also really like "Tsunami Song" really really pretty, and of course Booby plays great anyone else hear it yet?
