damn, what crappy news Tonic is closing

ok, so if I have the 2 TOCJ's of the Club Baby Grand material, my guess is that those additional takes have not survived? so is the eventual US RVG just gonna be 8 tracks?
-
yes, speedy recovery wishes for the both of them!
-
really Joe, "A Night Away", "The Sound of Water", "Towards the Light" "Don't Wait" "Secret Beach" or "En La Tierra Que No Olvida" haven't grabbed you? All those tunes really grabbed me. I know "Say the Brother's Name" you liked on the first record b/c its one of your favorite tunes :-) Totally unrelated thought but for the hard modes in the Guitar Hero series of games for PS2, XBox 360, etc... they should put a Metheny tune in, hehe

their show from Saturday night is on dime. Give that a d/l and listen. It totally changes the perspective from the album, burning stuff live. I dunno, I don't understand people's aversions to Pat's GR300 guitar synth personally I love the sound of it. When he solos on that thing he really cooks, and things always soar to crazy heights in those tunes. Calling Mr. Gloss!!!
-
definitely. I think the duet tracks work really well here too.

Gave it 2 spins so far and I really like it. Although I enjoyed the first album, I think the quartet tracks show what a potent combination Pat and Brad are, and that Brad is another great pianist behind Pat. He almost takes the Lyle Mays aesthetic further, especially on tunes like "The Sound of Water", and how he incorporates the main melodic frame in his solos is cool. I am really fond of "Fear and Trembling" which at the freeish pulse its taken at it almost reminds me of a Miles 2nd Quintet piece. Pat also takes some of his best guitar synth solos in recent years on "Towards the Light" (I hope he does this with the PMG at some point) and Brad's "Secret Beach" which is a slow bossa. The riff, which is almost like the one from "(Its Just) Talk", is a nice set up for Pat. "En La Tierra Que No Olvida" has a great tango groove from Jeff Ballard, wow he's really becoming a drummer I like a lot, especially from this disc and Kurt Rosenwinkel's "Deep Song".

if they are doing CTI, I hope they reissue the original "California Concert" album, properly remastered and with whatever tracks left in the can.
-
I bought Metheny Mehldau Quartet individually, which should come soon. From what I hear, the "Complete" set will have something containing links to future downloads from their tour coming up.

Citizen Tain is a great album, yes and Wynton does kill on the first track.

thanks Shrdlu, I wanted to make sure I didn't come off as abrasive, but Jaco had such a hard time, as as human I think its terrible what he went thru. Album wise, his self titled and "Birthday Concert" really do it for me Word of Mouth is incredibly ambitious but it doesn't hold as well, IMO.
-
I gotta disagree with you there Shrdlu. Jaco wasn't an idiot, he had mental illness, which was diagnosed far later than it should have. He was a manic depressive. He wasn't into drugs and alcohol originally, when he joined WR he got really crazy and the decline happened afterwards. As someone who has dealt with depression I think calling someone an idiot who is depressed is a bit much

anybody hear Zawinul's new double CD with the WDR Big Band called "Brown Street", is it worth picking up?
-
cash, lol.
-
I heard a full length "On Green Dolphin Street" on artistdirect.com, I liked it. I will be picking this album up later though, I ordered "Metheny/Mehldau Quartet" instead, and of course the JOS TOCJ's.

wow, thanks Kyo! that's a lot of stuff, wouldn't that make it closer to 3 or 4 CD's if there was a "complete" set? "Mitch's Movement"? funny title. Its interesting because quite a few of the rejected takes/unissued were attempted and released on studio albums later. Also makes me wonder how complete the Groovin at Smalls RVG is, which is 13 tracks total. I also wonder if the version of "Tunisia" done at the Baby Grand, is the same arrangement as the Jan 1960 trio version on "Crazy Baby!"
-
right on Soul Stream! Kyo, can you show me where you see all these unissued takes from the Baby Grand? I searched jazzdiscog.org and found these, all of which are the issued titles: Jimmy Smith (org) Thornel Schwartz (g) Donald Bailey (d) Mitch Thomas (ann) "Club Baby Grand", Wilmington, DE, afternoon 2nd set, August 4, 1956 Introduction By Mitch Thomas same personnel "Club Baby Grand", Wilmington, DE, night 1st set, August 4, 1956 tk.12 Where Or When same personnel "Club Baby Grand", Wilmington, DE, night 2nd set, August 4, 1956 tk.20 The Preacher (The New Preacher) same personnel "Club Baby Grand", Wilmington, DE, night 3rd set, August 4, 1956 tk.23 Rosetta tk.25 Sweet Georgia Brown ** also issued on Blue Note BST 81528 (pseudo stereo). Kyo, that would be an excellent RVG. However I bought TOCJ's of "At the Club Baby Grand" vols 1&2, on half.com, over the weekend, couldn't wait any longer!!!! I think the rejected July 3rd tracks are additional ones where Jimmy plays piano, which I remember hearing on this board sometime. The entire "Cherokee" session was going to be on piano but JOS stuck to the organ instead for the released tracks
-
I really wanna check out her albums, the energy she has is really amazing I think.
-
I hope its a good session, sessions like "Bucket" with that trio dissapointed me. Although my favorite album with this group is "Crazy! Baby"
-
really, more revelatory than some of JOS' 1957-8 sides? I think the sides like "Groovin at Smalls" feature some of his most stunning playing on records.
