  1. it appears to me "Lonesome Road" is the only JOS BN session that Rudy miked the organ in stereo, as the sound is very spacious. Are there any other instances of Rudy doing this in the early days?
  2. they have gone the straight ahead route, still a lot of R&B in their sound, but the albums "Mint Jam", "Time Squared" and "25"(which comes with a bonus DVD) are all worth checking out. Bob Mintzer is a great player, and one of the finest Brecker influenced tenors around. I really believe he and Bob Franceschini are carrying Mike's torch.
  3. thanks for the rather deep reply Aric
  4. gosh, my first JOS was The Sermon, when I was a baby literally. Now I am going to go listen to "Lonesome Road", which I got yesterday. I am very happy to have heard (w/ the exception of Straight Life as us all) heard everything JOS recorded for BN, I have owned it all too, altho there have been a few like "Bucket" that I sold. Happy b-day Hammond. Seriously the JOS thing is a huge accomplishment for me
  5. Steve Davis is playing here tommorow night.
  6. I really can't stand Bjork after a former friend force fed me a lot of her stuff.
  7. yeah Chester C. Thompson, the Genesis and WR drummer I am not talking about. Talkin about the organist
  8. thanks so much everyone. As a side note I really dig the Santana at Montreux set too, the Buddy Guy set I watched last night and it was fantastic! For those who have said Santana can't play blues, well thats a load of crap, sure Parker and Guy smoke him on the jams at the end, but they all were having a ball!
  9. some of it, the "Squib Cakes" solo for example. what a baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad solo!
  10. thanks Scott. Gate's set on the Blues at Montreux set is fantastic. Great band too, Joe Krown, new to me, and the sax player Eric Demmer (I think) were on fire
  11. I really love CT's playing with Santana, he is always tasteful and groovin, and his solo "Amazing Grace" from keyboard.tv is great too. Has he made any other albums as a leader besides "Powerhouse" on Black Jazz?
  12. I bought Carlos Santana Presents The Blues at Montreux 2004 which features Bobby Parker, Gate and Buddy Guy. I haven't watched the Buddy Guy disc yet, but I have seen him before on TV, have heard a few stray bits here and there and hes awesome . Anyway, this is my first foray into the blues as a genre, so what albums of Brown's and Guy's are recommended as an entry point. Is Guy's 4 disc "Can't Quit the Blues" on Silvertone/Legacy a good starting point? it also includes a DVD with documentary and concert footage.
  13. I grew up listening to this as a kid, I'm sure if I heard it now my feelings would have changed, but Stanley is great on "Vera Cruz", which Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau have been playing live.
  14. yes Elvin really was complete, right till the end.
  15. interesting thoughts mikeweil and Soulstream.
  16. damn. RIP Andrew. What a great, original player and innovator. "Dialogue" gets a spin later.
  17. As far as I know, at least what I have listened to, Elvin's first appearances on record date back from 1957. On Sonny's Vanguard stuff, Elvin definitely is playing in that more conventional bop mode, but theres the polyrhythms forming and a circular sense of time. Back when these sides came out, was there feeling that Elvin was doing something new, or did that something really "new" hit in 1961 when he joined Trane? Personally I can hear it on those "Night at the Vanguard" dates with Newk.
  18. I love his sideman work, the feel he had. I really need to listen to the Mosaic Select more, nothing really hit me over the head, although I do very much like the "Whims of Chambers" date. Thought about selling the set, but no, good music grows over time right?
  19. well in that TOCJ sale link, Toshiba issued "Civilization" and "The Story of Neptune" in Japan
  20. ahh yeah... with all this talk, Tokyo Live probably will get reissued, since some ppl have a direct line to MC.
  21. yes the live stuff is fiery. I also have a live show from Yoshi's in '88 that is just as good, it is a radio broadcast. I just really enjoy that band, although my fav. albums from the Select are "Civilization" and "Angel Street". The version of "Poinciana" from "Story of Neptune" is cool too as the groove is implied and played with brushes. Its interesting as noted in another thread that Wallace Roney stated Tony's cymbal sound never changed that much, but his stick size definitely changed.
  22. thats our own Felser I think. I couldn't lay down the money on his offer unfortunately. When the album was in print, was it this highly regarded?
  23. yes Kyo, $50-80 is unacceptable to me as well on ebay. I knew there was extra material, if it was put out as a boxset I'd buy it in a minute! Considering I won a rare JOS (Lonesome Road, thus completing my JOS on Blue Note listening) on ebay for only $14, someone should put up a cheaper price for Tokyo. It's possible to get rare and OOP titles without breaking your budget. Felser PM'd me a great and kind offer but I cannot take it at this time. I am just going to live with my CDR's of the album for a while. What's worse, if you look on Amazon, is the individual studio albums which are available readily in the Select, are up for ridiculous prices as well. Couldn't BN reissue Tokyo Live as a Connoiseur?
  24. is there anyone on this board that would be interested in selling (for a reasonable price) a copy of "Tokyo Live" to me? I have had a burn of it for 5 years but as I have the Mosaic set, I would like a real copy. I should be depositing more into my bank this week, so if we could work out a deal, send me a PM for details. I got outbid on a copy on ebay going for $78.89 final price!!!!
  25. I bought mine back in '96 I think
