  1. I have heard constantly that Ron is a jerk, but I love his liners for I think, the single disc of Miles' "My Funny Valentine". I can't comment on his personality all I know is I like the way he grooves, on stuff like Roberta Flack's version of "Compared to What".
  2. thanks. Dunno, Miles was one too. You know how we all have multiple personalities!
  3. anyone picking this up? I plan to for my birthday tommorrow, the soundclips sounded nice, especially the cuts with Gerald Wilson. Let's hope Blue Note gave him another contract and that this isn't just a one off.
  4. well, if the existing tapes are digitally archived, that's a bit of a minor relief.
  5. ok, well I've found "Believe It" as a standalone single CD reasonably priced import. I also wonder what year Tony abandoned the smaller kit for the infamous yellow Gretsch with the dot heads and the huge bass drum?
  6. well I really like "Three Quartets" and "Live at Montreux". I think I will be getting the Elektric Band's "Live at Montreux 2004" DVD b/c I think a live show on DVD from them would be better than some of those albums I would imagine.
  7. yeah, that does definitely make sense. BTW, is "Believe It" worth it as a single CD issue? I heard clips of "Million Dollar Legs" and well, it sucks.
  8. I guess that means they are gonna pull a lot of the catalog OOP? If Iron Mountain will store the tapes, that is not a good sign at all.
  9. really, even on those Herbie, Miles and Sam Rivers albums you consider Tony sounding a rock player, J Larsen? Interesting. When he was a teen with Miles he hardly listened to jazz, mainly rock and pop, the Beatles, Cream, etc. I mean the bashing style started appearing on "Miles in the Sky" and the other '67 sessions that made up "Circle in the Round" and so forth. I have heard Tony play straight rock with Santana and IMO he sounded damn good.
  10. Tony was definitely doing blast beats on this record though! Derek Roddy stated how jazz guys were doing that before death metal guys took it to new extremes. He was saying he had a vid of Tony (probably referencing New York Live) and how Tony was doing blast beats faster than most metal guys.
  11. I am not a huge prog rock fan either Jim, but I hear a lot of stuff in this record that sort of relates more to people of my generation. Tony's "vocals" have this sort of apathetic sense to them.
  12. damn man......................................
  13. I can kind of see that cuz Mahavishnu is more proggy. But, "Turn it Over" does cop a rock band's cover art I think. But anyway I hear various possible influences in this record and wonder if others feel the same.
  14. I GOTTA get the JOS shirt
  15. Finally picked it up yesterday after wanting it for years and hearing the vinyl years ago. Anyway, was this record an influence on prog rock, metal and punk? I consider the first two because of course there are unusual, in this case, nonsensical lyrics and long instrumental sections, and I can also hear an almost prototype metal drumming style. The punk thing, well I read it in a newsgroup once that "Emergency!" was considered an influential record in punk circles so how valid that is I don't know. Anyway comparing "Spectrum" and the title cut to Trio Beyond's versions is an interesting thing, they both function very well, and differently on their own terms.
  16. *Richard Steele impression* I'mma caution you again, obay my cummands at all times
  17. probably my fav. JOS trio BN.
  18. "Oh Baby" is a killer! One of my fav. Patton albums.
  19. wait a minute. The winning bidder on the $25 seller's bid "scifibri" has been selling copies of that on Amazon Marketplace for a while now. Must be grabbing another copy to sell for $64.95 or whatever he charged.
  20. yes I love this set.
  21. hmm, interesting about the snare angle, pretty cool story Randy.
  22. I sorta meant what drums he used as in brand, and cymbals.. they sound like Zildjian's either way, maybe an A as they were a bit brighter. Thanks Mike for catching my meaning.
  23. does anyone know what Donald's set up was with JOS for drums and cymbals? To me it sounded like he changed his snare around '59, it was tighter, bit more crisp, as far as I can tell he kept the same hi hat always. Sounded really tight.
  24. I wanna hear Joey do something with that arrangement. Really, what sort of a freakish mind do you gotta have with the head being played in that such weird way. I know local musicians who probably haven't heard that take on it.
