thanks, I've noticed 3 versions of the same title. i.e. Bernstein Century, Masterworks, Great Performances
-
Back when I was a kid, I had loads of these on vinyl, I had a lot of the Bernstein/NY Philharmonic ones, I love the version of the 1812 from 1957 which I see has been put out as a Sony Masterworks reissue, however, the Great Performances series I've seen some reissued with the original covers, not the beige/white bold black typeface covers, there are still many around on CD from the late 80's early 90's, are these ok sonically? I had gotten #12 which was a Bizet album on CD a long time ago. I haven't listened to classical for more than a decade, think I need to reconnect with my roots, grew up on a steady diet of a lot of classical and jazz but the jazz road has been the one for me for many years.

looking forward to the new record
-
just realized that today, JOS recorded "The Sermon" and all that material in what I feel is his greatest album, and one of the best sessions he participated in. Let's all go put it in!
-
I won a copy on ebay last night for $35 (that includes shipping) I put in a max bid of $100 just for kicks, no one bid that high on it.
-
I have the JOS on LP, I'll be getting the CD of that and also the Burrell.
-
I think JOS played at Newport in '57, hopefully they can release that too
-
just finished listening to this one, picked it up last night with the Horace Silver. "Life on Planet Groove" is the standard for live Maceo records, but this one joins that. The Ray Charles stuff is excellent as is the funk stuff, Dennis Chambers on "Pass the Peas"!
-
got mine and just spun it. Smoking indeed, excellent Louis Smith and Louis Hayes

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
CJ Shearn replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Bobby Hutcherson Mosaic Select disc 2 -
yep. the first one is 5,000 the others are 3,000. I have to wonder how much ebay craziness these may offer in the future
-
the previous 3 are outstanding as well. I am gonna finish disc 2 of the 2007 set in a few, "Haast Pass" kills, how it starts out with Hutch playing a waltz I thought it'd be that the whole time, but then the irregular metered bassline comes in......... So far that 2007 disc has had a lot of surprises. relyles, when I bought the 2004 and 5 sets (I bought all 4 at once) it said the first two were available in limited quantities.
-
I have really enjoyed all 4 SFJazz albums so far, I'll finish disc 2 tommorrow of Live 2007, but its really been great stuff. Will definitely preorder the Shorter/Live 2008 album when they announce it. If only Nonesuch would release the complete sets for those that have missed out on the sets on the SFJazz site.

congrats to Herbie, all I noticed is that he dyed his hair or something, not shaking. I didn't watch the show really, was listening to the SFJazz Collective Live 2006 album where they do Herbie's tunes. Glad Brecker posthumously won too.

yeah, the Trane one is even more insane. I gotta email this guy, apparently he is well known in France. -

I still look at that like "what..... the fuck?!" I've listened to the original solo on the record hundreds of times over the years That is the best I've heard anyone play a Pat solo ever on youtube, not even other guitarists do it that well. It also further shows how Pat's phrasing is so un guitar like, and how hes created his own bop language, really. -
astonishing.
-
the cover design reminds me of the late 40's early 50's ten inch BN covers, like "Genius of Modern Music", I gotta pick this new record up. On a side note, I was reading an article on Christian McBride's site that Horace suffers from Alzheimer's. how long has he had it?

when did Jack DeJohnette start using Sonor kits?

really jazzhound? the Trio Beyond record has some of the finest DeJohnette playing I've heard in years and IMO is probably my favorite playing of his, its fiery, sensitive and creative. I brought the "Setting Standards" box to work today, and since its my first time through that material I had to laugh out loud listening to his solo on "Flying Part 2", how he begins soloing while playing in and around the pulse, and then how the intensity just boils over. Other Jarrett performances I really like are "Autumn Leaves" on "Still Live", Jack just kills on that, "Poinciana" from "Whisper Not" and "Straight no Chaser" from the recent album. I also really love his playing on "One Night With Blue Note Preserved Vol. 2" especially "Appointment in Ghana" (ouch! he really spurs on Jackie Mac and Woody in a big way) and "Broadside" with Bennie Wallace. I definitely agree Randy about Jack, and one criticism I never understood is the complaint he over plays, he is a busy drummer sure, but he plays melodic ideas across the kit and plays with amazing sensitivity on ballads, take "When I Fall in Love" by Jarrett for example. Its not like Jack overplays on the level as say Dave Weckl used to in the past. Plus Jack always expands his scope, I like the way he uses loops on "Camp Meeting" by Bruce Hornsby for example. Allen, what was this "encounter"? was he buying music you didn't expect? he's rather eclectic and also seems to be one of the coolest cats around. I asked Larry Coryell between sets a few weeks ago, how its like playing with Jack, and he said "it's like riding a wild horse, it's fantastic!" -

anytime Lon I dunno why but I really love the sound of Jack's cymbals -
yesterday, but I ordered the Hutch and Tyner Selects, and all 4 SF Jazz Collective sets, I really liked what I heard on the Nonesuch compilation of the 2004 season

actually Lon, those are Sabian's he started using the prototype of his model when "Michael Brecker" was recorded. -
Paris Blues is a nice album, I can't listen to it much though because the treble is jacked so high. I bought it from emusic a few years ago
-
just wondering, b/c his overall basic drum sound hasn't change all the much, nice thick snare sound with some resonance, dry cymbals etc........ In the inside liner photo to Freddie Hubbard's "In Concert" Volume 1 it looks like a Sonor logo on the kick, did he start using Sonor's in the early 70's?
