the stuff Jaco plays on his debut, "Bright Size Life" and the "Birthday Concert" is simply astounding. More than anything, I love his compositions even more than his playing, and the big band charts on the "Birthday Concert" really showcase the amount of unique colors that type of ensemble could bring. "Three Views of a Secret" is one of my favorite tunes ever. IIRC the bouncer that murdered him only got 4 years in jail, a complete copout there. My guess is he reacted in self defense to a crazy man, and he had no idea who Jaco was.

thanks Jim! as I asked before but I think it got buried, the 5th drawbar produces that almost reedy tone right? cuz on "Groovin at Smalls Paradise" and such it adds a more biting attack definitely
-
Jim, is Jimmy using second harmonic percussion on his solo on "Endless Love" from "Off the Top"? theres a different attack, almost puffy, calliope like for lack of a better term, also on "Mainstem" from "Fourmost" the attack is slightly different than the 3rd harmonic percussion with the same kinda result on his "Endless Love" solo. on my Yamaha PSRE 403 theres an organ patch "16+ 2/3" which sounds exactly like the 2nd harmonic percussion, and when I combine it with the "rotary organ" patch, it sounds pretty much like what I described on the aforementioned JOS cuts. Actually listening to the "Endless Love" solo now, you can hear the 3rd harmonic percussion but it sounds like he has another drawbar pulled out besides the first 3, what is it?

All four Brooks albums are essential. oh yeah definitely. I already have the True Blue RVG so I just need the other 3 HolyGhost, can you post that pic in this thread? I'd love to see that.

thanks. I think I solved the problem as full fidelity returned. I think something was caught in the driver, thank you for the tip!

I have used my Grado's about a year, they've been great except for the grattle. I put them on this evening and found the left driver completely cut out after I tried a tip from the headfi forums to blow into the grill of the driver to reduce/eliminate grattle. What exactly happened? does it sound like something got disconnected inside the driver. I have a friend who is real into audio/repairing stuff and may have him take a look. These have been well cared for

excellent response from Carl Smith regarding the continuity so thank him for that . That's pretty much what I tried to say as well

Bob, welcome to the board. I think to answer your question, it isn't "canned applause" so much but the decision to edit the album as a continuous live performance, an approach I personally prefer rather than fading the applause after every track. I've read that what's done is they take the natural end of tune applause from one performances, and blend in the tail end of applause from the next track's venue so there is a smooth transition when the applause quiets. That would account for your questioning Sonny's announcement at the beginning of "Nice Lady" being from Victoria when the previous track was recorded in Japan.

Jim, the fifth drawbar is what produces that almost reedy clarinet type sound right? a la JOS on "Groovin at Smalls"? (the album, not the "Cool Blues" tune) It sounds like he was using percussion in conjunction with that fifth drawbar there.

it would be nice if BN or Concord did that with CDR's, press them on demand for certain albums. But at emusic we already have the tools for just that. I remember I joined emusic when I got my first burner and d/l and burned a massive amount of titles

I put all the Brooks on my X-mas list. Here's hoping. I put Jacknife on there too for early Jack DeJohnette.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
CJ Shearn replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...

just days after I lose my job, BN has to do this? the deletions of RVG's is sort of unnerving b/c like someone else said I thought they were permanently in print. Pulling "Our Thing" OOP (again) what the hell? Luckily I have it. Same for the two Blakey's on the list. "The Sounds of Jimmy Smith" I have considered b/c right now the Mosaic is still packed away somewhere, hopefully its not missing. The Hank and Lee sets are packed in the same box.

KENNY GARRETT - Sketches Of MD: Live At The Iridium (Mack Avenue)
CJ Shearn replied to JSngry's topic in New Releases
we can be thankful that when Kenny's done funky things like "Simply Said" (which DOES have 2 blatantly smooth cuts) and "Happy People" it has more taste than insipid lame shit like Kim Waters.. barf. When I picked up Grover's "Soul Box" a few weeks back at Circuit City after the heads up here. A woman in front of me was in line with 2 of Kim Waters' albums, "Soul Box" might be too smooth for some (hence why CC has it, they hardly have any straight ahead) but that album has more substantial playing then anything Waters has released. I was curious and checked out sound clips, dreadful stuff. All these cats sound like Sanborn or Grover with no distinguishing characteristics. -
JohnJ ask him if he remembers what his setup was on the JOS albums. In the "The Master" liner photos he looks like he has a crash cymbal sawed off, and what sound obviously like a K ride and maybe an A splash, and a China crash

another strange Jimmy(ie) Smith, lol. I'm sure he and Jimmy got along great. I've heard JOS was quite a drinker. What was strange about him, Valerie?
-
really? interesting, didn't know that. I'm sure when he toured with JOS he probably heard him talk about how shitty Larry was
-
thanks Marcello, thats a bit more complete than his wikipedia entry. Its sort of funny tho that on "The Master" its Jimmy, and Jimmie, which would make it confusing for those who aren't huge fans.

one of my fav faked live recordings is "Brother Jack McDuff: Live!" "The Front Room is proud to present America's most exciting jazz organist, Brother Jack McDuff!!!" *nasty splice with applause* I wonder if "CTI Summer Jazz @ The Hollywood Bowl" would be considered a fake live recording b/c the electric bass and drum parts were overdubbed, but maybe not b/c everything else is from the on location recording.
-
I always wondered about this guy, hes on all the Montreux '77 discs, and with JOS on "The Master" albums, solid tasteful player. I know he played with Groove Holmes and Jimmy McGriff as well, anyone have any background on him?
-
when Mitchell is collectively improvising with Jimi on "The Star Spangled Banner" it really reminds me of Trane and Elvin, as well as Trane w/ Rashied Ali
-
damn. great, tasteful player. RIP

I think Sonny Theodore Rollins. Anyway "Road Shows" is wonderful. Sonny on "Best Wishes", "Blossom" "Tenor Madness", and "Some Enchanted Evening" is masterful. I just wish he'd decide to release the whole Carnegie Hall gig

KENNY GARRETT - Sketches Of MD: Live At The Iridium (Mack Avenue)
CJ Shearn replied to JSngry's topic in New Releases
I love Kenny Garrett, but I feel underwhelmed a bit by the record, especially b/c when compared to the live shows I have of him circa 1996 with Pat, Nat Reeves, Brian Blade which are smoking. That said, "The Ring" is great, I love how Kenny explores those overtones and harmonics as Jim stated. Still I don't think this record touches "Beyond the Wall" or "Standard of Language". It would have been great if "Sketches" was a double album, as they did play "Beyond the Wall" tunes live, but I can enjoy it for what it is, and hey it gets more Pharoah out there
