Picked this up today. Upon first listening, this is good stuff. Holland and Potter really have a lock, and I haven't heard much Gonzalo Rubalcaba since "Discovery" but he's matured nicely as an improviser. Potter's tune "Minotaur" is a killer, it has a vamp section thats very reminiscent of Wayne's recent quartet stuff. Very nice record. Eric Harland is definitely one of my fav drummers right now, the way he applies tabla like ideas to a full kit is very cool.

I'd like to get this sometime soon. I've heard a bit on Rhapsody and it's fantastic, I haven't heard much of Wadada at all and wanted to check it out. Plus anything with Jack is a plus for me.

wow, they really should release that bit of Pres. For me, before Trane at least, Lester was the biggest influence on everyone. Such a sound and conception. Even in his final period like the Basie @ Newport record, he still sounds great.

Hans, I have all the new 50th Anniversary Legacy editions of the Brubeck, Davis and Mingus, and from what I understand the mixes on those are the same as the late 90's versions. I still have the '97 "Time Out" from the "For All Time" box, and while I play the new Time Out b/c its simply easier to grab off the shelf, the mastering between that and the '97 version sounds pretty much the same to me. Keep in mind I'm using Audio Technica ATHM 40 FS studio monitor headphones, which are flat response through an Onkyo amp and Technics graphic EQ.

Moog albums pre-dated the classic video game era by more than ten years. This album is going for the former, not the latter. oh yeah, I know . But still, I hate the sound of Miles' solo to the sound of an 8 bit square wave lead. Though I'm a child of the NES era, there were far more technical advances in game music, when I was 11 or 12 through composers like Yuzo Koshiro, Tommy Tallarico, and Nobuo Uematsu. Koshiro's soundtracks for the Sega Genesis series "Streets of Rage" have made for some of the best early 90's house in a game ever.

I have more than 30 Miles albums, more than 40 JOS, more than 20 Blakey, about 15 Hubbard's, more than 20 Metheny albums. (including every PMG album, the other 15 are solo projects)

I love video games, but that's bad.

yeah, rhythmically her songs are cool with the percussion, uses of funk and jazz influenced basslines and harmony. I agree that production wise the 5 or 6 songs from "Love Deluxe" hold up better, and though generally I'm not a fan of vocalists, I do listen to the lyrics in her songs, "Pearls" is some heavy stuff. A friend of mine was saying how he prefers Janet Jackson's blatantly sexual lyrics on tunes like "Warmth" over Sade, but for me there's no contest.

Ferdinand Jay Smith also composed the HBO World Championship Boxing theme songs, which are stuck in my head. Especially the one from the mid 80's.
