  1. Is there an inside joke on the cover with Jack DeJohnette's name x'ed out like "Art Sailor" on Jackie's Bag?
  2. anyone else hear this?
  3. Picked this up today. Upon first listening, this is good stuff. Holland and Potter really have a lock, and I haven't heard much Gonzalo Rubalcaba since "Discovery" but he's matured nicely as an improviser. Potter's tune "Minotaur" is a killer, it has a vamp section thats very reminiscent of Wayne's recent quartet stuff. Very nice record. Eric Harland is definitely one of my fav drummers right now, the way he applies tabla like ideas to a full kit is very cool.
  4. happy b-day Wayne! Is that really Wayne on his FB?
  5. I'd like to get this sometime soon. I've heard a bit on Rhapsody and it's fantastic, I haven't heard much of Wadada at all and wanted to check it out. Plus anything with Jack is a plus for me.
  6. wow, they really should release that bit of Pres. For me, before Trane at least, Lester was the biggest influence on everyone. Such a sound and conception. Even in his final period like the Basie @ Newport record, he still sounds great.

doesn't e-music have the Xanadu catalog available through download?
  8. thanks Shows On. Since everything is connected to my computer, windows media has HDCD compatibility.
  9. Hans, I have all the new 50th Anniversary Legacy editions of the Brubeck, Davis and Mingus, and from what I understand the mixes on those are the same as the late 90's versions. I still have the '97 "Time Out" from the "For All Time" box, and while I play the new Time Out b/c its simply easier to grab off the shelf, the mastering between that and the '97 version sounds pretty much the same to me. Keep in mind I'm using Audio Technica ATHM 40 FS studio monitor headphones, which are flat response through an Onkyo amp and Technics graphic EQ.
  10. what's the sound quality on this?
  11. I like that photograph, tasteful.
  12. Moog albums pre-dated the classic video game era by more than ten years. This album is going for the former, not the latter. oh yeah, I know . But still, I hate the sound of Miles' solo to the sound of an 8 bit square wave lead. Though I'm a child of the NES era, there were far more technical advances in game music, when I was 11 or 12 through composers like Yuzo Koshiro, Tommy Tallarico, and Nobuo Uematsu. Koshiro's soundtracks for the Sega Genesis series "Streets of Rage" have made for some of the best early 90's house in a game ever.
  13. I have more than 30 Miles albums, more than 40 JOS, more than 20 Blakey, about 15 Hubbard's, more than 20 Metheny albums. (including every PMG album, the other 15 are solo projects)
  14. I love video games, but that's bad.
  15. I'm with Lon on this one
  16. yeah, rhythmically her songs are cool with the percussion, uses of funk and jazz influenced basslines and harmony. I agree that production wise the 5 or 6 songs from "Love Deluxe" hold up better, and though generally I'm not a fan of vocalists, I do listen to the lyrics in her songs, "Pearls" is some heavy stuff. A friend of mine was saying how he prefers Janet Jackson's blatantly sexual lyrics on tunes like "Warmth" over Sade, but for me there's no contest.
  17. well, there is one new MJF release coming next week that I'm looking forward to Monterey Quartet
  18. Ferdinand Jay Smith also composed the HBO World Championship Boxing theme songs, which are stuck in my head. Especially the one from the mid 80's.
  19. she uses real drummers, Paul Cooke is an ass about his time in the band. I wonder what attracts a lot of us jazzheads to the music. I wonder if Sade could swing on a standard, probably not though. BTW GA Russell, would yourecommend the "Lovers Live" CD or DVD? I've seen clips on YT and I love the Chinese dress she wears on that, but is the CD pretty much the same as the DVD?
  20. yeah I look forward to when her new album hits. She seems to be fairly personable. Yeah, the jazz chords and things is what attracts me to her thing. I kind of ignored it in the 80's and 90's, it was just kind of there. But she has a great band, they've been together over 20 years, a rare thing.
  21. I'm sure the name will make many gag here, but I picked up her Best of last week. I dunno what it was that made me pay attention to her stuff now, but it is hipper than most R&B and soul on the radio nowadays. Excellent mood music though.
  22. I'm curious too
  23. I have the Legacy Edition, and find the sound much better than the Miles/Gil set. Although on disc 2 I skip the live "Aranjuez" because I have the Complete Carnegie Hall, 1961 disc.
  24. milk. Thanks for the info, Lon. I don't think any of that milk can be found in my area, maybe the health food stores.
