FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE End date 5/6/09 Press Contact: Beth Fleenor* The Frank Agency 206.491.0516 beth@thefrankagency.org *CDs, photos, and more information available upon request REPTET CANADIAN (BC) TOUR – July/August 2009 “This Seattle sextet does it all: it grooves, it rocks, it squawks - occasionally, it even talks. Mostly, it sounds like a New Orleans jazz band on crystal meth.” - Jazziz Magazine “Reptet is one of the most exciting bands to emerge from Seattle’s new music scene. In their creative plea they take on the vitality of traditional jazz, the rigorous perspective of post bop, the expressive enthusiasm of Latin music, the energetic certainty of the indie rock, the academic rigors of contemporary classical music, the exotic brashness of European folk music and the insatiable search of the free improvisation.” – El Intruso July 29 Victoria, BC - Hermann’s Jazz Club July 30 Vancouver, BC - The Libra Room July 31 Kelowna, BC - The Habitat August 1 Kaslo, BC - The Kaslo Jazz Etc. Summer Festival August 3 Nelson, BC - The Royal For more information please visit www.reptet.com or www.monktail.com The Band Seattle’s Reptet (Monktail Records) will be touring British Columbia in July and August to promote their new, internationally acclaimed record, Chicken or Beef? This will be their first trip to Canada, and it includes shows in Victoria, Vancouver, Kelowna, Kaslo and Nelson. Winners of two 2007 Earshot Golden Ear Awards, this genre bending band is comprised of six multi-instrumentalists who have an expansive approach to music, performing original compositions that incorporate jazz, rock, ska, punk, modern classical, avant garde, eastern European folk influences and more. Their critically acclaimed 2006 release, "Do This!" won numerous accolades, appeared on the year-end top-10 lists of many jazz critics and was chosen the number one Jazz CD of the Year by Jazziz Magazine's Alex Gelfand. Their latest disc, “Chicken or Beef?” (Monktail Records) released in June 2008, was chosen finalist for Jazz Record of the Year by the 8th Annual Independent Music Awards and has been lauded by luminary Simpsons creator, Matt Groening. Their live performances have been described as, “arresting, compelling and just plain cranked-up!” with stage shows evolving into transformative performance art pieces using costumes, story telling, dance routines and absurdist humor. Reptet have proven themselves to be a unique and utterly enthralling multi-leveled experience, leaving an indelible mark on the memories of their audiences. This internationally touring ensemble will be releasing their first 7" vinyl single in the fall of 2009, recording their next CD in the winter and launching a European tour in the spring of 2010.

6/6/09 REPTET: GO BEARS Track Go Bears Group Reptet CD Chicken Or Beef? (Monktail MCMC8) Musicians: John Ewing (drums, percussion, bull moose call, vocals), Samantha Boshnack (trumpet, flugelhorn, slide trumpet, vocals), Chris Credit (baritone, alto and tenor saxophones, vocals), Tim Carey (upright and electric bass, baritone guitar, vocals), Nelson Bell (trombone, tuba, euphonium, conch shell, vocals), Izaak Mills (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, flute, percussion, bull moose call, vocals), Satchmo (vocals), Jack (vocals) Composed by Tim Carey Recorded: Seattle WA, January 6-8 2008 Rating: 86/100 (learn more) Seattle’s own Reptet is a six-piece band that’s just this side of zany; too unorthodox for Steeplechase and too tonal for ESP-Disk. They might employ a few unusual instruments (like a baritone guitar, a bull moose call or a euphonium) and throw in non-jazz interludes into their jazz, but the songs never quite get too messy to be engaging. “Go Bears” is a pretty good example of their modus operandi. It begins with a rapid ostinato straight out of a black and white comedy, and then moves into a late-sixties jazz groove led by Credit’s boss baritone. Just as you might start chilling out to it, the tape is speeded up and slowed back down to real time again. The groove soon ends anyway and replaced with Boshnack’s lone mariachi trumpet before returning to the original comedic chase scene music that crashes into a full-on freak-out, Rahsaan Roland Kirk style. OK, so “Go Bears” might not be so serious, but it’s seriously fun. Reviewer: S. Victor Aaron SOURCE

Or see 'em. Damn, is that me?!?!

I sent CD to a few people that I admire, just for the hell of it. I know that Matt was a close personal friend of Frank Zappa's and is a huge Captain Beefheart fan, so I thought, not only is he super cool, but he might actually like the record.

Artist: Reptet CD: Chicken or Beef? Home: Seattle, Washington Style: Jazz/Funk/Rock By Jana Pochop Reptet is a force to be reckoned with on disc, simply because it sounds like they are physically crawling off the CD into your living room to rock out when you pop their album, Chicken or Beef? into the player. This Seattle sextet is a dynamic group of drums, bass, and four horns. They would probably be filed under Jazz on your iTunes playlist, but Chicken or Beef? covers expanses of reggae, punk, ska, and plain old rock 'n roll, and all deliciously. The record starts off with "Danger Notes," a funky track that brings to mind a really good black and white movie with a harrowing chase scene. Reptet is good at painting pictures through their instrumentals and keeping them varied so the listener’s attention never wanders. Tracks like "Eve of Thrieve" and "Fish Market" keep the pace going. "Fish Market" features some fun vocals with the refrain, "Why don’t you get yourself a fillet tonight?" It’s avant-garde and different; some might call it challenging listening because it’s not the typical pop song, but Reptet massages the complicated lines and arrangements with a sense of fun and nonchalance. Chicken or Beef? captures an energetic, smart band at its best. If the record is any indication, their live show raises the roof wherever they go ... luckily listeners can raise their living room roofs with this disc.

Hmmm. why did Charles Mingus hate the South? OK suckers, I'm leaving on an early plane in the morning. I'll see you in the Big Apple, or the Big Scrapple - whichever the case may be.
-
Why do you hate Reptet?

Wonderful. And sorry guys, I tried to get DC and Richmond on the tour but I started booking too late in the game...my bad. Next time for sure. Although, it is only a two and half hour drive from DC to Philly.

San Francisco free jazz / new music / outside jazz?
Johnny E replied to johnlitweiler's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
It's OK. It really was just the bar owner. If he had had a different attitude we would have looked at this gig as a great success. I know that comments made by a few musicians are not necessarily indicative of the scene as a whole. And yeah, the bathroom situation there is ridiculous - the women’s room does not lock and when it opens anyone on the stage or close to it can see right in - it made Sam very uncomfortable to say the least. I'm glad to hear that SF does in fact have a inside/outside scene that is supportive of each other and cross-pollinates. As I said, this is not my city so my opinion of it is based on limited experience. But to elaborate, it seemed that the limited negative response we got was not necessarily a reaction to our tendency to play inside/outside music, but rather to our stage show with all our over-the-top irreverence, and our tendency to poke fun at ourselves and not take it all too seriously. Maybe it’s a respect thing these cats are lookin’ for, I don’t know. Mitch, although I never met him, seems like a really nice guy (he gave us his night simply because Evan Francis said we were cool). I like his playing a lot too. All said, I really like the Bay Area and we intend to keep playing there as often as possible. Thanks for your insight Nathan. -
Thanks for coming last night Bill. I hope you enjoyed the show (and especially the new tunes). I thought Greg Ginn's stuff was pretty cool. Lots of guitar loops and pre-recorded bass and organ. Although that drummer was playimg pretty simple stuff, he had to play along to rigidly tempoed, pre-recorded stuff with unpredictable forms. THAT'S HARD! Lotsa fun.

Sweet. Burnt Sugar hits at 9:30 and we hit around 11. I hope Flip Barnes is in town at that time. When he's in town he plays with Burnt Sugar. Flip is a bad ass muthafucker and a sweet guy too. I'm going to try to make it, too. Peter, it's your job to remind me a week before. Just to be clear, In Philly it's Reptet only at Chris' 8PM-12AM (three sets). In New York it's Reptet and Burnt Sugar at DROM 9:30PM-12AM (one set each). Thanks, -john
