I would second that opinion!

Uh... You don't own this album, then?

Seriously, scrimp and save every penny you can, sell off unwanted possessions, work overtime, whatever it takes, to get the Mercury box. One of the most consistently enjoyable collections of music I own. It will give you many hours of rewarding listening. After that, there was a twofer of Rip, Rig & Panic (which is in the box) with Now Please Don't You Cry, Beautiful Edith (which isn't) on Emarcy. Inflated Tear (Atlantic) Kirk's Work with Jack McDuff (Prestige/ OJC) The Jaki Byard Experience (Prestige/ OJC) Roy Haynes- Out of the Afternoon (Impulse) Charles Mingus- Oh Yeah (Atlantic) Some of the later Atlantic is a little patchy but he usually does something worthwhile on all of them. And, while it's not in the front rank of Rahsaan appearances, try and catch his guest spot with Mingus on C Jam Blues from Mingus at Carnegie Hall (Atlantic, 1974)... Kirk totally tears up George Adams with hilarious consequences!

Lazily written by an ill-informed pseud. How dare he mock Earth Wind and Fire's wardrobe!

Wow! My ex-girlfriend gave me a copy of this album (she said the saxophone solo on- I think- the opening track sounded like me! ). We broke up not long after and I haven't played it since... Will have to revisit.

Whatever you call it, that's one weird looking axe...
-
Oh, and his guitar is one of the oddest things I've ever seen!
-
I've only got a couple of Charlie Hunter things but I like them. There's a good DVD out as well, Right Now Live which lets you study his technique up close... it really doesn't sink in listening to the records but watching him is quite staggering. The first few tracks are solo guitar, the rest is with a good band with John Ellis on tenor & bass clarinet and Gregoire Maret on harmonica.
-
I always think I'm neutral about him, but then I'll listen to one of his albums (as leader or sideman) and enjoy it. Best taken in small doses, though, I find.
-
Great flute player, too.

Yep. The titles referred to the albums they were on. Looking at it now I should have made that clearer.
-
Yep, same session. Brownie sits out which is why it doesn't appear on his discography. BN507-0 tk.12 It Could Happen to You BN BLP 5028, BLP 1506

Forget? I didn't know anything about it!

Apparently the recording sessions were videoed, so you never know...

Just noticed this has been discussed before: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...l=song%20x&st=0

I'd heard it was on the way, but I just came across it on the Nonesuch website... A new version of Song X, the rather wonderful collaboration of Pat Metheny and Ornette Coleman. The original eight tracks have been remixed and remastered and... wait for it... there are six additional tracks from the sessions! Police People All of Us The Good Life Word from Bird Compute The Veil Metheny's been quoted as saying the extra stuff is as good, if not better, than the original tracks. August release date, apparently. With the Tubbs reissues, the Miles Cellar Door box and the Monk/ Coltrane this is gonna be an expensive few months...
