Actually, the previously issued tracks are all in their original mixes. Guess there's some extra beef in the mastering.

Just popped in disc 1....

My copy is at the store, ready to collect tomorrow at 10am...

The answer to this depends on what day you ask me. Jazz (whatever that is) will always be number one. Number two depends on my mood at the time. Any of those could fit the bill (well, maybe not country...) given the right day. In fact, you could add Brazilian music, salsa, reggae, etc, etc.....

I would guess because 'Red China Blues' is considered more an 'outside' project. It's not Miles' band or anything, he just happens to be playing on it.

I'd pay extra for him not to 'rap' again

I'd be interested to see some jazz artists take up this idea. I believe jazz has suffered from adhering to the schedules typical of rock bands, bringing out an album every three years, 6- 12 months after it was recorded. More immediate documentation would reflect where the artists are now, not where they were a year ago. Not to mention putting any profits into the hands of the people making the music.

This is finally on the HMV stores database with a UK release date of October 29th

This is shaping up like the Cellar Door fiasco. We ain't seeing it this year, I'll bet. Without going through Losin's listings with a fine tooth comb, I'm guessing most of the 'missing' material is stuff on which Miles doesn't actually play. A lot of studio recordings from this period are sketches of compositions or tracks intended to be overdubbed later- Miles couldn't always be depended on to be in the best of shape in those years. Not that the Miles-less stuff on 'Unknown Sessions' is without interest.

crap - Miles Bitches Brew disc 1 became unplayable!!!
Rosco replied to king ubu's topic in Miscellaneous Music
My BB box is the same. Disc 1 goes down further than the others. No glue (yet) though. You have my sympathy, although it pales in comparison to what happened with my copy of the Bill Evans Verve box. Sheesh! -
Another fine Sangrey post!

Uh... Weathery Port? Been listening to Joe all day. Mysterious Traveller and Sweetnighter must be among my all time favourite albums. Found some time for tracks from Live in Tokyo, Black Market and Zawinul, too. I still want to get round to a couple of the Syndicate albums. Bits of Brown Street sound very good indeed.

Not totally unexpected, given his hospitalization, but shocking and deeply saddening nonetheless. RIP Joe.

By this point in Miles' music the idea of 'complete songs' was something of an anachronism. I can see why this would put off some listeners, but I find the fragments and (often very different) re-takes fascinating.

What happened? Did they forget the 'Directions in Music by Vincent Wilburn' stickers?

I have a version on Charly from 2000 (cat no. CDGR 294-2), which sounds very decent. I would assume any subsequent Charly reissues to be much the same. Snapper is a subsiduary of Charly, so again I'd imagine that would be the same, too. IIRC, all the CDs I have on Sunspot are needle-drops. Mind you, looking for the 'best sound' of a Sun Ra session might be the ultimate Quixotic pursuit.

The girl is a genius! Think about it. She gets asked why 1/5th of Americans can't find the US on a map. The obvious answer to give is: 'Because 1/5th of Americans are dumb fucks'. Ain't nobody winning a beauty contest with an answer like that. So, she turns it around and manages to blame South Africa. Brilliant, I say! She should go into politics.

That one looks very interesting!!

Oh, it's a helluva show, one of my favourite Miles boots. I'll be buying this version, but is it too much to expect these things to be done right?
-
just small irritating ones - right when you start the disc: there's (even) a small edit right in the middle of the crowd sound of the 41 second cut (unbelievably so) and then it very abruptly goes into Autumn Leaves - actually clipping the first note from Miles. Just irritating blips like that that I think could've used some care. The more that I think of this first cut - Waiting For Miles - business, the more I think that it's a weird, unnecessary slap at Miles' personality, ...or it could be my lack of sleep... I have a boot of this show and Miles' entry in Autumn Leaves is intact. Surely the is idea that official issues of these things should be an upgrade on the boots, no? And some folks wonder why the bootleg business thrives. Still, who gives a crap about the music, just as long as they spell the lawyers' names correctly, right?

You have my deepest sympathies, Mark. Our family cat had to be put to sleep two weeks ago and it was a real wrench. Polo was 19 years old and was one of a litter of feral cats that my folks had hand reared (my mother used to do volunteer work for animal walefare back in the day). My dad bottle fed this one kitten and when the rest of them were homed they kept Polo. The cat and my dad were very attatched to each other. I don't think there was an evening in those 19 years when she didn't curl up next to him on the couch. She was an incredibly sweet-natured animal and, unlike a lot of cats, was very into human company. Never any trouble, rarely strayed further than the backyard, never once went to the vet. Her one vice was sneaking into the bathroom and tearing the spare tolilet roll into pieces, scattering pulped shreds of tissue all over the place. During the last few weeks of her life she became very skinny and in the last couple of days stopped eating altogether (and man, did this cat like her food!). The vet said her liver, kidneys and thyroid were going, her back legs has started to seize up and, well, it was just time. My dad was real upset by it, but no one wanted to see her suffer. Never saw my dad cry before, but he wept for his little feline buddy. Tore me up. We miss her.
