i heard Leroy last August (at the Charlie Parker Festival) and this past February in NY (with Barry Harris), and he's still an excellent drummer.
  4. charles mcpherson, jeff littleton, tootie heath and i forget the pianist's name.

i didn't really "know" him. as i said, i used to see him quite frequently at meetings and Buddhist activities. so, now you can be not so in awe!!

i actually got to see quite a bit of him in the '70s when we were both practicing Nichiren Buddhism in Santa Monica. i'm ashamed to admit though that i never really knew what a great musician he was until after he passed away!
  7. i actually didn't want to admit it but i was holding the dope!!
  8. that was a pretty good one. i was anxious to open the thread!!
  9. i remember him fairly well, primarily because he was so good-looking and had gorgeous eyes. seemed when the team was in Boston, Mickey, Yogi, Don Larsen and Blanchard would all hang at this tavern after games where i and a girlfriend or two would be (even though we weren't old enough to drink)!! never got denied service either!! given how many drinks i remember downing over a period of hours, they must have been watered down which was lucky for me. i was drinking V.O. and ginger ale. can you imagine. then we graduated to scotches. we were still in high school and had no business being there but we were thrilled beyond. should have written a book!! i think most already know what a dirty mouth Mickey had with young girls. he didn't keep it a secret although he should have!
  10. yeah, and whenever you see him, since he loves to hug, you end up wearing the same scent as he has on!!
  11. and bless him for many, many more years!! saw him on a jazz cruise just a couple of months ago and he played his behind off! and is still the sweetest man one could meet!
  12. oh, my goodness, James. i confess that i remember our meeting (and dinner) well but damned if i can remember seeing Mulgrew and Steve as a duo that night!! and they remain two big favorites of mine these years later! guess you can take that as an obvious compliment!
  13. oh, my Lord!! just horrendous. i hope much better for the daughter i seem to remember Plath having.
  14. my sentiments exactly. every time i see it, it provokes a very unpleasant feeling. thanks in advance, hardbopjazz.
  15. I agree with everything you just said, Ray. This is very sad news. Unless... the Bakery opens somewhere else closer to me! I love the Culver City space and vibe, but it isn't located near where I live these days... I used to live about 15 minutes away, but now it's more like an hour away (with good traffic). Ruth mentioned she wants the new space to be "on the Westside", but who knows what will come of that... the rents there are nuts right now! Cheers, Shane i believe the rents are the lowest they've been for quite awhile!
  16. Probably the reason they gotta move. Jazz thrives on cheap rent. you're right. but they also have "thrived" all these years as they're a non-profit.
  17. this is very lousy news! i'm going to be there this coming Friday to see Ron, Mulgrew and Russell. their location has become a hip one instead of the off-the-beaten-track area it was just a few years back. there used to be one decent restaurant within walking distance and now there are at least four. this is a damn shame that they have to move, once again.
  18. you are SO "out to lunch"!!! give it a rest already!
  19. really interesting info, caravan. thanks for sharing it. if it's not too personal a question, where in Portugal do you live? i spent about six glorious weeks in your country years ago, mostly around Cascais, Estoril, Sintra with day or weekend trips further north to Fatima, Caldos de Reyna(sp?), etc. loved the people, food and wine enormously. i actually got to hear Weather Report in Lisbon while there so that gives you an idea of how long ago it was!
  20. i get very sad every time i hear her name or listen to her, although it is also a great joy to hear her music! is that what they call a conundrum?!? or maybe a Catch-22. anyway, a great loss/tragedy, yes, indeed!
  21. This is from the same collection, Valerie: I taped the whole thing as the day went on (over the radio), now there are bit torrents of the music around. you certainly hold a lot of jazz history in your hands, as does Chris. thanks to both of you for sharing with all of us. priceless!
  22. my father was at that White House event and i remember being very jealous that i wasn't able to go! afterwards, everyone was talking about how cute it was that Dizzy played "Salt Peanuts" for President Carter!
  23. i second that assessment, Marcello!! i just saw her last month and she's working on her dissertation. amazing woman! and continues to be the biggest supporter of jazz. I'm sorry I missed her at Dizzy's when she stopped by with Kareem to see Joe Locke with the Trio da Paz in August. yes, they are two of the greatest jazz fans!!
