  1. pretty much my reaction as well, JSngry, especially about some of the very naive, "manipulative" scenes and the repetition of images. the best part for me was seeing the guys as i remembered them in the '60s: Ben Riley, Larry Gales, Charlie Rouse, Paul Chambers, Bobby Timmons, etc. and hadn't seen Harry Colomby probably since the '80s. was glad to see the docu, however, with all its warts and moles!
  2. Marla has more jazz information than anyone i know!! bless you.
  3. since i first met and worked with Bill in 1961 (Cafe Wha?!), i think i've been privy to the good, the bad and the ugly. don't know anything about the "exploitation" of something that was a family tragedy. i do, however, know a lot of good stuff he has done for jazz musicians going back to the early '70s. there's always more than three sides. regardless, this drum sequence is quite wonderful.
  4. believe it or not, Chris, i think you just might find this one funny and interesting!
  5. thanks, BeBop. enjoyed reading the article. i'd still like to hear a review of the Yoshi's evening tribute. guess i'll have to call upon Peter Williams!
  6. OMG, BeBop, what a drag!!! to say the very least!
  7. has anybody heard anything about the Yoshi's tribute/benefit? i sure hope lots of folks showed up!

    Joe Lovano

what a major drag. i am so sorry for Joe. he's been working his butt off lately. boy, he's sure going to get an enforced "vacation". enjoyed him SO much at Monterey less than two months ago. wishing him a smooth and complete recovery. and echoing what others have said, he seems like a genuinely great guy, aside from his awesome talent. we're rooting for you, Joe!
  9. Phil is a wonderful musician and a stand-up guy. i'm fortunate to have heard him play live too many times to count. in fact, the most recent time was just a couple of weeks ago. i'm hoping more people come to realize what a talent he is.
  10. i don't remember ever paying a cover at Slug's in the '60s!
  11. i am SO embarrassed that i'm the only one not requesting the download!!! c'est la guerre though! it may just follow that i'm also the only one not knowing any of the tunes!
  12. all i have heard is that she was in a car accident recently, received treatment in a hospital and was sent home to recuperate. there is unverified talk about her dying as a result of undiagnosed damage received as a result of the accident. extremely tragic and sad news, indeed!

    Roy DeCarava

yes, yes, a wonderful photographer! very good thing he wasn't afraid of low light as he captured some of his best in little jazz clubs! he left us a ton of wonderful work.
  14. The Half Note the Village Vanguard the Village Gate the Five Spot Slugs was most definitely at all of the above, more times than i could possibly count, and it's all a blur!! LOL!!
  15. i thought there was another thread awhile back that covered all these wonderful Manhattan jazz clubs, no?
  16. what a clever "thank you" note! not surprised from whence it came, of course!! belated but strong wishes for many happy and healthy birthdays in your future!
  17. last night and the night before: Roberta Gambarini with Eric Gunnerson, Chuck Berghofer(sp?) and Willie Jones III. i guess it's obvious i enjoyed these folks immensely!!
  18. Let me guess the answer: do you think most patrons know, let alone care who was married to Miles Davis? exactly what i was thinking. and i don't think it's "rude" thinking, just realistic!
  19. five and a half years later and Frances is still at the Hamlet! and she's been there much longer than five and a half years! i remember many decades ago, we never actually thought of Miles as bi-sexual but more as someone who liked to "freak off" with sex and drugs!
  20. as someone who never spoke with Cindy and never knew about her until this thread, i'm just wondering what her leaving after being there years means about the company, especially given the recent stuff that's been happening there. p.s. i also wish her good luck!
  21. the majority of tickets were obtained free by Joe and Jane Public through a lottery system. the cd will be available tomorrow, i believe. i have pre-ordered through Amazon.
  22. didn't get to see this post until now, jazzkrow! i was at the Festival and had an amazing time. enjoyed about 17 different events! i'm certain you had a great time as well!
  23. he was at Monterey and i got to hear part of an amazing performance from him and his musicians (only one i remember is Cyril Neville on percussion). Henry is such a strong player and the crowd was responding strongly as well!
