  1. So cool!!! I just read that on Yahoo, and was checking this forum, and saw someone posted. Any idea if they will post samples?
  2. Well, since the holidays are drawing near, I figured it would be fun to see if anyone was asking their loved ones for anything from Mosaic Records. Since the Coleman Hawkins box set is delayed...I am going to ask for: 1. Mosaic Select: Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin (MS-033) 2. Mosaic Select: Sidney Bechet (MS-022) There's nothing like opening up one of those big Mosaic boxed sets, but since the Hawkins won't be here and the Chu Berry is out of stock, these selects look pretty good!
  3. disc 5 What a woman! And one HELL of a Mosaic set. Such variety, great sound, and of course Anita O'Day swingin' and doin' her thing.
  4. Why...oh why did I watch this! LOL. Really I watched the whole thing......
  5. Holy Crap, that' LOW. Tuning seems quite "flexible" or perhaps it's the operator and not the instrument. This is what I unfortunately woke up to today... Ok...so I dig Charlie Ventura's bass sax playing, and I'm sure James Carter has one too...but geez....a whole album??? I'm gonna look this up when I'm bored at work. LOL
  6. I have had Amazon Prime for several years. I too agree that the program is only worth it if you buy enough off of Amazon. Luckily for me, I am addicted to buying books and cds And I love the fact that if someone on this board mentions a recording that they've been digging, I can get it next day if I want. Buying off of Amazon is a big time saver, especially for Christmas shopping for relatives, I can buy as much as I want, and it'll be free 2nd day air mail. I know there's iTunes, but for me, if I can get the physical product, that's the way I go. LOVE Amazon Prime
  7. Count Basie Roulette Studio Sessions Disk #3, this NEVER gets old. Man, I wish I could've heard this band live....
  8. Mosaic Artie Shaw Disk 6, finally starting to really appreciate this music! Bought this set probably a year ago, and after repeated listens it's becoming enjoyable. I think Shaw had a totally different musical outlook that his peers.
  9. OK, so....here's a confession: I can really only think of one "Avant Garde" box set I own, and that's the Sam Rivers Mosaic set. Of all the eras and genres in jazz, Free Jazz and Avant Garde are so poorly represented in my collection compared to big band and small group jazz. I took a listen to the Braxton and Threadgill sets on the Mosaic website and wish they had longer sample tracks. I know this is a "Favorite Free Jazz" box sets thread, and I don't want to hijack the thread, but I need some consultation and advice to beginning a free jazz collection. I find a big emotional connection to Ellington and Basie, I love 50s and 60s bop/hard bop, I have a pretty broad collection/appreciation of music OTHER than free and avant garde.....I think it's time for me to grow up and learn to appreciate the "freer" music. So, lay it on me! What should I get/ask for Christmas this year? Thanks Everybody!!!
  10. Lee Morgan Mosaic Disk #4 Night in Tunisia, and Lover Man so far. Lee Morgan is really one of the most creative trumpet players, it's really cool to hear him come into his own through the 4 disks. Really diggin' the late 50s bop/hard bop these days...
  11. Sam Rivers, Disk 2, "When I Fall in Love" Beautiful, empathetic playing from all involved. Great music to relax to on a Friday evening.
  12. I completely agree! In fact I just listened to a few tracks, and feel the same way (Benny getting spurred on by Roy). I don't have any of the original LP's but I have the Mosaic set. Roy is the essence of Jazz! Always going for it!
  13. Thanks for the kind words!
  14. Well....hopefully you got a good price for that set, a lot of recent eBay sales have been $400+ I think all Basie is worth hearing, but for my ears, the Roulette recordings were something special. I still love to listen to the Clef/Verve sessions a lot as well though. Hope you enjoy the new set!!!
  15. I've got the Big Band set, and yes there are vocals (not sure on the exact number) but I think the music more than makes up for it. The set that annoys me is the Mosaic Lionel Hampton Box set, I cannot stand Lionel's voice. I have been really digging the Anita O'Day set. Great music, fantastic bands, and really, Anita is in my top three jazz vocalists of all time (1. Billie Holiday 2. Ella 3. Anita). I was too young/poor to afford it back when it timed out, as I had to have "Mosaic priorities" and was really excited when I found a sealed copy on eBay recently. This will be a set that will NOT get old.
  16. Well at least it's delayed for a good reason. So I guess the set will have some more tracks, I think that's worth waiting for
  17. I really appreciate the post!!! It's cool that Scott reads the forum. Really appreciate Mosaic for the quality that they stand for, and am always excited for what they have in store.
  18. I've used Safari since about 2007 on my Macbook Pro and love it! Less crashes than Internet Explorer on PC. Love my Mac and love Safari!
  19. Looks like a great day to have a dark beer. Looks good!
  20. Hawk's not really a "Christmas" kind of guy anyways. For that, you'd go more to Bud Freeman. HAHA Well, if Hawk's not a Christmas guy, he's probably a New Years Eve party type guy...and hopefully Mosaic can get this release nailed down because I want this set NOW!
  21. First things first, any era of the Basie band was a good one! Some better than others...but always cool and swingin' As far as the Clef/Verve box and the Roulette boxes are concerned, I would like to throw some thoughts into the ring: The Clef years found Basie with a newly reformed band, some charts from the old days, and some new arrangements by, among others, Ernie Wilkins (who really knew how to write big band charts...) Lockjaw Davis, Paul Quinchette and Joe Newman have quite a bit of the solo duties. The band, to me, sounds unbalanced compared to the late 50s, but that may well be recording technology (or Reunald Jones' VERY loud sound). A really cool part of the Mosaic Clef/Verve set is the small group recordings with Buddy Rich, Lockjaw Davis, Oscar Peterson, Paul Quinchette, etc. I could listen to that music all day. I didn't know to expect small band with this set. The band recorded a lot of charts that I had not heard before getting this set, "Basie's Back In Town" and "Coast to Coast" for example. Of course there are the "April in Paris" sessions and the Joe Williams sessions that are classic. I love having this boxed set and listen to it often...however, I prefer the Roulette Studio and Live recordings better (completely subjective). I think the reason is threefold: Better sound quality, more interesting (for me) arrangements, more defined section phrasing. The sound quality is just a product of the times, but the Roulettes are amazing (same goes for the Maynard Ferguson Big Band recordings on Roulette). The arrangements on the Roulettes feature Frank Foster and Thad Jones in all of their big band glory plus Ernie Wilkins, Frank Wess and Neal Hefti...the band NAILS the music. Marshal Royal is lead alto perfection, and Snooky Young is a powerhouse lead player with taste. For big band, the Roulette Studio sessions is my "Desert Island" box set. So, I've been bugging Mosaic to release Basie from the mid 60s till around 1970....but I doubt that'll happen. Hopefully everyone who wanted the Basie Clef/Verve box set got it!!!! I'm wondering if this timed out or sold out?
  22. Epicer! I had to stare at that word for some time before getting "it", though this was before my morning coffee. I think I'll put this on my Christmas list. Thanks for the heads up!
  23. Now Mosaic is saying end of December/Early Jan. ?!?!?!
