  1. You're right Lol. According to the 'HMV Japan' website HMV Japan the 'international' box set is due out on 19 September with the Japanese box set on 18 October. Both sets are three CDs and a DVD. I'm not an expert on Weather Report so I'm not sure whether its a 'best of' or new/unreleased tracks - or both?
  2. C'mon then, tell us all about it! Also, can anyone give any info on the two Jim Hall CDs ie who is on them and are they any good?
  3. The following CDs are scheduled for future release. 4. Great to hear that so many of you are buying the Elvin Jones set before it disappears. I managed to obtain a copy on ebay a few years ago but without a box or booklet so I've been trying to get Mosaic to sell me them since then. However, I keep being told that they won't sell until the set has gone out of print, so the quicker that happens the quicker I'll get my box and booklet. BTW I agree with tranemonk, this is terrific set with no weak CDs. I was very surprised with the quality of all the sessions and it's a great mystery that hardly any of the CDs have been released individually.
  5. The CDs are marked as being re-released by Henry Threadgill, so I think we can assume they are legit. BTW what label were 'Air Raid' & 'Air Song' released on?
  6. I've just seen that Downtown Music Gallery DMG has three of the early Air recordings available as 'self-released CD-Rs'. The three are: '80 degrees below '82' which came out on the Antilles label in 1982 'Air Raid' which I have on a 'Whynot' Lp from 1976 'Air Song' which I have on an 'India Navigation' LP from 1982 Now this is serious music, so if you don't have vinyl copies already, get an order in quickly!
  7. Head Man

    Frank Lowe

'The Flam' & 'Fresh' are very good early recordings, as is the recently re-released CD on the Marge Label called 'Tricks of the Trade'. 'Exotic heartbreak' & 'Decision in paradise' on Soul Note are both excellent but the bestest Frank Lowe in my opinion is 'Live from Soundscape' on DIW. A terrific live set from 1993 with Frank playing in a quintet with 'Butch' Morris - Cornet; Amina Claudine Myers - piano; Wilbur Morris - bass & Tim Pleasant - drums.
  8. Looking forward to the Johnny Griffin (bonus tracks!) and Duke Pearson. My 'Johnny Griffin' CD has 9 tracks. I wonder what's missing from the RVG?
  9. I'd really like to see those two Woody Shaw's. How about adding another twofer for the Chico Freeman recordings on Elektra/Musician.
  10. Aha, you clever son of a gun. I'm listening to this now. Nice, thanks! Can't seem to get Priester's Love Love and one of the Miles shows. Must be gone. Well, its defeated me! How do you find it on darkfunk, I can only seem to access 5 titles?
  11. My feelings exactly! I bought this when it came out in the late 60s plus the earlier LP 'For Adolphe Sax'. I happened to be visiting the 'Mole Jazz' Record Shop in London, Kings Cross when Peter Brotzmann arrived with boxload of LPs for sale and in a moment of weakness I bought both of them! Whilst it did cause a great stir when I played it later at home at maximum volume, I hardly ever managed to listen to it for more than a few minutes before giving up. Whilst I can appreciate the energy that must have gone into making it, I am afraid that this doesn't help make it a good 'listening experience'. However I kept both LPs for many years and then sold them back to 'Mole Jazz' about ten years ago.
  12. Did they say when this would be done? I'm really pleased that you warned about the current poor bit rate, I was going to download it today.
  13. No mention of the Woody Shaw & Chico Freeman recordings. Does anyone have any information on why these have never seen the light of day on CD?
  14. Does anyone know why so few of these records have ever been re-issued on CD? I'm thinking particularly of two Woody Shaw albums - 'Master of the Art' & 'Night Music' plus one by Chico Freeman - 'Tradition in Transition' which I have on vinyl and would like to replace. The two Woody Shaw's were produced by Michael Cuscuna and I know he was very fond of Woody so I presume there must be a good reason why these have never seen the light of day. I seem to recall that a couple of Bill Evans' - 'Edition One & Two' were re-released a few years ago on Elektra so I presume someone must still have some master tapes.
  15. FWIW the recording is available on emusic. I've been listening to it now for several months & like it very much. However I don't have anything else by him, so I'm afraid I can't compare it to his other recordings.
  16. Deliberately obtuse response . Did you miss it ? : " If the Hefner story is not apocryphal , how is it that EMI was able in 1990 to reissue Playboys on CD with the original cover ? " You aren't thinking hard enough before your bilious ejaculations . Instead of posting your apology in a PM , how about this time posting one in public ? For folks "in the dark" about this exchange, Chas made a post a while back with 2 links to illegal music downloads (undoubtedly innocent on his part) and I reacted strongly. He PMed me, claiming to know nothing about the links, and I apologized for my zeal. Now, obviously with the "sting" of my previous post in mind, I feel he has over reacted to my post. To the issue at hand - the Playboys lp - I believe it was a "made up" controversy to pump sales of the record AND to provide an alternative package for stores with more conservative tastes. As evidence of this I offer the (then current) business association between PJ and Playboy. Children, calm down!!!!!!!!
  17. I've been trying for some time to obtain copies of two of Joe's Milestone recordings: 'Power to the People' & 'Black Narcissus'. The first recording is listed as available on Amazon but so far they have had no success in obtaining it for me; I don't believe the other recording has ever been released as a single CD. I know both of them are available on the boxset - 'The Milestone Years', but I have everything else of Joe's from this period & I can't justify buying the set for just these two recordings. Can anyone help?
  18. I've just been playimg 'The Centaur and the Phoenix' again this afternoon. What a terrific session by his nonet of: Clark Terry & Richard Williams (trumpets), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Josea Taylor (basoon), Tate Houston (baritone), Joe Zawinel (piano), Ben Tucker (bass) & lex Humphries (drums). The arrangements are top notch & the playing likewise. Does anyone know if this is Yusef's only 'biggish' band recording?
  19. This one came out last year with Zoot Sims playing with the Joe Castro Trio; recorded at Falcon's Lair on April 1, 1956 ... and very good it is too!
  20. Like Kevin I have used them without any problems and also like Kevin I now use Hiroshi. He's usually cheaper overall and his servive is second to none. My latest order was posted on a Friday and arrived on my doorstep the following Tuesday - beat that!
  21. It's funny but I've been playing rather a lot of his music recently, including most of his OJC titles. He is a very underated musician mainly, I think, because he plays so many different instruments. I prefer his tenor playing myself. I too wish that the rest of the Savoy titles would get released although I'm very happy with what I already have on 'The last Savoy Sessions'. I'm also very fond of 'Before dawn' on Verve which was released as a limited issue some years ago is now quite difficult to find. However I understand that it is due to be re-released in Japan sometime in October. Finally, having recently read the 'House that Trane built' I managed to locate copies of the two 'Live at Pep's' albums which seem to be the Impulse recordings that most reviewers prefer. If I enjoy those then I will probably go for the other Impulse recordings that are available.
  22. A few days ago I suddenly noticed that my emusic connection had changed from a US based site to one with with 'UK' in the title. I then received an e-mail telling me about the launch of the UK site and saying that my subscription would continue as before so there was no need to worry. However today I decided to buy a booster pack and suddenly the price of them has changed from $ to £! So now a 50 track booster pack has risen from $14.99 or about £8.25, to £13.99, an increase of about 70%! What a con! So in future I'll be confining my downloads to my monthly contract and keeping a very close eye on what I get charged each month!
