  1. There is a free audio capture program called "Messer". It works great and gives one the option of recording in MP3 or WAV. If you're a Windows user, it's worth checking out. http://www.dago.pmp.com.pl/messer/

    Don Ellis

I recently picked up an original pressing of this LP on eBay for $7.50. What a treat. I dig Don's playing and the added bonus of Jaki on both Piano and Alto Sax.
  3. By the looks of her avatar and last name, my guess would be Pianist Walter Bishop Jr., no?
  4. I saw him in Seattle (Jazz Alley) back in the mid 90's, am grateful for that. Thank goodness we have all these wonderful records he left for us. I hope a biography comes out about his facinating life (I love his stories about Bird and Prez). R.I.P.
  5. I'm looking to build a shelving unit for my LP collection and am wondering if anyone knows where I might be able to find some plans. I've ran a couple of searches on Google but found nothing, I assume that somewhere out in cyberspace someone has posted a design. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Stereolab

My apologies. How about a discussion about their new CD? I really dig it. It takes a few listens to resonate, but I've bonded with the music and find it quite enjoyable. It's amazing how this band has stayed together given the fact that a long-time member was killed and the two principle song writers divorced.
  7. What's so great about Sharon Stone?

I've been a fan since their first recording (Peng!) and they still continue to amaze me. I like many of their collaborations over the years, especially the "One Note Samba" date with Herbie Mann. I just saw them the other week and their performance was fantastic. I also like how they've incorporated more brass into their repertoire. They now have a classically trained French Horn/Clarinetist to play along side the Trombone. Anyone else here a fan?
  9. What about Anthony Anderson as Cannonball...?
  10. Thanks for the suggestion Brownie. I'll check it out.
  11. Brownie, it sounds like you enjoyed Henry's performance but perhaps not Patti's, no? BTW- Apart from the Andrew Hill show in April, is there any other recommended performances to see? I'll be in the Isle de France from April 5-24 visiting in-laws. Is there some sort of web site where one can go to get a listing of Jazz happenings in and around Paris or Normandy?
  12. It seems to me that this dumb ass should have protected himself, especially given the fact that he dated the woman for only 3-months. This Dubay guy is a naive, ignorant, uncaring fool. What's not fair in this whole thing is the fact that this innocent little girl has to suffer for the actions of her biological father. Not to mention the fact that one day she will find out that her Dad went to court so that he legally has no right to acknowledge her existence. I hope the court tosses this case out.
  13. Yes, he is a very nice guy indeed. I also chatted with him a bit over email. I too had never seen any of his photos before, but he tells me that some of his images were used in the Eric Dolphy film "Last Date". He also told me that he is on the planning committee for the Bergamo Jazz Festival. Nice! What year are those from?
  14. Sometime ago, an Italian photographer, by the name of Riccardo Schwamenthal was listing some great original photos on eBay. I don't think he is still active but none the less, I snapped up about 12 of his images before he decided to close shop. I own some great shots of Louie, Sonny Rollins, Jaki Byard, Ella, Count, Bud, Duke...to name a few. The photos are mostly from the 60's and were taken in Italy and France. The photo below was taken by Riccardo and is similar to the one I purchased from him (different angle though). I got this one from the web site of Henry Grimes. Anyone else buy photos from this guy?
  15. I'm interested to see the outcome of this: http://cgi.ebay.com/charles-mingus-AT-MONT...1QQcmdZViewItem Anyone else own a Mingus Records box?
  16. I ordered my copy from Superbookdeals.com. I paid just under $107 shipped, which seems to be the best price I've seen so far. The book took about 9 days to arrive. Here is the link: http://www.superbookdeals.com/cgi-bin/more...=2413296&bisac= BTW- I'm not affiliated with SBD.com. This was the first time I've ordered from them. They also list on Amazon Marketplace, but their prices are a bit higher. I hope this helps someone.
  17. What fascinated me most about the book was how private Klook was about his childhood, and what exactly kept him from returning to Pittsburg (I think he came back once or twice after he left). He also contradicted himself quite a bit, which Hennessey points out at various points in the book. Another fascinating thing was that he was a Muslim, despite the fact that he never went to the mosque, and married a Jewish woman. I wonder what his son Laurent (w/ his Dutch wife) is doing today? I'm also interested in knowing the status of the neighborhood and the house they lived in.

    Sam Most

Good question. Here's the aforementioned CD with Bob Dorough: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001YNKH...5Fencoding=UTF8 A few of the Bethlehem recordings (“Musically Yours” & “Sam Most Plays Bird Bud Miles and Monk”) are available on Amazon and CD Universe. As for the Xanadu stuff, forget about it. From what I've been told, Don Schlitten currently has no plans to reissue them. Who knows what the future may hold... Here is a CD Sam did with Richard Simon: http://www.ufo-bass.com/cd.htm

It also fetches quite a few dollars on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Funk-45-Sam-Most-Jungl...1QQcmdZViewItem

On his web site (which I manage), I've assembled his complete discography as a leader (for those interested). It's a pity; he has a number of tracks (at least 2-3 albums worth) that he recorded with Carl Saunders, playing a variety of instruments, which will probably never see the light of day. In the last year or so, he also did some things with Daniel May, who knows what will happen to that. I spoke with him yesterday and he told me that Bob Dorough called him a few weeks back asking for permission to use his name on a reissue of recordings they did many years ago. http://www.sammost.com

That's an interesting observation Larry. What he actually does is more like humming (he has a tune called "The Humming Blues" on his Xanadu release titled "Flute Flight"). This technique came about at an early age as a result of, as Sam says, "trying not to make too much noise" while practicing in his parents house. Sam can scat and sing pretty well too. Not to mention his command of the clarinet, tenor, alto and baritone saxophones.

He made some great recordings for Bethlehem in the 50's and Xanadu in the 70's. Charles Mingus called him "The World's Greatest Jazz Flutist". He has always had the respect of his peers, but is not well known. I was just curious what people think of him and his playing. He's still around today and plays at various clubs around Los Angeles. Recently he played on Terry Gibb's "52ND & BROADWAY: SONGS OF THE BEBOP ERA".
  23. I thought he looked familiar, he's a member of the Max Weinberg 7 (LN/W Conan O'Brien).
  24. Saw this on a bumper sticker many years ago, "Conserve Energy, Fart in a Jar”.
