  1. The Rockets beat the Warriors in the regular-season series as well, for all the good it did them in the playoffs. Much as I'd like to see someone else win it all, it seems that the Warriors are this decade's version of Jordan's Bulls in the 1990s.
  2. Wow, I hadn't looked at his site in a long time. I have the original edition of the Grog Log, but will have to check out the newer stuff. I'm fortunate to live about five minutes away from a top-notch tiki bar, so they tend to get my business when I'm in the mood for a quality rum-based drink. If I'm making cocktails at home, usually gin or vodka is involved.
  3. Unfortunately, it does not include either of the two books that came with the CD box.
  4. Since it's hosted by Blogspot it's probably not in any danger of disappearing any time soon, but in the event that it does, the Internet Archive appears to have a reasonably complete backup. Spot-checking links to the earliest posts from the blog shows they are there, which is usually a pretty good indicator of completeness. http://web.archive.org/web/20190410133716/http://stomp-off.blogspot.com/
  5. I got it from Michael Cuscuna, who is eBay seller bluenotesound, so I'm assuming Mosaic doesn't have any or he wouldn't be selling the incomplete sets. He still has two copies available on eBay, and I noticed that the price had dropped from the $79.95 he was selling them for about a month ago to $49.95 now, which is what got me off the fence. The usual asking prices for this set weren't going to happen for me, so I figured I'd roll the dice on eventually being able to replace the missing discs and enjoy the rest of the set in the meantime.
  6. Just picked up a copy of the Mosaic Classic Earl Hines Sessions set that's missing discs 1 and 2. Anyone happen to have orphan copies of these two discs that you'd be interested in unloading?
  7. I've seen IKWIG many times, but was still immediately transfixed when I happened to stumble upon it a week or two ago just when it was starting on TCM. Despite it being well past midnight, I wound up glued to my seat watching it until some time past the halfway point, when the need to get more than five hours of sleep before the workday came calling in the morning finally outweighed the need to see the film through to the end. I still remember the first time my wife saw it more then twenty years ago during a Powell & Pressburger retrospective - she was completely captivated by it, and maintained that it was the most romantic film she'd ever seen. I have a special fondness for The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, but given how many great films Powell & Pressburger made, it can be a difficult task to argue that one is more essential than another.
  8. I don't have a copy, but for pre-1950 Cole recordings like this, I'd check the Straighten Up and Fly Right discography. You might be able to borrow a copy via interlibrary loan. Straighten Up and Fly Right: A Chronology and Discography of Nat King Cole (Discographies: Association for Recorded Sound Collections Discographic Reference)
  9. I assume you have the premium version of MalwareBytes that provides real-time monitoring. I don't have much experience with that version, but if you're going to be accessing blog links to any of the various cloud storage services like Mediafire, you should be running two browser add-ins: uBlock Origin and an industrial-strength pop-up blocker like Poper Blocker. That combination will kill almost all of the more egregious attempts to inject ads that border on malware, unwanted redirects, and pop-ups that ignore the built-in pop-up blocking function in most browsers. You can still allow "good" pop-ups on a case-by-case basis.
  10. At the end of last season it was all but a foregone conclusion that Keuchel had played his last game as an Astro, but the longer he has continued to remain on the free-agent market, the more speculation there seems to be about him eventually getting re-signed. For quite some time it seemed like Gonzalez had a far better shot at returning than Keuchel, but that possibility was significantly diminished as soon as the Astros signed Aledmys Diaz.
  11. There's also a companion disc of sorts to the Cinema box set that focuses on the French New Wave: Le Cinéma De Michel Legrand Nouvelle Vague I had not seen the Anthology previously (I have the Legrand/Demy and Cinema sets) - it looks like a great set, but those asking prices are a non-starter.
  12. Rejection From Hall Of Fame Sends Roger Clemens Spiraling Into Performance-Enhancing-Drug Binge
  13. There's still at least one active cartoonist whose skills are comparable to the old-school guys, Gasoline Alley's Jim Scancarelli. But more often than not, GA has been recycling older strips of late (with the exception of the recent arc commemorating the strip's 100th anniversary), and there's been plenty of speculation as to how long Scancarelli will continue drawing it before opting for retirement.
  14. I have a very similar thought every time I hear some SiliValley techbro utter the word "disruptive".
  15. "Boston Charlie" appeared many times in Pogo over the years around Christmastime - here's a Sunday strip from 1971:
  16. Jerry Seinfeld pays tribute to Bob Einstein - Twitter video
  17. New daily photoblog that just kicked off on January 1, tracking events in jazz that took place during 1959: The 1959 Project
  18. Yeah, likewise, I sit in front of a computer often enough that I don't watch movies on one unless there are absolutely no other options (which is a very infrequent scenario). But you do know that there is an official YouTube channel for Roku, right? My recollection is that they originally had one, then had to pull it from the Channel Store after some sort of dispute with Google, then there wasn't one for a long time before they finally resolved everything and it was once again made available: https://channelstore.roku.com/details/837/youtube Even better, if you have the YouTube phone app, you can search for videos using your phone, select one, and play it directly via the Roku channel. Beats the hell out of trying to search for a video using the Roku remote and on-screen display.
  19. Why non-YouTube? The first hit on a YouTube search is an HD version (720 instead of 1080, but close enough to HD) apparently ripped from Netflix. I don't have a Netflix account, but if you go to the official Netflix site for the film, A Final Cut for Orson appears to be streamable from there: https://www.netflix.com/title/80085566
  20. The shorter doc is called "A Final Cut for Orson: 40 Years in the Making" and is just under 39 minutes long. I think Janus Films has the domestic rights to all of the Ray films that Criterion has released on Blu-ray/DVD (The Apu Trilogy, THE MUSIC ROOM, CHARULATA, THE BIG CITY, and several others). I don't think they circulate prints for these, but they do offer bookings for DCPs for several of them. They can be contacted at booking@janusfilms.com. I could swear I read something not too long ago about an impending Blu-ray release of JAZZ ON A SUMMER'S DAY, but I can't seem to find any mention of if anywhere now. If true, that would obviously provide a path forward for some inquiries as to who the rightsholder is. Unfortunately, determining the copyright status of motion pictures is frequently an undertaking that's complicated enough to require retaining the services of professionals who perform such research for hire. If I had a need for such services, the first person I'd contact would be Eli Savada at the Motion Picture Information Service. https://www.facebook.com/mpisonline/
