  1. Deeply sorry for your loss. Please accept my condolences.
  2. Not to beat a dead horse, since three other people have already made the same comment, but what's keeping you tied to IE? Granted, I hardly ever use it, as I've been using Firefox (and its predecessors Netscape and Mosaic) for a long time, and alternate between it and Chrome depending on the task at hand. I've yet to find the browser that works perfectly on all sites; inevitably, there's always one that fails to render or function properly in the browser I'm using at that moment, but switching to another browser almost always resolves the problem. It sounds like you've run into one of those compatibility issues rooted somewhere in the nexus of IE11, Win7, and this site.
  3. He is hitting .733 in this Series. That puts him in second place for all-time batting average in a single Series, behind only Billy Hatcher's .750 in the 1990 Series. Hatcher only had 15 plate appearances as opposed to Ortiz's 20 (and counting). Unreal.
  4. It usually takes a couple weeks for the Printer manufacturers to make new drivers compatible with an OS release. I was working at Apple when Snow Leopard launched and it was just around 10 days before HP and the other printer manufactures provided updated drivers. What software do you use to access the complete New Yorker? It is / was a Power PC program - same as the Nikon - no longer recognized. Bondi Digital, the company whose Bondi Reader software runs the New Yorker DVD set as well as the similar Rolling Stone and Playboy sets, appears to have shifted their development resources to a web-based HTML5 reader. This is great for the publishers, who can sell subscriptions to their archives online, but it pretty much leaves those who purchased the DVD sets out in the cold as the Reader software becomes increasingly incompatible with newer operating systems. I don't have a Mac, but when I got a PC running Windows 7 my New Yorker set wouldn't run on it either. I got it to work after downloading a patch for 64-bit Vista from the CoverToCover website (http://www.covertocover.com/support/support_issues.html), but the fact that they don't list any Windows OSes past Vista in their system requirements is a strong indication that they're no longer actively developing the Reader software.
  5. PM on: Illinois Jacquet - The Kid and the Brute (reissued 1998)- $12 Sonny Criss - The Complete Imperial Sessions (Blue Note 24564 reissued 2000 - 2CDs) - $10 Gil Mele - The Complete Blue Note Fifties Sessions (Blue Note 95718 reissued 1998 - 2CDs) - $10 (promo copy markings on discs and some slight damage to booklet/liner notes) Stanley Turrentine with the Three Sounds - Blue Hour (Blue Note 24586 reissued 2000 - 2CDs) - $10
  6. One would assume they already have the data necessary to do that. Not sure what tools they used to build the map, but if they're open-source it would be nice if the source was released to let those who are interested build further upon this foundation.
  7. Interesting interactive map depicting the birthplaces of almost everyone who played in a Blue Note session up to 1967 (click and drag the sliders at either end of the timeline to adjust the time period), from the online history journal The Appendix: http://theappendix.net/issues/2013/7/the-appendix-appendixed
  8. What happens now? Some history and further speculation here, although from the general tone I'd say the author has an ax to grind: http://observer.com/2013/08/the-excruciating-demise-of-wbai/
  9. 75% of staff, including entire news department and most of the on-air talent, laid off effective Monday: http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2013/08/wbai_pacifica_r.php
  10. http://caloesnewsroom.wordpress.com/2013/06/24/the-almost-impossible-images-that-captured-post-earthquake-san-francisco-in-1906/ Click the photo for a huge (7000 x 2748) version of it. Truly amazing.
  11. They're definitely the Lastros, but that's (marginally) better than being the Half-Astros!
  12. Amazon has it for the same price: http://www.amazon.com/Office-Complete-Collection-Second-Special/dp/B0002W4P98/ and I've also seen copies lately, again at the same price, at a couple of Half Price Books stores.
  13. This thread reminded me that I have a Plugged Nickel set that I've been meaning to offer for sale. I wound up with a second copy of this set a while back, and that's one more than I need. I bought it used in the late 1990s, and the discs are in very nice shape, most appearing nearly new with only very faint signs of use, if any. Jewel cases are in good shape, except the inner tray hinge of the one containing two discs has come loose, so you have to be careful with that one when removing the disc on the bottom side of the tray. Booklet has a faint bend across it, noticeable but it's not as pronounced as a fold. Box is OK, structurally sound with no seam splits but it does have some shelf wear on the bottom and a moderate crease across the upper part of one side (see attached pic). $125 including shipping to US addresses. I will ship internationally but will need to know the destination before I can provide a total. PM and post here if interested.
  14. Spotted in the always-interesting Twitter feed of Longreads (http://longreads.com/): Basotho Dance Party - http://roadsandkingdoms.com/2013/famo/
  15. I've seen people do that at my office as well on occasion. I don't do it myself, but on the other hand I can't disparage it too much after having witnessed someone exit the restroom after taking a crap without washing their hands.

  17. Windows 8.1, incorporating a significant number of changes to Windows 8, is scheduled for release before year-end: http://www.zdnet.com/windows-8-1-unveiled-will-it-change-your-mind-about-windows-8-7000016112/ Anyone who's used Windows for any length of time should be familiar with the old saying about avoiding major new Windows releases until the first service pack comes out, but I sympathize with anyone buying a new PC now as you're pretty much stuck with Win8 in most cases. I have no desire to "upgrade" from Win7, and will likely not do so for a long time - I was still using Win2000 Server until a little over two years ago.
  18. Finally got on board with a pledge earlier today. Glad to see the pace has really picked up in the past day or so. Almost there...
  19. This one is really good, it's a 2-disc compilation containing tracks from all of the major labels he recorded for: http://www.amazon.com/The-Essential-George-Jones-Country/dp/B0000028LN There's also a repackaged version (the earlier one was in a longbox, the repackaged one is in a regular double jewel case): http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Spirit-Country-Jewel-Case/dp/B000009RBG Unfortunately, both versions appear to have gotten pretty expensive. Not sure if this has been the case for a while or if it's a temporary situation brought on by his death.
  20. Another vote for Samsung monitors. I replaced an old 19" CRT a couple of years ago with a 23" Samsung LCD. DVDs and Blu-rays look great on it, as do YouTube 720p/1080p videos at fullscreen, and for standard use it's likewise flawless. 23-24" is the sweet spot between cost and size - you should be able to get a nice one for less than $150.
  21. Enabling a Blu-ray player to be multiregion generally requires a hardware modification - they're not like DVD players where you can just enter a code on the remote to switch regions. There are indeed a bunch to be found If you search Amazon for "region free Blu-ray". Another well-regarded vendor that has a bigger selection is http://www.world-import.com/region_free_blu_ray_DVD_players.htm . There are some pretty cheap region-free Blu options out there, but the name brands will cost more. Oppo is favored by a lot of people - they're expensive but will play almost anything you throw at them and have outstanding picture and audio quality.
