    Tony Fruscella

Niko - I just found this thread myself, so it's never too late to resurrect it. Yes, Jerry (Hurwitz) Lloyd definitely belongs with the Fruscella/Joseph/Sunkel/Ferrara group of trumpeters, both sound-wise and in regard to their musical associations. Did you ever notice that almost every one of these guys has played with either Stan Getz or Gerry Mulligan, or both? And because of his sound, even though he wasn't one of their circle, we have to include Chet Baker, too, and he was associated with both Getz and Mulligan. Interesting. Sorry I can't answer either of your questions, but I have one of my own: One of my favorite Fruscella tracks is Tony's Blues, from the Coral LP, East Coast Jazz Scene and now on the Jazz Factory box set. Since that came from a live concert, what happened to the other tracks? I can't believe he came on to play only one number. I know Mike Fitzgerald's discography lists only that track, but there has to be more. Anybody know? And welcome to another Fruscella lover.
  3. On the "Jazz-westcoast" listserve, several people have posted that he passed away yesterday, Feb. 7th. No details yet. Oops - while I was posting this, someone else posted with more details, so feel free to delete this, administrator.
  4. Thanks for posting this. I'll be looking for this film on DVD. I got to hear Jackie live in about 1964 when he was touring with Anne Marie Moss. It was a strange gig, in a rather upscale, allegedly mob-connected nightclub in Worcester, Mass. He was excellent - I was one of about 5 people in the entire club.
  5. According to Jazzmatazz, this is coming out Nov. 29th: Could this be the album this thread is about? Looks like it.
  6. It was meant as a joke. See, there's this thing called irony, where you say the opposite of what you mean in order to......never mind. There's no such language as "Andorran." In Andorra, they speak Catalan.
  7. Thanks for the info. Maybe "complete" translated into Spanish doesn't mean the same thing.
  8. I believe all their stuff is included in this: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LHJ10179 COMPLETE FIFTIES STUDIO RECORDINGS J. J. JOHNSON 2 CD SET. Includes all 4 studio albums that comprise the complete 1950´s recorded legacy of the J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding Quintet. Also contains an alternate version of Porter´s standard. Over 135 minutes of music! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That LHJ is Lone Hill Jazz. Yes, I know the Thought Police on this board say we shouldn't buy from those European companies, so let's wait until Columbia/Sony reissues it , because we know that they'll send all the profits to the Johnson and Winding estates

    Mingus News

The first release was "I Am Three" by the Mingus Big Band/Mingus Orchestra/Mingus Dynasty.
  10. Michael Cuscuna told me, some months back, that the complete Mulligan Sextet recordings will be coming out on Mosaic --- sometime. Hope I'm still around.
  11. I notice that CD Universe has it for $16.98. ← Doh!! Now I find out
  12. The CD is the original recording, remastered and sounding fine. The DVD has more than 4 hours of material, including a master class, interviews with musicians from The Age of Steam, including Brookmeyer and Tom Scott, an excellent documentary, and a DVD Audio, surround-sound mix of The Age of Steam. An excellent package, well worth the money. And don't pay the $29.99 Amazon is asking - you can get it direct from Artists House for $24.98, including shipping.
  13. If you don't have any WD40 or other substance handy, try this: After you peel the tape off (and it never comes off in one piece), don't throw it away. Take the tape and press it, sticky side down, against the residue. The residue starts to be removed. Do it a few times until the residue is gone. Always works for me.
  14. Just think - if he'd done everything sloppily and unprofessionally, he'd be acclaimed now as one of the great free jazz players of the century. Oh, the foolish career choices people make. He'll obviously never get a Mosaic box. Oh, wait a minute.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What a truly bizarre, out-of-left-field comment. Was there a point to it? Actually, don't bother.
  15. And the 2006 NEA Jazz Masters are...
  16. Thanks! An unjustly neglected musician. "Attention must be paid....."
  17. Thanks! I couldn't open it either until I went to your link.
  18. Then maybe you can answer a question for me. I was listening to the OJC CD of "You Get More Bounce With Curtis Counce" on headphones the other day, and noticed on track 3 ("Too Close for Comfort") that the left channel disappears at 1:28-1:51. Do I have a defective CD, or do you hear it also? ← Right you are, it does disappear, only it's more like 1:12 - 2:23. Or to be more precise, it disappears every time the horns aren't playing. The horn mics are either turned off or potted down completely, leaving a very disconcerting mono/right channel only mix. Not like Les Koenig or Roy Dunann to do that. Hmmmm...
  19. I know my eyesight is getting worse, but I've looked everywhere on the internet and don't see this listed anywhere (including Jazzmatazz, Concord or Fantasy). Where did you hear about it? ← JPF, see this thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...topic=21336&hl= ← Thanks!!
  20. I just re-listened to that track. At first I thought it was just one of the band members singing in a falsetto voice, but when the singing comes back at the end, after the tenor solo, you can hear it's definitely a woman. The voice seems to be in a higher range than I've heard Honi Gordon sing, but I suppose it could be. Ask Sue Mingus!

  22. How about the complete Curtis Counce group, in chronological order this time?
  23. I've owned it on LP for years. a nice, loose session, Gerry blowing with a great rhythm section. I've always been partial to "What Is There To Say", his other Columbia album. Have also always liked the Emarcy sextet sessions, released over several LP's, w/ Jon Eardley, Zoot Sims. ← Michael Cuscuna told me a few months back that Mosaic plans to do the complete Mulligan Sextet sessions sometime in the future, but not until after the next Mulligan set they're doing, later this year.
  24. Doug Ramsey in Rifftides has this to say about him:

    MONK PLAYS CHOPIN

I emailed Thelonious Records (whose website it's on) about this, and the representative, Peter Grain, while admitting there is some controversy about the clip, says...
