Don't know if this qualifies as a tenor battle per say, and it's certainly not from the classic era, but I enjoy Joe Lovano's Tenor Legacy with Joshua Redman from '93.

Ahh, but your text is twice as crisp as Lon's, Claude

It is??? Sheesh, I'd better start getting the kid's Halloween costumes together. Seems like it got here quick this year...

I'm guessing you've steered clear of these guys: -
Ol' "Skinny Eyes" Parker here yessir. I posted this a long time ago on the NBB: ****************** HOW TO SING THE BLUES by Lame Mango Washington 1. Most Blues begin, "Woke up this morning." 2. "I got a good woman" is a bad way to begin the Blues, 'less you stick something nasty in the next line, like "I got a good woman, with the meanest face in town." 3. The Blues is simple. After you get the first line right, repeat it. Then find something that rhymes .... sort of: "Got a good woman - with the meanest face in town. Got teeth like Margaret Thatcher - and she weigh 500 pound." 4. The Blues are not about choice. You stuck in a ditch, you stuck in a ditch; ain't no way out. 5. Blues cars: Chevys and Cadillacs and broken-down trucks. Blues don't travel in Volvos, BMWs, or Sport Utility Vehicles. Most Blues transportation is a Greyhound bus or a southbound train. Jet aircraft and state-sponsored motor pools ain't even in the running. Walkin' plays a major part in the blues lifestyle. So does fixin' to die. 6. Teenagers can't sing the Blues. They ain't fixin' to die yet. Adults sing the Blues. In Blues, "adulthood" means being old enough to get the electric chair if you shoot a man in Memphis. 7. Blues can take place in New York City but not in Hawaii or any place in Canada. Hard times in St. Paul or Tucson is just depression. Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City still the best places to have the Blues. You cannot have the blues in any place that don't get rain. 8. A man with male pattern baldness ain't the blues. A woman with male pattern baldness is. Breaking your leg cuz you skiing is not the blues. Breaking your leg cuz an alligator be chomping on it is. 9. You can't have no Blues in an office or a shopping mall. The lighting is wrong. Go outside to the parking lot or sit by the dumpster. 10. Good places for the Blues: a. highway b. jailhouse c. empty bed d. bottom of a whiskey glass Bad places: a. Ashrams b. gallery openings c. Ivy League institutions d. golf courses 11. No one will believe it's the Blues if you wear a suit, 'less you happen to be an old ethnic person, and you slept in it. 12. Do you have the right to sing the Blues? Yes, if: a. you're older than dirt b. you're blind c. you shot a man in Memphis d. you can't be satisfied No, if: a. you have all your teeth b. you were once blind but now can see c. the man in Memphis lived d. you have a retirement plan or trust fund 13. Blues is not a matter of color. It's a matter of bad luck. Tiger Woods cannot sing the blues. Gary Coleman could. Ugly white people also got a leg up on the blues. 14. If you ask for water and Baby give you gasoline, it's the Blues. Other acceptable Blues beverages are: a. wine b. whiskey or bourbon c. muddy water d. black coffee The following are NOT Blues beverages: a. mixed drinks b. kosher wine c. Snapple d. sparkling water 15. If it occurs in a cheap motel or a shotgun shack, it's a Blues death. Stabbed in the back by a jealous lover is another Blues way to die. So is the electric chair, substance abuse, and dying lonely on a broken down cot. You can't have a Blues death if you die during a tennis match or getting liposuction. 16. Some Blues names for women: a. Sadie b. Big Mama c. Bessie d. Fat River Dumpling 17. Some Blues names for men: a. Joe b. Willie c. Little Willie d. Big Willie 18. Persons with names like Brad, Reno, Biff, Sierra, Sequoia, Buffy, Auburn, and Rainbow can't sing the Blues no matter how many men they shoot in Memphis. 19. Make your own Blues name (starter kit): a. name of physical infirmity (Blind, Cripple,Lame, etc.) b. first name (see above) plus name of fruit (Lemon, Lime,Kiwi, etc.) c. last name of President (Jefferson, Johnson, Fillmore, etc.) For example, Blind Lime Jefferson, or Cripple Kiwi Fillmore, etc. (Well, maybe not "Kiwi.") 20. I don't care how tragic your life: you own a computer, you cannot sing the blues. You best destroy it. Fire, a spilled bottle of Mad Dog, or get out a shotgun. Maybe your big woman just done sat on it. I don't care.

Not really a big deal in the bigger scheme of things I suppose, but I went into one of my used stores about two weeks ago, and was flipping through the "new arrivals" section of jazz lps, probably numbering 150-200 titles. Came across John Scofield's first leader date, "East Meets West". Since my turntable's not currently with me, I skipped on it (and buried it back in the middle of the section) and picked up a couple of cds instead. Went back two days later to get it, and it was gone. ALL of the other new arrivals were still there...

I've picked up four of the six discs at one of my local used stores. I'd say run, don't walk, and pick up the box, if you like Jarrett's standards trio! I'm sorta kicking myself, because I don't think I'm going to find the remaining two discs separately. I'll probably end up purchasing the box proper, and then re-selling the individual discs. I think one or two of the discs are available for purchase individually (but not all of them), if you want a "sampler" before purchasing the box.

Thanks Chuck. Actually, I was wondering whether it was MY-kull or mih-KILE

Missing Teen Elizabeth Smart Found Alive!!!
Aggie87 replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Alexander - Not everyone hears it at the same time as you. And if people are just hearing about it through word of mouth, perhaps they want to go to the media to find out more. I still haven't seen this info on any of the news channels available to me (CNN International, Fox News, and some British channels), so if I turn on the tv and happen to see a report on the Smart case, I'll watch it. This particular case being positive and heartwarming, gets people excited. They want to know more about her and the kidnapping, so I don't think it's as simple (or unpassionate) as "She's Alive. She seems to be physically well" and let's all get over it and move on to the next subject. -
Anyone care to take a stab at Michael Cuscuna's name then?

"Hmm" I thought, while attempting to break into the BN vaults and retrieve the "Aric Effron Collective Sci-Fi Tome". That guy who used to like The Three Sounds, what was his handle? Gene Harris Fanatic or something or 'nother. Yeah, that's it. He was the one who really had gotten a chuckle out of this thread. Just then, as I had broken the code to get into that vault (turns out it was "1574", the issue number of Peckin' Time), a flash of light and a flume of smoke dazed me. There before me was an apparition, the ghost of Warne Marsh! Then he started to speak...

Not to derail this thread, but... Is this real?? It's almost more comical than anything else. Reminds me of the character (played by Damon Wayans?) from "In Living Color" who was so "verboticular in his speechulary".

couw - This is the listing I was referring to - Sonny Red - Two Altos. It's probable it's the same as what you're referring to, but there is virtually no information provided. Down at the bottom there is a reference to Blue Note, with the number "6069" listed. This is normally where issue numbers are provided, but I don't know enough about numberings to know whether this is legit or not. And thanks Dan - That OJC looks worthwhile too, and has the side benefit of feedin' my Grant Green jones... -Erik

I recently picked up Sonny's Out of the Blue TOCJ, and really enjoy it. Looking at AMG, I discovered his other BN release, Two Altos. However, the COMPLETE AMG review is: "With Art Pepper on alto sax." How is Two Altos? Who else plays on this, and is it available on CD? Any other Sonny Red recommendations? I've already got Byrd's Mustang and Slow Drag.

Anyone have this yet? Care to share your opinion, review, etc?

I really like it as well! It's nice to hear Evans in that quintet setting, especially with the caliber of talent he got together - Land, Burrell, Brown, and Philly Joe! I think I need to check out Ray Brown a bit further.

I'm repeating my postings from AAJ over here, in case anyone's interested. I saw this double-header on Friday night, and had a great time! Gary Burton & Makoto Ozone: Burton and Ozone were in good form, and seemed to enjoy playing with each other. They played a variety of numbers, including a tribute to each of Red Norvo, Milt Jackson, Cal Tjader, and Lionel Hampton. They also played a few cuts from their Virtuosi disc, including the Rachmaninoff and Ravel pieces. The encore was Ozone's "Bienvenidos al Mundo", which had Burton referring to the sheet music, as he wasn't that familiar with it yet. Highly recommended if anyone's on the fence about seeing them. I believe they're continuing with a show in Hamburg tomorrow night, and then some dates in the U.S. Christian McBride Band: McBride's quartet includes Ron Blake on sax/flute, Geoff Keezer on piano/keyboards, and Terreon Gully on drums. They opened with Technicolor Nightmare, and it was even more impressive than the studio version on Vertical Vision, IMO. Afterwards, Christian mentioned that it was inspired by "the rock band Yes" of all things. They also played Wizard of Montara, his tribute to Bobby Hutcherson, and Ballad of Little Girl Dancer. No Boogie Woogie Waltz, unfortunately. They also did covers of "Aja" and "Walking on the Moon" (I would've bet money on a Sting cover, McBrinde being in his band also), that were nice, but didn't do that much for me. Ron Blake & Terreon Gully played very well. Blake stuck to the tenor all night, even though he had a soprano and a flute on stage with him. Geoff Keezer was ok, but didn't really get too fired up. He also had some technical problems with his sound early on, but those got cleared up. Christian alternated between acoustic and fretless electric throughout the show, and really grooved. Highly recommended!

Hi Jim - Never asked you a question prior to this, but I've enjoyed reading your responses on the Blue Note board in the past. I just picked up David S. Ware's "Surrendered" this weekend, and lo-and-behold, there's your name inside the package (again - I've been noticing your name on more and more of my cds lately). Any interesting recollections from this session? What music do you actually enjoy listening to, when you're not working? I'm gonna take a stab and say it's not jazz at all (?).

...ok ok, I've now washed up on this shore too. I'll echo what I seem to be hearing from a few of the others. This is the best set-up board I've seen of all the choices (thx B3er!). I tried out Harlem for about two minutes, and haven't been back. Don't care for the setup at Jazz Corner. AAJ I like reasonably well enough. My concern for this board is that it won't ultimately pull in revolving new blood. I like you guys well enough (well most of you anyway!), don't get me wrong! But after the exodus from BN is complete, who else is going to tumble into this site? Where will our future softsongs come from? That's one thing AAJ has going for it, albeit to a lesser degree than the "old" BNBB did, since it's a commercial website, and would theoretically draw new posters from the other parts of the site. Anyway, I'm here and at AAJ. Just don't know which one to post to. And I don't want to repeat-post in both places. Sigh...
